Eclesiastés/Qohelet 12

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Acuérdate de tu Creador en tus días mozos, mientras no vengan los días malos, y se echen encima años en que dirás: «No me agradan»;	1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;
2 mientras no se nublen el sol y la luz, la luna y las estrellas, y retornen las nubles tras la lluvia;	2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;
3 cuando tiemblen los guardas de palacio y se doblen los guerreros, se paren las moledoras, por quedar pocas, se queden a oscuras las que miran por las ventanas,	3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.
4 y se cierren las puertas de la calle, ahogándose el son del molino; cundo uno se levante al canto del pájaro, y se enmudezcan todas las canciones.	4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;
5 También la altura da recelo, y hay sustos en el camino, florece el almendro, está grávida la langosta, y pierde su sabor la alcaparra; y es que el hombre se va a su eterna morada, y circulan por la calle los del duelo;	5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;
6 mientras no se quiebre la hebra de plata, se rompa la bolita de oro, se haga añicos el cántaro contra la fuente, se caiga la polea dentro del pozo,	6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:
7 vuelva el polvo a la tierra, a lo que era, y el espíritu vuelva a Dios que es quien lo dio.	7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
8 ¡Vanidad de vanidades! - dice Cohélet -: ¡todo vanidad!	8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.
9 Cohélet, a más de ser un sabio, enseñó doctrina al pueblo. Ponderó e investigó, compuso muchos proberbios.	9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.
10 Cohélet trabajó mucho en inventar frases felices, y escribir bien sentencias verídicas.	10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.
11 Las palabras de los sabios son como aguijadas, o como estacas hincadas, puertas por un pastor para controlar el rebaño.	11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.
12 Lo que de ellas se saca, hijo mío, es ilustrarse. Componer muchos libros es nunca acabar, y estudiar demasiado daña la salud.	12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.
13 Basta de palabras. Todo está dicho. Teme a Dios y guarda sus mandamientos, que eso es ser hombre cabal.	13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.
14 Porque toda obra la emplazará Dios a juicio, también todo lo oculto, a ver si es bueno o malo.	14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.
