BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Después de esto, murió Najas, rey de los ammonitas, y en su lugar reinó su hijo.	1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,
2 Dijo entonces David: «Tendré con Janún, hijo de Najás, la misma benevolencia que su padre tuvo conmigo». Y envió David mensajeros para que le consolaran por su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los ammonitas, donde Janún, para consolarle,	2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,
3 dijeron los príncipes de los ammonitas a Janún: «¿ Es que David ha enviado a consolarte porque quiere hacer honor a tu padre ante tus ojos? ¿No han venido a ti sus servidores más bien para explorar y destruir y para espiar el país?»	3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'
4 Prendió, pues, Janún a los servidores de David, les rapó, cortó a media altura sus vestidos, y los despachó.	4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Fueron a avisar a David lo de estos hombres; y él envió gente a su encuentro, porque los hombres estaban cubiertos de vergüenza. El rey les dijo: «Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba y después volveréis».	5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'
6 Cuando los ammonitas vieron que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Janún y los ammonitas enviaron mil talentos de plata para tomar a sueldo carros y hombres de carro de Aram de Mesopotamia, de Aram de Maaká y de Sobá.	6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.
7 Tomaron a sueldo 32.000 carros y al rey de Maaká con su ejército, los cuales vinieron y acamparon frente a Medebá. Los ammonitas se congregaron también desde sus ciudades y salieron a campaña.	7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.
8 David lo supo y envió a Joab con toda la tropa y con los valientes.	8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.
9 Salieron a campaña los ammonitas y se ordenaron en batalla a la entrada de la ciudad, mientras que los reyes que habían venido estaban aparte en el campo.	9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.
10 Viendo Joab que tenía un frente de combate por delante y otro por detrás escogió los mejores de Israel y los puso en línea contra Aram.	10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.
11 Puso el resto del ejército al mando de su hermano Abisay y lo ordenó en batalla frente a los ammonitas.	11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.
12 Dijo Joab: «Si los arameos me dominan, ven en mi ayuda; y si los hijos de Ammón te dominan a ti, iré en tu socorro.	12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.
13 ¡Ten fortaleza y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! ¡Y que Yahveh haga lo que bien le parezca!»	13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'
14 Y avanzó Joab con su ejercito para luchar contra los arameos, que huyeron delante de él.	14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.
15 Viendo los ammonitas que los arameos emprendían la fuga, huyeron también ellos ante Abisay, hermano de Joab, y entraron en la ciudad, mientras que Joab volvió a Jerusalén.	15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.
16 Al ver los arameos que habían sido vencidos por Israel, enviaron emisarios para hacer venir a los arameos del otro lado del Río; venía a su cabeza Sofak, jefe de las tropas de Hadadézer.	16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.
17 Se dio aviso a David, que reuniendo a todo Israel pasó el Jordán, llegó donde ellos estaban y tomó posiciones frente a ellos. Se puso David en orden de batalla contra los arameos y éstos trabaron combate con él.	17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.
18 Huyeron los arameos ante Israel; y David mató a los arameos 7.000 hombres de carro y 40.000 hombres de a pie. Mató también a Sofak, jefe del ejército.	18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.
19 Cuando los vasallos de Hadadézer vieron que habían sido derrotados por Israel, hicieron la paz con David y le quedaron sometidos; y los arameos no se atrevieron a seguir ayudando a los ammonitas.	19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.
