Jeremías 18

1 Palabra que fue dirigida a Jeremías de parte de Yahveh:	1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2 Levántate y baja a la alfarería, que allí mismo te haré oír mis palabras.	2 “Rise up and descend into the house of the potter, and there you will hear my words.”
3 Bajé a la alfarería, y he aquí que el alfarero estaba haciendo un trabajo al torno.	3 And I descended into the house of the potter, and behold, he was making a work on the wheel.
4 El cacharro que estaba haciendo se estropeó como barro en manos del alfarero, y éste volvió a empezar, trasformándolo en otro cacharro diferente, como mejor le pareció al alfarero.	4 And the vessel, which he was making with his hands out of clay, broke. And turning away, he made another vessel, for it had been pleasing in his eyes to make it.
5 Entonces me fue dirigida la palabra de Yahveh en estos términos:	5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
6 ¿No puedo hacer yo con vosotros, casa de Israel, lo mismo que este alfarero? - oráculo de Yahveh -. Mirad que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, casa de Israel.	6 “Am I not able to do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done, says the Lord? Behold, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.
7 De pronto hablo contra una nación o reino, de arrancar, derrocar y perder;	7 Suddenly, I will speak against a nation and against a kingdom, so that I may uproot, and destroy, and scatter it.
8 pero se vuelve atrás de su mal aquella gente contra la que hablé, y yo también desisto del mal que pensaba hacerle.	8 If that nation, against which I have spoken, will repent from their evil, I too will repent from the evil that I have decided I would do to them.
9 Y de pronto hablo, tocante a una nación o un reino, de edificar y plantar;	9 And soon, I will speak about a nation and about a kingdom, so that I may build and plant it.
10 pero hace lo que parece malo desoyendo mi voz, y entonces yo también desisto del bien que había decidido hacerle.	10 If it does evil in my sight, so as not to listen to my voice, I will repent of the good that I have said I would do to it.
11 Ahora, pues, di a la gente de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén: Así dice Yahveh: «Mirad que estoy ideando contra vosotros cosa mala y pensando algo contra vosotros. Ea, pues; volveos cada cual de su mal camino y mejorad vuestra conducta y acciones».	11 Now, therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am forming an evil against you, and I am considering a plan against you. Let each one of you return from his evil way, and direct your ways and your intentions well.”
12 Pero van a decir: «Es inútil; porque iremos en pos de nuestros pensamientos y cada uno de nosotros hará conforme a la terquedad de su mal corazón».	12 And they said: “We have lost hope. And so we will follow our own thoughts, and each of us will act according to the depravity of his own evil heart.”
13 Por tanto, así dice Yahveh: Vamos, preguntad entre las naciones: ¿Quién oyó tal cosa? ¡Bien fea cosa ha hecho la virgen de Israel!	13 For this reason, thus says the Lord: “Inquire among the Gentiles. Who has heard of such horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done to excess?
14 ¿Faltará acaso de la peña excelsa la nieve del Líbano? ¿o se agotarán las aguas crecidas, frescas, corrientes?	14 Do the snows of Lebanon fail to fall on the rocks of the field? Or are the cold waters, which burst forth and flow down, able to be rooted out?
15 Pues bien, mi pueblo me ha olvidado. A la Nada inciensan. Han tropezado en sus caminos, aquellos senderos de siempre, para irse por trochas, por camino no trillado.	15 Yet my people have forgotten me, offering useless libations, and stumbling in their ways, in the paths of the world, so that they walk by these on an unmarked route.
16 Es para trocar su tierra en desolación, en eterna rechifla: todo el que pasare se asombrará de ella y meneará la cabeza.	16 And so their land has been given over to desolation and to perpetual hissing. Each one who passes by will be astonished and will shake his head.
17 Como el viento solano los esparciré delante del enemigo. La espalda, que no la cara, les mostraré el día de su infortunio.	17 Like a burning wind, I will disperse them in the sight the enemy. I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their perdition.”
18 Entonces dijeron: «Venid y tramemos algo contra Jeremías, porque no va a faltarle la ley al sacerdote, el consejo al sabio, ni al profeta la palabra. Venid e hirámosle por su propia lengua: no estemos atentos a todas sus palabras».	18 And they said: “Come, and let us devise a plan against Jeremiah. For the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a sermon from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us pay no attention to any of his words.”
19 Estáte atento a mí, Yahveh, y oye lo que dicen mis contrincantes.	19 Attend to me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my adversaries.
20 ¿Es que se paga mal por bien? (Porque han cavado una hoya para mi persona.) Recuerda cuando yo me ponía en tu presencia para hablar en bien de ellos, para apartar tu cólera de ellos.	20 Should evil be rendered for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul! Remember that I have stood in your sight, so as to speak on their behalf for good, and to avert your indignation from them.
21 Por tanto, entrega a sus hijos al hambre y desángralos a filo de espada; queden sus mujeres sin hijos y viudas, sean sus varones asesinados, sus mancebos acuchillados en la guerra.	21 Because of this, give their sons over to famine, and bring them to the hand of the sword. Let their wives be widows without children. And let their husbands be slain by death. Let their youths be stabbed with the sword in battle.
22 Oigase griterío en sus casas, cuando traigas sobre ellos pillaje repentino. Porque han cavado una hoya para prenderme, y trampas han escondido para mis pies.	22 Let an outcry be heard from their houses. For you will lead the robber upon them suddenly. For they have dug a pit, so that they may seize me, and they have hidden snares for my feet.
23 Pero tú, Yahveh, conoces todo su plan de muerte contra mí. ¡No disimules su culpa, no borres de tu presencia su pecado! ¡Que caigan ante ti, al tiempo de tu ira, descarga en ellos!	23 But you, O Lord, know all their plans against me unto death. May you not forgive their iniquity, and do not allow their sin be taken away from your face. Let them be thrown down in your sight, in the time of your fury, so that you may destroy them.
