1 Siete años tenía Joás cuando empezó a reinar, y reinó cuarenta años en Jerusalén. Su madre se llamaba Sibía de Berseba.	1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.
2 Joás hizo lo recto a los ojos de Yahveh durante toda la vida del sacerdote Yehoyadá.	2 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.
3 Este le casó con dos mujeres, y engendró hijos e hijas.	3 Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
4 Después de esto resolvió Joás restaurar la Casa de Yahveh.	4 After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.
5 Reunió a los sacerdotes y a los levitas y les dijo: «Recorred las ciudades de Judá y juntad cada año plata en todo Israel para reparar la Casa de vuestro Dios; y daos prisa en ello». Pero los levitas no se dieron prisa.	5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.
6 Llamó entonces el rey a Yehoyadá, sumo sacerdote, y le dijo: «¿Por qué no has tenido cuidado de que los levitas trajesen de Judá y de Jerusalén la contribución que Moisés, siervo de Yahveh, y la asamblea de Israel prescribieron para la Tienda del Testimonio?»	6 Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"
7 Pues la impía Atalía y sus hijos habían arruinado la Casa de Dios, llegando incluso a emplear para los Baales todas las cosas consagradas a la Casa de Yahveh.	7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.
8 Mandó, pues, el rey que se hiciera un cofre, que fue colocado junto a la puerta de la Casa de Yahveh, por la parte exterior;	8 At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.
9 y echaron bando en Judá y en Jerusalén de que trajesen a Yahveh la contribución que Moisés, siervo de Dios, había impuesto a Israel en el desierto.	9 They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.
10 Todos los jefes y todo el pueblo se alegraron; y traían la contribución y la echaban en el cofre hasta que se llenaba.	10 All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.
11 Cuando llevaban el cofre a los inspectores del rey, por medio de los levitas, si veían que había mucho dinero, venía el secretario del rey y el inspector del sumo sacerdote para vaciar el cofre; luego, lo tomaban y lo volvían a su lugar. Así lo hacían cada vez, y recogían dinero en abundancia.	11 Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place. This they did day after day until they had collected a large sum of money.
12 El rey y Yehoyadá se lo daban a los encargados de las obras del servicio de la Casa de Yahveh, y éstos tomaban a sueldo canteros y carpinteros para restaurar la Casa de Yahveh, y también a los que trabajaban en hierro y bronce, para reparar la Casa de Yahveh.	12 Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron-and bronze-smiths to repair it.
13 Trabajaron, pues, los encargados de la obra, y con sus trabajos adelantaron las reparaciones del edificio; restituyeron la Casa de Dios a su primer estado y la consolidaron.	13 The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.
14 Acabado el trabajo, entregaron al rey y a Yehoyadá el resto del dinero, con el cual hicieron objetos para la Casa de Yahveh, utensilios para el ministerio y para los holocaustos, vasos y objetos de oro y plata. Durante toda la vida de Yehoyadá se ofrecieron siempre holocaustos en la Casa de Yahveh.	14 After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils. They offered holocausts in the LORD'S temple continually throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada.
15 Envejeció Yehoyadá, y murió colmado de días. Tenía 130 años cuando murió.	15 Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.
16 Le sepultaron en la Ciudad de David, con los reyes, porque había hecho el bien en Israel, con Dios y con su Casa.	16 He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.
17 Después de la muerte de Yehoyadá vinieron los jefes de Judá a postrarse delante del rey, y entonces el rey les prestó oído.	17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.
18 Abandonaron la Casa de Yahveh, el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron a los cipos y a los ídolos; la cólera estalló contra Judá y Jerusalén a causa de esta culpa suya.	18 They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.
19 Yahveh les envió profetas que dieron testimonio contra ellos para que se convirtiesen a él, pero no les prestaron oído.	19 Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.
20 Entonces el espíritu de Dios revistió a Zacarías, hijo del sacerdote Yehoyadá que, presentándose delante del pueblo, les dijo: «Así dice Dios: ¿Por qué traspasáis los mandamientos de Yahveh? No tendréis éxito; pues por haber abandonado a Yahveh, él os abandonará a vosotros».	20 Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"
21 Mas ellos conspiraron contra él, y por mandato del rey le apedrearon en el atrio de la Casa de Yahveh.	21 But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.
22 Pues el rey Joás no se acordó del amor que le había tenido Yehoyadá, padre de Zacarías, sino que mató a su hijo, que exclamó al morir: «¡Véalo Yahveh y exija cuentas!»	22 Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."
23 A la vuelta de un año subió contra Joás el ejército de los arameos, que invadieron Judá y Jerusalén, mataron de entre la población a todos los jefes del pueblo, y enviaron todo el botín al rey de Damasco,	23 At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.
24 pues aunque el ejército de los arameos había venido con poca gente, Yahveh entregó en sus manos a un ejército muy grande; porque habían abandonado a Yahveh, el Dios de sus padres. De este modo los arameos hicieron justicia con Joás.	24 Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.
25 Y cuando se alejaron de él, dejándole gravemente enfermo, se conjuraron contra él sus servidores, por la sangre del hijo del sacerdote Yehoyadá, le mataron en su lecho y murió. Le sepultaron en la Ciudad de David, pero no le sepultaron en los sepulcros de los reyes.	25 After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
26 Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad, hijo de Simat la ammonita, y Yehozabad, hijo de Simrit la moabita.	26 These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.
27 Lo tocante a sus hijos, la gran cantidad de impuestos que percibió y la restauración de la Casa de Dios, se halla escrito en el midrás del libro de los reyes. En su lugar reinó su hijo Amasías.	27 Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.
