Proverbi 23

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Se tu siedi alla tavola di un capo, stai bene attento a ciò che ti sta davanti;	1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is before you;
2 e metti un coltello alla tua gola, se sei uno che ha molto appetito.	2 And put a knife to your throat if you have a ravenous appetite.
3 Non bramare le sue pietanze squisite, che sarebbero un cibo ingannatore.	3 Do not desire his delicacies; they are deceitful food.
4 Non ti affannare per accumulare ricchezza, cessa dal pensarci;	4 Toil not to gain wealth, cease to be concerned about it;
5 tu fissi in essa i tuoi occhi e non è più; perché mette ali come aquila che vola verso il cielo.	5 While your glance flits to it, it is gone! for assuredly it grows wings, like the eagle that flies toward heaven.
6 Non mangiare il pane di un uomo malvagio e non bramare i suoi cibi delicati;	6 Do not take food with a grudging man, and do not desire his dainties;
7 perché, come pensa nell'animo suo, così egli è; "Mangia e bevi!", ti dice, ma il suo cuore non è con te;	7 For in his greed he is like a storm. "Eat and drink," he says to you, though his heart is not with you;
8 il boccone che mangi, tu lo vomiterai e perderai il frutto dei tuoi discorsi amabili.	8 The little you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your agreeable words.
9 Non parlare alle orecchie di uno stolto; egli disprezzerebbe i tuoi saggi discorsi.	9 Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Non spostare il confine della vedova e non entrare nei campi degli orfani;	10 Remove not the ancient landmark, nor invade the fields of orphans;
11 perché il loro difensore è potente e difenderà contro di te la loro causa.	11 For their redeemer is strong; he will defend their cause against you.
12 Applica il tuo cuore all'istruzione e il tuo orecchio alle parole della scienza.	12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.
13 Non ricusare al giovane la correzione; se lo colpisci col bastone, non morrà.	13 Withhold not chastisement from a boy; if you beat him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Tu dunque col bastone colpiscilo e lo libererai dagli inferi.	14 Beat him with the rod, and you will save him from the nether world.
15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore è saggio, si allieterà anche il mio stesso cuore;	15 My son, if your heart be wise, my own heart also will rejoice;
16 giubileranno le mie viscere, se le tue labbra diranno cose rette.	16 And my inmost being will exult, when your lips speak what is right.
17 Non invidi il tuo cuore i peccatori, ma sia ogni giorno nel timor del Signore,	17 Let not your heart emulate sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD always;
18 perché certamente vi sarà un domani e la tua speranza non sarà delusa.	18 For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Tu ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio e dirigi il tuo cuore nel cammino...	19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the right way.
20 Non stare in mezzo ai bevitori di vino, né tra coloro che si rimpinzano di carne;	20 Consort not with winebibbers, nor with those who eat meat to excess;
21 perché chi si ubriaca e gozzoviglia divien povero e di stracci si veste il sonnolento.	21 For the drunkard and the glutton come to poverty, and torpor clothes a man in rags.
22 Ascolta tuo padre che ti ha generato, non disprezzar tua madre, anche se vecchia.	22 Listen to your father who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.
23 Compra la verità, non la rivendere; sapienza, disciplina e intelligenza.	23 Get the truth, and sell it not-- wisdom, instruction and understanding.
24 Il padre del giusto è pieno d'allegrezza e chi ha generato un saggio ne gioisce.	24 The father of a just man will exult with glee; he who begets a wise son will have joy in him.
25 Si rallegri per te tuo padre, esulti colei che ti ha dato la vita.	25 Let your father and mother have joy; let her who bore you exult.
26 Dammi, figlio mio, il tuo cuore, i tuoi occhi si dilettino delle mie vie.	26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.
27 Perché fossa profonda è la prostituta e un pozzo stretto è la donna altrui.	27 For the harlot is a deep ditch, and the adulteress a narrow pit;
28 Proprio come un ladro sta in agguato, fra gli uomini moltiplica i fedifraghi.	28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the faithless among men.
29 Per chi gli "ohi!", per chi gli "ahimè!"? Per chi le risse, per chi i lamenti? Per chi le ferite senza ragione? Per chi gli occhi turbati?	29 Who scream? Who shriek? Who have strife? Who have anxiety? Who have wounds for nothing? Who have black eyes?
30 Per chi fa sempre tardi per il vino, per chi va in cerca di vino pregiato.	30 Those who linger long over wine, those who engage in trials of blended wine.
31 Non guardare il vino, perché è rosso, come mostra il suo splendore nella coppa, e va giù così soavemente!	31 Look not on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the glass. It goes down smoothly;
32 Poi alla fine morde come una serpe e come una vipera avvelena!	32 but in the end it bites like a serpent, or like a poisonous adder.
33 I tuoi occhi vedranno cose strane e il tuo cuore dirà cose sconnesse.	33 Your eyes behold strange sights, and your heart utters disordered thoughts;
34 Sarai come chi giace in mezzo al mare, chi siede sopra l'albero maestro:	34 You are like one now lying in the depths of the sea, now sprawled at the top of the mast.
35 "Mi han percosso! Ma io non sento niente! Mi han picchiato! Non me ne sono accorto! Quando mi sveglierò?... Ne domanderò dell'altro!".	35 "They struck me, but it pained me not; They beat me, but I felt it not; When shall I awake to seek wine once again?"
