1 Mientras la ciudad santa era habitada en completa paz y las leyes guardadas a la perfección, gracias a la piedad y al aborrecimiento de mal del sumo sacerdote Onías,	1 While the holy city lived in perfect peace and the laws were strictly observed because of the piety of the high priest Onias and his hatred of evil,
2 sucedía que hasta los reyes veneraban el Lugar Santo y honraban el Templo con magníficos presentes,	2 the kings themselves honored the Place and glorified the temple with the most magnificent gifts.
3 hasta el punto de que Seleuco, rey de Asia, proveía con sus propias rentas a todos los gastos necesarios para el servicio de los sacrificios.	3 Thus Seleucus, king of Asia, defrayed from his own revenues all the expenses necessary for the sacrificial services.
4 Pero un tal Simón, de la tribu de Bilgá, constituido administrador del Templo, tuvo diferencias con el sumo sacerdote sobre la reglamentación del mercado de la ciudad.	4 But a certain Simon, of the priestly course of Bilgah, who had been appointed superintendent of the temple, had a quarrel with the high priest about the supervision of the city market.
5 No pudiendo vencer a Onías, se fue donde Apolonio, hijo de Traseo, estratega por entonces de Celesiria y Fenicia,	5 Since he could not prevail against Onias, he went to Apollonius of Tarsus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia,
6 y le comunicó que el tesoro de Jerusalén, estaba repleto de riquezas incontables, hasta el punto de ser incalculable la cantidad de dinero, sin equivalencia con los gastos de los sacrificios, y que era posible que cayeran en poder del rey.	6 and reported to him that the treasury in Jerusalem was so full of untold riches that the total sum of money was incalculable and out of all proportion to the cost of the sacrifices, and that it would be possible to bring it all under the control of the king.
7 Apolonio en conversación con el rey le habló de las riquezas de que había tenido noticia y entonces el rey designó a Heliodoro, el encargado de sus negocios, y le envió con la orden de realizar la trasferencia de las mencionadas riquezas.	7 When Apollonius had an audience with the king, he informed him about the riches that had been reported to him. The king chose his minister Heliodorus and sent him with instructions to expropriate the aforesaid wealth.
8 Enseguida Heliodoro emprendía el viaje con el pretexto de inspeccionar las ciudades de Celesiria y Fenicia, pero en realidad para ejecutar el proyecto del rey.	8 So Heliodorus immediately set out on his journey, ostensibly to visit the cities of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in reality to carry out the king's purpose.
9 Llegado a Jerusalén y amistosamente acogido por el sumo sacerdote y por la ciudad, expuso el hecho de la denuncia e hizo saber el motivo de su presencia; preguntó si las cosas eran realmente así.	9 When he arrived in Jerusalem and had been graciously received by the high priest of the city, he told him about the information that had been given, and explained the reason for his presence, and he asked if these things were really true.
10 Manifestó el sumo sacerdote que eran depósitos de viudas y huérfanos,	10 The high priest explained that part of the money was a care fund for widows and orphans,
11 que una parte pertenecía a Hicarno, hijo de Tobías, personaje de muy alta posición y, contra lo que había calumniado el impío Simón, que el total era de cuatrocientos talentos de plata y doscientos de oro;	11 and a part was the property of Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a man who occupied a very high position. Contrary to the calumnies of the impious Simon, the total amounted to four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold.
12 que de ningún modo se podía perjudicar a los que tenían puesta su confianza en la santidad del Lugar, y en la majestad inviolable de aquel Templo venerado en todo el mundo.	12 He added that it was utterly unthinkable to defraud those who had placed their trust in the sanctity of the Place and in the sacred inviolability of a temple venerated all over the world.
13 Pero Heliodoro, en virtud de las órdenes del rey, mantenía de forma terminante que los bienes debían pasar al tesoro real.	13 But because of the orders he had from the king, Heliodorus said that in any case the money must be confiscated for the royal treasury.
14 En la fecha fijada hacía su entrada para realizar el inventario de los bienes. No era pequeña la angustia en toda la ciudad:	14 So on the day he had set he went in to take an inventory of the funds. There was great distress throughout the city.
15 los sacerdotes, postrados ante el altar con sus vestiduras sacerdotales, suplicaban al Cielo, el que había dado la ley sobre los bienes en depósito, que los guardara intactos para quienes los habían depositado.	15 Priests prostrated themselves in their priestly robes before the altar, and loudly begged him in heaven who had given the law about deposits to keep the deposits safe for those who had made them.
16 El ver la figura del sumo sacerdote llegaba a partir el alma, pues su aspecto y su color demudado manifestaban la angustia de su alma.	16 Whoever saw the appearance of the high priest was pierced to the heart, for the changed color of his face manifested the anguish of his soul.
17 Aquel hombre estaba embargado de miedo y temblor en su cuerpo, con lo que mostraba a los que le contemplaban el dolor que había en su corazón.	17 The terror and bodily trembling that had come over the man clearly showed those who saw him the pain that lodged in his heart.
18 De las casas salía en tropel la gente a una rogativa pública porque el lugar estaba a punto de caer en oprobio.	18 People rushed out of their houses in crowds to make public supplication, because the Place was in danger of being profaned.
19 Las mujeres, ceñidas de saco bajo el pecho, llenaban las calles; de las jóvenes, que estaban recluidas, unas corrían a las puertas, otras subían a los muros, otras se asomaban por las ventanas.	19 Women, girded with sackcloth below their breasts, filled the streets; maidens secluded indoors ran together, some to the gates, some to the walls, others peered through the windows,
20 Todas, con las manos tendidas al cielo, tomaban parte en la súplica.	20 all of them with hands raised toward heaven, making supplication.
21 Daba compasión aquella multitud confusamente postrada y el sumo sacerdote angustiado en honda ansiedad.	21 It was pitiful to see the populace variously prostrated in prayer and the high priest full of dread and anguish.
22 Mientras ellos invocaban al Señor Todopoderoso para que guardara intactos, en completa seguridad, los bienes en depósito para quienes los habían confiado,	22 While they were imploring the almighty Lord to keep the deposits safe and secure for those who had placed them in trust,
23 Heliodoro llevaba a cabo lo que tenía decidido.	23 Heliodorus went on with his plan.
24 Estaba ya allí mismo con su guardia junto al Tesoro, cuando el Soberano de los Espíritus y de toda Potestad, se manifestó en su grandeza, de modo que todos los que con él juntos se habían atrevido a acercarse, pasmados ante el poder de Dios, se volvieron débiles y cobardes.	24 But just as he was approaching the treasury with his bodyguards, the Lord of spirits who holds all power manifested himself in so striking a way that those who had been bold enough to follow Heliodorus were panic-stricken at God's power and fainted away in terror.
25 Pues se les apareció un caballo montado por un jinete terrible y guarnecido con riquísimo arnés; lanzándose con ímpetu levantó contra Heliodoro sus patas delanteras. El que lo montaba aparecía con una armadura de oro.	25 There appeared to them a richly caparisoned horse, mounted by a dreadful rider. Charging furiously, the horse attacked Heliodorus with its front hoofs. The rider was seen to be wearing golden armor.
26 Se le aparecieron además otros dos jóvenes de notable vigor, espléndida belleza y magníficos vestidos que colocándose a ambos lados, le azotaban sin cesar, moliéndolo a golpes.	26 Then two other young men, remarkably strong, strikingly beautiful, and splendidly attired, appeared before him. Standing on each side of him, they flogged him unceasingly until they had given him innumerable blows.
27 Al caer de pronto a tierra, rodeado de densa oscuridad, lo recogieron y lo pusieron en una litera;	27 Suddenly he fell to the ground, enveloped in great darkness. Men picked him up and laid him on a stretcher.
28 al mismo que poco antes, con numeroso séquito y con toda su guardia, había entrado en el mencionado Tesoro, lo llevaban ahora incapaz de valerse por sí mismo, reconociendo todos claramente la soberanía de Dios.	28 The man who a moment before had entered that treasury with a great retinue and his whole bodyguard was carried away helpless, having clearly experienced the sovereign power of God.
29 Mientras él yacía mudo y privado de toda esperanza de salvación, a causa del poder divino,	29 While he lay speechless and deprived of all hope of aid, due to an act of God's power,
30 otros bendecían al Señor que había glorificado maravillosamente su propio Lugar; y el Templo, lleno poco antes de miedo y turbación, rebosaba de gozo y alegría después de la manifestación del Señor Todopoderoso.	30 the Jews praised the Lord who had marvelously glorified his holy Place; and the temple, charged so shortly before with fear and commotion, was filled with joy and gladness, now that the almighty Lord had manifested himself.
31 Pronto algunos de los acompañantes de Heliodoro, instaban a Onías que invocara al Altísimo para que diese la gracia de vivir a aquel que yacía ya en su último suspiro.	31 Soon some of the companions of Heliodorus begged Onias to invoke the Most High, praying that the life of the man who was about to expire might be spared.
32 Temiendo el sumo sacerdote que acaso el rey sospechara que los judíos hubieran perpetrado alguna fechoría contra Heliodoro, ofreció un sacrificio por la salud de aquel hombre.	32 Fearing that the king might think that Heliodorus had suffered some foul play at the hands of the Jews, the high priest offered a sacrifice for the man's recovery.
33 Mientras el sumo sacerdote ofrecía el sacrificio de expiación, se aparecieron otra vez a Heliodoro los mismos jóvenes, vestidos con la misma indumentaria y en pie le dijeron: «Da muchas gracias al sumo sacerdote Onías, pues por él te concede el Señor la gracia de vivir;	33 While the high priest was offering the sacrifice of atonement, the same young men in the same clothing again appeared and stood before Heliodorus. "Be very grateful to the high priest Onias," they told him. "It is for his sake that the Lord has spared your life.
34 y tú, que has sido azotado por el Cielo, haz saber a todos la grandeza del poder de Dios». En diciendo esto, desparacieron.	34 Since you have been scourged by Heaven, proclaim to all men the majesty of God's power." When they had said this, they disappeared.
35 Heliodoro, habiendo ofrecido al Señor un sacrificio y tras haber orado largamente al que le había concedido la vida, se despidió de Onías y volvió con sus tropas donde el rey.	35 After Heliodorus had offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to him who had spared his life, he bade Onias farewell, and returned with his soldiers to the king.
36 Ante todos daba testimonio de las obras del Dios grande que él había contemplado con sus ojos.	36 Before all men he gave witness to the deeds of the most high God that he had seen with his own eyes.
37 Al preguntar el rey a Heliodoro a quién convendría enviar otra vez a Jerusalén, él respondió:	37 When the king asked Heliodorus who would be a suitable man to be sent to Jerusalem next, he answered:
38 «Si tienes algún enemigo conspirador contra el Estado, mándalo allá y te volverá molido a azotes, si es que salva su vida, porque te aseguro que rodea a aquel Lugar una fuerza divina.	38 "If you have an enemy or a plotter against the government, send him there, and you will receive him back well-flogged, if indeed he survives at all; for there is certainly some special divine power about the Place.
39 Pues el mismo que tiene en los cielos su morada, vela y protege aquel Lugar; y a los que se acercan con malas intenciones los hiere de muerte».	39 He who has his dwelling in heaven watches over that Place and protects it, and he strikes down and destroys those who come to harm it."
40 Así sucedieron las cosas relativas a Heliodoro y a la preservación del Tesoro.	40 This was how the matter concerning Heliodorus and the preservation of the treasury turned out.
