2 Samuel 11

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 A la vuelta del año, al tiempo que los reyes salen a campaña, envió David a Joab con sus veteranos y todo Israel. Derrotaron a los ammonitas y pusieron sitio a Rabbá, mientras David se quedó en Jerusalén.	1 At the turn of the year, at the time when kings go campaigning, David sent Joab and with him hisguards and al Israel. They massacred the Ammonites and laid siege to Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites. David,however, remained in Jerusalem.
2 Un atardecer se levantó David de su lecho y se paseaba por el terrado de la casa del rey cuando vio desde lo alto del terrado a una mujer que se estaba bañando. Era una mujer muy hermosa.	2 It happened towards evening when David had got up from resting and was strol ing on the palace roof,that from the roof he saw a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful.
3 Mandó David para informarse sobre la mujer y le dijeron: «Es Betsabé, hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías el hitita».	3 David made enquiries about this woman and was told, 'Why, that is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam andwife of Uriah the Hittite.'
4 David envió gente que la trajese; llegó donde David y él se acostó con ella, cuando acababa de purificarse de sus reglas. Y ella se volvió a su casa.	4 David then sent messengers to fetch her. She came to him, and he lay with her, just after she hadpurified herself from her period. She then went home again.
5 La mujer quedó embarazada y envió a decir a David: «Estoy encinta».	5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, 'I am pregnant.'
6 David mandó decir a Joab: «Envíame a Urías el hitita». Joab envió a Urías adonde David.	6 David then sent word to Joab, 'Send me Uriah the Hittite,' whereupon Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 Llegó Urías donde él y David le preguntó por Joab, y por el ejército y por la marcha de la guerra.	7 When Uriah reached him, David asked how Joab was and how the army was and how the war wasgoing.
8 Y dijo David a Urías: «Baja a tu casa y lava tus pies». Salió Urías de la casa del rey, seguido de un obsequio de la mesa real.	8 David then said to Uriah, 'Go down to your house and wash your feet.' Uriah left the palace and wasfol owed by a present from the king's table.
9 Pero Urías se acostó a la entrada de la casa del rey, con la guardia de su señor, y no bajó a su casa.	9 Uriah, however, slept at the palace gate with al his master's bodyguard and did not go down to hishouse.
10 Avisaron a David: «Urías no ha bajado a su casa». Preguntó David a Urías: «¿No vienes de un viaje? ¿Por qué no has bajado a tu casa?	10 This was reported to David; 'Uriah', they said 'has not gone down to his house.' So David askedUriah, 'Haven't you just arrived from the journey? Why didn't you go down to your house?'
11 Urías respondió a David: «El arca, Israel y Judá habitan en tiendas; Joab mi señor y los siervos de mi señor acampan en el suelo ¿y voy a entrar yo en mi casa para comer, beber y acostarme con mi mujer? ¡Por tu vida y la vida de tu alma, no haré tal!»	11 To which Uriah replied, 'The ark, Israel and Judah are lodged in huts; my master Joab and my lord'sguards are camping in the open. Am I to go to my house, then, and eat and drink and sleep with my wife? AsYahweh lives, and as you yourself live, I shal do no such thing!'
12 Entonces David dijo a Urías: «Quédate hoy también y mañana te despediré». Se quedó Urías aquel día en Jerusalén y al día siguiente	12 David then said to Uriah, 'Stay on here today; tomorrow I shal send you off.' So Uriah stayed thatday in Jerusalem.
13 le invitó David a comer con él y le hizo beber hasta emborracharse. Por la tarde salió y se acostó en el lecho, con la guardia de su señor, pero no bajó a su casa.	13 The next day, David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk. In the evening,Uriah went out and bedded down with his master's bodyguard, but did not go down to his house.
14 A la mañana siguiente escribió David una carta a Joab y se la envió por medio de Urías.	14 Next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by Uriah.
15 En la carta había escrito: «Poned a Urías frente a lo más reñido de la batalla y retiraos de detrás de él para que sea herido y muera».	15 In the letter he wrote, 'Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest and then fal back, so thathe gets wounded and kil ed.'
16 Estaba Joab asediando la ciudad y colocó a Urías en el sitio en que sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes.	16 Joab, then besieging the city, stationed Uriah at a point where he knew that there would be toughfighters.
17 Los hombres de la ciudad hicieron una salida y atacaron a Joab; cayeron algunos del ejército de entre los veteranos de David; y murió también Urías el hitita.	17 The people of the city sallied out and engaged Joab; there were casualties in the army, amongDavid's guards, and Uriah the Hittite was kil ed as wel .
18 Joab envió a comunicar a David todas las noticias de la guerra,	18 Joab sent David a ful account of the battle.
19 y ordenó al mensajero: «Cuando hayas acabado de decir al rey todas las noticias sobre la batalla,	19 To the messenger he gave this order: 'When you have finished tel ing the king al about the battle,
20 si salta la cólera del rey de te dice: “¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la ciudad para atacarla? ¿No sabíais que tirarían sobre vosotros desde la muralla?	20 if the king's anger is aroused and he says, "Why did you go near the town to give battle? Didn't youknow that they would shoot from the ramparts?
21 ¿Quien mató a Abimélek, el hijo de Yerubbaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer sobre él una piedra de molino desde lo alto de la muralla y murió él en Tebés? ¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla?”, tú le dices: También ha muerto tu siervo Urías el hitita».	21 Who kil ed Abimelech son of Jerubbaal? Wasn't it a woman who dropped a millstone on him from theramparts, causing his death at Thebez? Why did you go near the ramparts?" you are to say, "Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead too." '
22 Partió el mensajero y en llegando comunicó a David todo lo que le había mandado Joab. David se irritó contra Joab y dijo al mensajero: «¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla para luchar? ¿Quién mató a Abimélek, el hijo de Yerubbaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer sobre él una piedra de molino desde lo alto de la muralla y murió él en Tebés? ¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla?»	22 So the messenger set off and, on his arrival, told David everything that Joab had instructed him tosay. David flew into a rage with Joab and said to the messenger, 'Why did you go near the ramparts? Who kil edAbimelech son of Jerubbaal? Wasn't it a woman who dropped a millstone on him from the ramparts, causing hisdeath at Thebez? Why did you go near the ramparts?'
23 El mensajero dijo a David: «Aquellos hombres se crecieron frente a nosotros, hicieron una salida contra nosotros en campo raso y los rechazamos hasta la entrada de la puerta,	23 The messenger replied to David, 'Their men had won an initial advantage and then came out toengage us in the open. We then drove them back into the gateway,
24 pero los arqueros tiraron contra tus veteranos desde lo alto de la muralla y murieron algunos de los veteranos del rey. También murió tu siervo Urías el hitita».	24 but the archers shot at your retainers from the ramparts; some of the king's retainers lost their lives,and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead too.'
25 Entonces David dijo al mensajero: «Esto has de decir a Joab: “No te inquietes por este asunto, porque la espada devora ya a uno ya a otro. Redobla tu ataque contra la ciudad y destrúyela.” Y así le darás ánimos».	25 David then said to the messenger, 'Say this to Joab, "Do not take the matter to heart; the sworddevours now one and now another. Attack the town in greater force and destroy it." That wil encourage him.'
26 Supo la mujer de Urías que había muerto Urías su marido e hizo duelo por su señor.	26 When Uriah's wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 Pasado el luto, David envió por ella y la recibió en su casa haciéndola su mujer; ella le dio a luz un hijo; pero aquella acción que David había hecho desagradó a Yahveh.	27 When the period of mourning was over, David sent to have her brought to his house; she became hiswife and bore him a son. But what David had done displeased Yahweh.
