1 « Conosci tu il tempo in cui le capre selvatiche figliano nelle rocce, hai assistito nel parto le cerve?	1 Do you know about the birth of the mountain goats, watch for the birth pangs of the hinds,
2 Hai contati i mesi di lor gravidanza, e sai il tempo del loro parto?	2 Number the months that they must fulfill, and fix the time of their bringing forth?
3 S'incurvano per dare alla luce e partoriscono mandando gemiti.	3 They crouch down and bear their young; they deliver their progeny in the desert.
4 I loro piccoli le lasciano per correre alla pastura; se ne vanno e non tornano più alle madri.	4 When their offspring thrive and grow, they leave and do not return.
5 Chi pose l'onagro in libertà e ne sciolse i legami?	5 Who has given the wild ass his freedom, and who has loosed him from bonds?
6 Io gli diedi una dimora nel deserto ed una terra salata ad abitare.	6 I have made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
7 Egli disprezza l'affollamento della città e non sente il vociar dell'aguzzino.	7 He scoffs at the uproar of the city, and hears no shouts of a driver.
8 Vo1ge in giro gli occhi alle montagne di sua pastura e va in traccia d'ogni filo d'erba.	8 He ranges the mountains for pasture, and seeks out every patch of green.
9 Il rinoceronte vorrà egli servirti? Se ne starà alla tua mangiatoia?	9 Will the wild ox consent to serve you, and to pass the nights by your manger?
10 Lo legherai al tuo giogo per arare? Romperà dietro a te le zolle delle tue valli?	10 Will a rope bind him in the furrow, and will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Ti fiderai della sua gran forza? Gli affiderai i tuoi lavori?	11 Will you trust him for his great strength and leave to him the fruits of your toil?
12 Credi tu che egli ti renda la tua sementè e ti empia la tua aia?	12 Can you rely on him to thresh out your grain and gather in the yield of your threshing floor?
13 La penna dello struzzo è simile alle penne della cicogna e dello sparviero.	13 The wings of the ostrich beat idly; her plumage is lacking in pinions.
14 Quando egli abbandona le sue ova per terra, sei forse tu che le riscaldi sulla sabbia?	14 When she leaves her eggs on the ground and deposits them in the sand,
15 Egli non pensa che un piede le potrà schiacciare, che la fiera le potrà calpestare.	15 Unmindful that a foot may crush them, that the wild beasts may trample them,
16 Spietato contro i suoi nati, come se non fossero suoi, rende la sua fatica vana anche non costretto dal timore;	16 She cruelly disowns her young and ruthlessly makes nought of her brood;
17 perché il Signore gli negò la saggezza e non gli diede giudizio.	17 For God has withheld wisdom from her and has given her no share in understanding.
18 Ma quando è tempo stende in alto le sue ali e si burla del cavallo e del cavaliere.	18 Yet in her swiftness of foot she makes sport of the horse and his rider.
19 Sarai tu quello che darai la forza al destriero e gli vestirai il collo di fremiti?	19 Do you give the horse his strength, and endow his neck with splendor?
20 E lo farai saltare come locusta? La fierezza del suo sbuffare atterrisce.	20 Do you make the steed to quiver while his thunderous snorting spreads terror?
21 Raspa la terra colla zampa, si slancia con audacia, va incontro agli armati.	21 He jubilantly paws the plain and rushes in his might against the weapons.
22 Disprezza la paura, non cede alla spada;	22 He laughs at fear and cannot be deterred; he turns not back from the sword.
23 sopra di lui risonerà il turcasso, scintillerà la lancia e lo scudo.	23 Around him rattles the quiver, flashes the spear and the javelin.
24 Spumante e fremente divora la terra, non gli par vero che suoni la tromba.	24 Frenzied and trembling he devours the ground; he holds not back at the sound of the trumpet,
25 Sentito lo squillo, dice: Via! Sente da lungi l'odor della battaglia, le esortazioni dei duci e il vociar dei soldati.	25 but at each blast he cries, "Aha!" Even from afar he scents the battle, the roar of the chiefs and the shouting.
26 Forse per la tua sapienza lo sparviero si veste di piume e spicca il volo verso il mezzodì?	26 Is it by your discernment that the hawk soars, that he spreads his wings toward the south?
27 Forse al tuo cenno l'aquila si leverà in alto e porrà il suo nido nei luoghi più dovati?	27 Does the eagle fly up at your command to build his nest aloft?
28 Sta sopra le rocce, per­notta fra i dirupi scoscesi e sopra vette inaccessibili.	28 On the cliff he dwells and spends the night, on the spur of the cliff or the fortress.
29 Di lassù con­templa la preda, e i suoi occhi ve­dono da lontano.	29 From thence he watches for his prey; his eyes behold it afar off.
30 I suoi aqui­lotti lambiscono il sangue, ed essa si trova dovunque sia un cadavere ».	30 His young ones greedily drink blood; where the slain are, there is he.
31 Poi il Signore, seguitando a parlare, disse a Giobbe:
32 « Chi chiede ragione a Dio s'acquieterà così facilmente? Certo chi critica Dio deve rispondergli ».
33 Allora Giobbe rispose al Signore, dicendo:
34 « Io, che ho parlato con leggerezza, che posso rispondere? Porrò la mia mano sulla mia bocca.
35 H0 detto una cosa, (oh, non l'avessi. detta!) e un'altra, e non dirò più nulla ».
