1 A la vuelta del año, al tiempo que los reyes salen a campaña, envió David a Joab con sus veteranos y todo Israel. Derrotaron a los ammonitas y pusieron sitio a Rabbá, mientras David se quedó en Jerusalén.	1 At the turn of the year, when kings go out on campaign, David sent out Joab along with his officers and the army of Israel, and they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. David, however, remained in Jerusalem.
2 Un atardecer se levantó David de su lecho y se paseaba por el terrado de la casa del rey cuando vio desde lo alto del terrado a una mujer que se estaba bañando. Era una mujer muy hermosa.	2 One evening David rose from his siesta and strolled about on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing, who was very beautiful.
3 Mandó David para informarse sobre la mujer y le dijeron: «Es Betsabé, hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías el hitita».	3 David had inquiries made about the woman and was told, "She is Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam, and wife of (Joab's armor-bearer) Uriah the Hittite."
4 David envió gente que la trajese; llegó donde David y él se acostó con ella, cuando acababa de purificarse de sus reglas. Y ella se volvió a su casa.	4 Then David sent messengers and took her. When she came to him, he had relations with her, at a time when she was just purified after her monthly period. She then returned to her house.
5 La mujer quedó embarazada y envió a decir a David: «Estoy encinta».	5 But the woman had conceived, and sent the information to David, "I am with child."
6 David mandó decir a Joab: «Envíame a Urías el hitita». Joab envió a Urías adonde David.	6 David therefore sent a message to Joab, "Send me Uriah the Hittite." So Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 Llegó Urías donde él y David le preguntó por Joab, y por el ejército y por la marcha de la guerra.	7 When he came, David questioned him about Joab, the soldiers, and how the war was going, and Uriah answered that all was well.
8 Y dijo David a Urías: «Baja a tu casa y lava tus pies». Salió Urías de la casa del rey, seguido de un obsequio de la mesa real.	8 David then said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and bathe your feet." Uriah left the palace, and a portion was sent out after him from the king's table.
9 Pero Urías se acostó a la entrada de la casa del rey, con la guardia de su señor, y no bajó a su casa.	9 But Uriah slept at the entrance of the royal palace with the other officers of his lord, and did not go down to his own house.
10 Avisaron a David: «Urías no ha bajado a su casa». Preguntó David a Urías: «¿No vienes de un viaje? ¿Por qué no has bajado a tu casa?	10 David was told that Uriah had not gone home. So he said to Uriah, "Have you not come from a journey? Why, then, did you not go down to your house?"
11 Urías respondió a David: «El arca, Israel y Judá habitan en tiendas; Joab mi señor y los siervos de mi señor acampan en el suelo ¿y voy a entrar yo en mi casa para comer, beber y acostarme con mi mujer? ¡Por tu vida y la vida de tu alma, no haré tal!»	11 Uriah answered David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are lodged in tents, and my lord Joab and your majesty's servants are encamped in the open field. Can I go home to eat and to drink and to sleep with my wife? As the LORD lives and as you live, I will do no such thing."
12 Entonces David dijo a Urías: «Quédate hoy también y mañana te despediré». Se quedó Urías aquel día en Jerusalén y al día siguiente	12 Then David said to Uriah, "Stay here today also, I shall dismiss you tomorrow." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. On the day following,
13 le invitó David a comer con él y le hizo beber hasta emborracharse. Por la tarde salió y se acostó en el lecho, con la guardia de su señor, pero no bajó a su casa.	13 David summoned him, and he ate and drank with David, who made him drunk. But in the evening he went out to sleep on his bed among his lord's servants, and did not go down to his home.
14 A la mañana siguiente escribió David una carta a Joab y se la envió por medio de Urías.	14 The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab which he sent by Uriah.
15 En la carta había escrito: «Poned a Urías frente a lo más reñido de la batalla y retiraos de detrás de él para que sea herido y muera».	15 In it he directed: "Place Uriah up front, where the fighting is fierce. Then pull back and leave him to be struck down dead."
16 Estaba Joab asediando la ciudad y colocó a Urías en el sitio en que sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes.	16 So while Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew the defenders were strong.
17 Los hombres de la ciudad hicieron una salida y atacaron a Joab; cayeron algunos del ejército de entre los veteranos de David; y murió también Urías el hitita.	17 When the men of the city made a sortie against Joab, some officers of David's army fell, and among them Uriah the Hittite died.
18 Joab envió a comunicar a David todas las noticias de la guerra,	18 Then Joab sent David a report of all the details of the battle,
19 y ordenó al mensajero: «Cuando hayas acabado de decir al rey todas las noticias sobre la batalla,	19 instructing the messenger, "When you have finished giving the king all the details of the battle,
20 si salta la cólera del rey de te dice: “¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la ciudad para atacarla? ¿No sabíais que tirarían sobre vosotros desde la muralla?	20 the king may become angry and say to you: 'Why did you go near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall above?
21 ¿Quien mató a Abimélek, el hijo de Yerubbaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer sobre él una piedra de molino desde lo alto de la muralla y murió él en Tebés? ¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla?”, tú le dices: También ha muerto tu siervo Urías el hitita».	21 Who killed Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal? Was it not a woman who threw a millstone down on him from the wall above, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?' Then you in turn shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.'"
22 Partió el mensajero y en llegando comunicó a David todo lo que le había mandado Joab. David se irritó contra Joab y dijo al mensajero: «¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla para luchar? ¿Quién mató a Abimélek, el hijo de Yerubbaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer sobre él una piedra de molino desde lo alto de la muralla y murió él en Tebés? ¿Por qué os habéis acercado a la muralla?»	22 The messenger set out, and on his arrival he relayed to David all the details as Joab had instructed him.
23 El mensajero dijo a David: «Aquellos hombres se crecieron frente a nosotros, hicieron una salida contra nosotros en campo raso y los rechazamos hasta la entrada de la puerta,	23 He told David: "The men had us at a disadvantage and came out into the open against us, but we pushed them back to the entrance of the city gate.
24 pero los arqueros tiraron contra tus veteranos desde lo alto de la muralla y murieron algunos de los veteranos del rey. También murió tu siervo Urías el hitita».	24 Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall above, and some of the king's servants died, among them your servant Uriah."
25 Entonces David dijo al mensajero: «Esto has de decir a Joab: “No te inquietes por este asunto, porque la espada devora ya a uno ya a otro. Redobla tu ataque contra la ciudad y destrúyela.” Y así le darás ánimos».	25 David said to the messenger: "This is what you shall convey to Joab: 'Do not be chagrined at this, for the sword devours now here and now there. Strengthen your attack on the city and destroy it.' Encourage him."
26 Supo la mujer de Urías que había muerto Urías su marido e hizo duelo por su señor.	26 When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband had died, she mourned her lord.
27 Pasado el luto, David envió por ella y la recibió en su casa haciéndola su mujer; ella le dio a luz un hijo; pero aquella acción que David había hecho desagradó a Yahveh.	27 But once the mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her into his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. But the LORD was displeased with what David had done.
