| 1 Pero los israelitas cometieron un delito en lo del anatema. Akán, hijo de Karmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Zéraj, de la tribu de Judá, se quedó con algo del anatema, y la ira de Yahveh se encendió contra los israelitas. | 1 But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things; for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things; and the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel. |
| 2 Josué envió de Jericó a Ay, que está (junto a Bet Avén) al oriente de Betel, unos hombres, diciéndoles: «Subid a explorar el país». Los hombres subieron y exploraron Ay. | 2 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, "Go up and spy out the land." And the men went up and spied out Ai. |
| 3 Volvieron donde Josué y le dijeron: «Que no suba toda la gente; para atacar a Ay basta con que suban dos o 3.000 hombres. No molestes a toda la gente haciéndoles subir hasta allí, porque ellos son pocos». | 3 And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are but few." |
| 4 Subieron a Ay unos 3.000 hombres del pueblo, pero tuvieron que huir ante los hombres de Ay. | 4 So about three thousand went up there from the people; and they fled before the men of Ai, |
| 5 Los hombres de Ay les mataron como unos 36 hombres y los persiguieron más allá de la puerta hasta Sebarim, batiéndolos en la bajada. Entonces desfalleció el corazón del pueblo y se derritió como agua. | 5 and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six men of them, and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim, and slew them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. |
| 6 Josué desgarró sus vestidos, se postró rostro en tierra delante del arca de Yahveh hasta la tarde, junto con los ancianos de Israel, y todos esparcieron polvo sobre sus cabezas. | 6 Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads. |
| 7 Dijo Josué: «¡Ah, Señor Yahveh! ¿Por qué has hecho pasar el Jordán a este pueblo, para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos y destruirnos? ¡Ojalá nos hubiésemos empeñado en establecernos al otro lado del Jordán! | 7 And Joshua said, "Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! |
| 8 ¡Perdón, Señor! ¿Qué puedo decir ahora que Israel ha vuelto la espalda a sus enemigos? | 8 O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! |
| 9 Se enterarán los cananeos y todos los habitantes del país: se aliarán contra nosotros y borrarán nuestro nombre de la tierra. ¿Que harás tú entonces por tu gran nombre?» | 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth; and what wilt thou do for thy great name?" |
| 10 Yahveh respondió a Josué: «¡Arriba! ¡Vamos! ¿Por qué te estás así rostro en tierra? | 10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Arise, why have you thus fallen upon your face? |
| 11 Israel ha pecado, también ha violado la alianza que yo le había impuesto. Y hasta se han quedado con algo del anatema, y lo han robado, y lo han escondido y lo han puesto entre sus utensilios. | 11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, and lied, and put them among their own stuff. |
| 12 Los israelitas no podrán sostenerse ante sus enemigos; volverán la espalda ante sus enemigos, porque se han convertido en anatema. Yo no estaré ya con vosotros, si no hacéis desaparecer el anatema de en medio de vosotros. | 12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become a thing for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. |
| 13 Levántate, purifica al pueblo y diles: Purificaos para mañana, porque así dice Yahveh, el Dios de Israel: El anatema está dentro de ti, Israel; no podrás mantenerte delante de tus enemigos hasta que estirpéis el anatema de entre vosotros. | 13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the LORD, God of Israel, "There are devoted things in the midst of you, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies, until you take away the devoted things from among you." |
| 14 Os presentaréis, pues, mañana por la mañana, por tribus: la tribu que Yahveh designe por la suerte se presentará por clanes, el clan que Yahveh designe se presentará por familias, y la familia que Yahveh designe se presentará hombre por hombre. | 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes; and the tribe which the LORD takes shall come near by families; and the family which the LORD takes shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD takes shall come near man by man. |
| 15 El designado por la suerte en lo del anatema será entregado al fuego con todo lo que le pertenece, por haber violado la alianza de Yahveh y cometido una infamia en Israel». | 15 And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a shameful thing in Israel.'" |
| 16 Josué se levantó de mañana; mandó que se acercara Israel por tribus, y fue designada por la suerte la tribu de Judá. | 16 So Joshua rose early in the morning, and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken; |
| 17 Mandó que se acercaran los clanes de Judá, y fue designado por la suerte el clan de Zéraj. Mandó que se acercara el clan de Zéraj por familias, y fue designado por la suerte Zabdí. | 17 and he brought near the families of Judah, and the family of the Zerahites was taken; and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken; |
| 18 Mandó que se acercara la familia de Zabdí, hombre por hombre, y fue designado por la suerte Akán, hijo de Karmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Zéraj, de la tribu de Judá. | 18 and he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. |
| 19 Dijo entonces Josué a Akán: «Hijo mío, da gloria a Yahveh, Dios de Israel y tribútale alabanza; declárame lo que has hecho, no me lo ocultes». | 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and render praise to him; and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me." |
| 20 Akán respondió a Josué: «En verdad, yo soy el que ha pecado contra Yahveh, Dios de Israel; esto y esto es lo que he hecho: | 20 And Achan answered Joshua, "Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I did: |
| 21 Vi entre el botín un hermoso manto de Senaar, doscientos siclos de plata y un lingote de oro de cincuenta siclos de peso, me gustaron y me los guardé. Están escondidos en la tierra en medio de mi tienda, y la plata debajo». | 21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them, and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath." |
| 22 Josué envió emisarios, que fueron corriendo a la tienda, y en efecto el manto estaba escondido en la tienda y la plata debajo. | 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. |
| 23 Lo sacaron de la tienda y se lo llevaron a Josué y a todos los israelitas delante de Yahveh. | 23 And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the people of Israel; and they laid them down before the LORD. |
| 24 Entonces Josué tomó a Akán, hijo de Zéraj, con la plata, el manto y el lingote de oro, a sus hijos, sus hijas, su toro, su asno y su oveja, su tienda y todo lo suyo y los hizo subir al valle de Akor. Todo Israel le acompañaba. | 24 And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the mantle and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters, and his oxen and asses and sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. |
| 25 Josué dijo: «¿Por qué nos has traído la desgracia? Que Yahveh te haga desgraciado en este día». Y todo Israel lo apedreó (y los quemaron en la hoguera y los apedrearon). | 25 And Joshua said, "Why did you bring trouble on us? The LORD brings trouble on you today." And all Israel stoned him with stones; they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones. |
| 26 Levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que existe todavía hoy. Así Yahveh se calmó del furor de su cólera. Por eso se llama aquel lugar Valle de Akor hasta el día de hoy. | 26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day; then the LORD turned from his burning anger. Therefore to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor. |
