Judit 14

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Judit les dijo: «Escuchadme, hermanos; tomad esta cabeza y colgadle en el saliente de nuestras murallas;	1 Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.
2 y apenas despunte el alba y salga el sol sobre la tierra, empuñaréis cada uno vuestras armas y saldréis fuera de la ciudad todos los hombres capaces. Que se ponga uno al frente, como si intentarais bajar a la llanura, contra la avanzada de los asirios. Pero no bajéis.	2 When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leavethe town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advancedpost. But you must not do this.
3 Los asirios tomarán sus armas y marcharán a su campamento para despertar a los jefes del ejército de Asiria. Correrán a la tienda de Holofernes, pero al no dar con él, quedarán aterrorizados y huirán ante vosotros.	3 The Assyrians wil gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; theyin turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and fleeat your advance.
4 Entonces, vosotros y todos los habitantes del territorio de Israel, saldréis en su persecución y los abatiréis en la retirada.	4 Al you and the others who live in the territory of Israel wil have to do is to give chase and slaughterthem as they retreat.
5 «Pero antes, traed aquí a Ajior el ammonita, para que vea y reconozca al que despreciaba a la casa de Israel, al que le envió a nosotros como destinado a la muerte».	5 'But before you do this, cal me Achior the Ammonite, for him to see and identify the man who held theHouse of Israel in contempt, the man who sent him to us as someone already doomed to die.'
6 Hicieron, pues, venir a Ajior desde la casa de Ozías. 7 Cuando le reanimaron, se echó a los pies de Judit, se postró ante ella y dijo: «¡Bendita seas en todas las tiendas de Judá y en todas las naciones que, cuando oigan pronunciar tu nombre, se sentirán turbadas!»	7 They lifted him up. He then threw himself at Judith's feet and, prostrate before her, exclaimed: May yoube blessed in al the tents of Judah and in every nation; those who hear your name wil be seized with dread!
8 «Y ahora, cuéntame lo que has hecho durante este tiempo». Judit le contó, en medio del pueblo, todo cuanto había hecho, desde que salió hasta el momento en que les estaba hablando.	8 'Now tel me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people,Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.
9 Cuando hubo acabado su relato, todo el pueblo lanzó grandes aclamaciones y en toda la ciudad resonaron los gritos de alegría.	9 When she came to the end, the people cheered at the top of their voices until the town echoed.
10 Ajior, por su parte, viendo todo cuanto había hecho el Dios de Israel, creyó en él firmemente, se hizo circuncidar y quedó anexionado para siempre a la casa de Israel.	10 Achior, recognising al that the God of Israel had done, believed ardently in him and, acceptingcircumcision, was permanently incorporated into the House of Israel.
11 Apenas despuntó el alba, colgaron de la muralla la cabeza de Holofernes, tomaron las armas todos los hombres de Israel y salieron, por grupos, hacia las subidas.	11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they alwent out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.
12 Al verlos los asirios, communicaron la novedad a sus oficiales, y éstos la fueron comunicando a sus estrategas y comandantes y a todos sus jefes,	12 Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, thecaptains of thousands and al the other officers;
13 hasta llegar a la tienda de Holofernes. Dijeron, pues, a su intendente general: «Despierta a nuestro señor, porque esos esclavos tienen la osadía de bajar a combatir contra nosotros, para hacerse exterminar completamente».	13 and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'
14 Entró, pues, Bagoas y dio palmadas ante la cortina de la tienda, porque suponía que Holofernes estaría durmiendo con Judit.	14 Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping withJudith.
15 Como nadie respondía, apartó la cortina, entró en el dormitorio, y lo encontró tendido sobre el umbral muerto y decapitado.	15 But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him throwndown dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.
16 Dio entonces una gran voz, con gemido y llanto y fuertes alaridos, al tiempo que rasgaba sus vestiduras.	16 He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.
17 Entró luego en la tienda en que se había aposentado Judit, y al no verla, se precipitó hacia la tropa gritando:	17 He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing outto the men, he shouted,
18 «¡Esas esclavas eran unas pérfidas! Una sola mujer hebrea ha llenado de vergüenza la casa del rey Nabucodonosor. ¡Mirad a Holofernes, derribado en tierra y decapitado!»	18 'The slaves have rebel ed! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House ofNebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'
19 Cuando los jefes del ejército asirio oyeron estas palabras, su ánimo quedó turbado hasta el extremo, rasgaron sus túnicas y lanzaron grandes gritos y voces por todo el campamento.	19 When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and thecamp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.
