1 Un hombre de la casa de Leví fue a tomar por mujer una hija de Leví.	1 Now a certain man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2 Concibió la mujer y dio a luz un hijo; y viendo que era hermoso lo tuvo escondido durante tres meses.	2 who conceived and bore a son. Seeing that he was a goodly child, she hid him for three months.
3 Pero no pudiendo ocultarlo ya por más tiempo, tomó una cestilla de papiro, la calafateó con betún y pez, metió en ella al niño, y la puso entre los juncos, a la orilla del Río.	3 When she could hide him no longer, she took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the river bank.
4 La hermana del niño se apostó a lo lejos para ver lo que le pasaba.	4 His sister stationed herself at a distance to find out what would happen to him.
5 Bajó la hija de Faraón a bañarse en el Río y, mientras sus doncellas se paseaban por la orilla del Río, divisó la cestilla entre los juncos, y envió una criada suya para que la cogiera.	5 Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her maids walked along the river bank. Noticing the basket among the reeds, she sent her handmaid to fetch it.
6 Al abrirla, vio que era un niño que lloraba. Se compadeció de él y exclamó: «Es uno de los niños hebreos.»	6 On opening it, she looked, and lo, there was a baby boy, crying! She was moved with pity for him and said, "It is one of the Hebrews' children."
7 Entonces dijo la hermana a la hija de Faraón: «¿Quieres que yo vaya y llame una nodriza de entre las hebreas para que te críe este niño?»	7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?"
8 «Vete», le contestó la hija de Faraón. Fue, pues, la joven y llamó a la madre del niño.	8 "Yes, do so," she answered. So the maiden went and called the child's own mother.
9 Y la hija de Faraón le dijo: «Toma este niño y críamelo que yo te pagaré.» Tomó la mujer al niño y lo crió.	9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will repay you." The woman therefore took the child and nursed it.
10 El niño creció, y ella lo llevó entonces a la hija de Faraón, que lo tuvo por hijo, y le llamó Moisés, diciendo: «De las aguas lo he sacado.»	10 When the child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, who adopted him as her son and called him Moses; for she said, "I drew him out of the water."
11 En aquellos días, cuando Moisés ya fue mayor, fue a visitar a sus hermanos, y comprobó sus penosos trabajos; vio también cómo un egipcio golpeaba a un hebreo, a uno de sus hermanos.	11 On one occasion, after Moses had grown up, when he visited his kinsmen and witnessed their forced labor, he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his own kinsmen.
12 Miró a uno y a otro lado, y no viendo a nadie, mató al egipcio y lo escondió en la arena.	12 Looking about and seeing no one, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
13 Salió al día siguiente y vio a dos hebreos que reñían. Y dijo al culpable: «¿Por qué pegas a tu compañero?»	13 The next day he went out again, and now two Hebrews were fighting! So he asked the culprit, "Why are you striking your fellow Hebrew?"
14 El respondió: «¿Quién te ha puesto de jefe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿Acaso estás pensando en matarme como mataste al egipcio?» Moisés, lleno de temor, se dijo: «La cosa ciertamente se sabe.»	14 But he replied, "Who has appointed you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses became afraid and thought, "The affair must certainly be known."
15 Supo Faraón lo sucedido y buscaba a Moisés para matarle; pero él huyó de la presencia de Faraón, y se fue a vivir al país de Madián. Se sentó junto a un pozo.	15 Pharaoh, too, heard of the affair and sought to put him to death. But Moses fled from him and stayed in the land of Midian. As he was seated there by a well,
16 Tenía un sacerdote de Madián siete hijas, que fueron a sacar agua y llenar los pilones para abrevar las ovejas de su padre.	16 seven daughters of a priest of Midian came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father's flock.
17 Pero vinieron los pastores y las echaron. Entonces, levantándose Moisés, salió en su defensa y les abrevó el rebaño.	17 But some shepherds came and drove them away. Then Moses got up and defended them and watered their flock.
18 Al volver ellas a donde su padre Reuel, éste les dijo: «Cómo es que venís hoy tan pronto?»	18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, "How is it you have returned so soon today?"
19 Respondieron: «Un egipcio nos libró de las manos de los pastores, y además sacó agua para nosotras y abrevó el rebaño.»	19 They answered, "An Egyptian saved us from the interference of the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock!"
20 Preguntó entonces a sus hijas: «¿Y dónde está? ¿Cómo así habéis dejado a ese hombre? Llamadle para que coma.»	20 "Where is the man?" he asked his daughters. "Why did you leave him there? Invite him to have something to eat."
21 Aceptó Moisés morar con aquel hombre, que dio a Moisés su hija Séfora.	21 Moses agreed to live with him, and the man gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.
22 Esta dio a luz un hijo y llamóle Guersom, pues dijo: «Forastero soy en tierra extraña.»	22 She bore him a son, whom he named Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."
23 Durante este largo período murió el rey de Egipto; los israelitas, gimiendo bajo la servidumbre, clamaron, y su clamor, que brotaba del fondo de su esclavitud, subió a Dios.	23 A long time passed, during which the king of Egypt died. Still the Israelites groaned and cried out because of their slavery. As their cry for release went up to God,
24 Oyó Dios sus gemidos, y acordóse Dios de su alianza con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.	24 he heard their groaning and was mindful of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
25 Y miró Dios a los hijos de Israel y conoció...	25 He saw the Israelites and knew. . . .
