1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.	1 Einige Zeit später war ein Fest der Juden und Jesus ging hinauf nach Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes.	2 In Jerusalem gibt es beim Schaftor einen Teich, zu dem fünf Säulenhallen gehören; dieser Teich heißt auf Hebräisch Betesda.
3 In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed.	3 In diesen Hallen lagen viele Kranke, darunter Blinde, Lahme und Verkrüppelte.

5 One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years.	5 Dort lag auch ein Mann, der schon achtunddreißig Jahre krank war.
6 When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"	6 Als Jesus ihn dort liegen sah und erkannte, dass er schon lange krank war, fragte er ihn: Willst du gesund werden?
7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me."	7 Der Kranke antwortete ihm: Herr, ich habe keinen Menschen, der mich, sobald das Wasser aufwallt, in den Teich trägt. Während ich mich hinschleppe, steigt schon ein anderer vor mir hinein.
8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk."	8 Da sagte Jesus zu ihm: Steh auf, nimm deine Bahre und geh!
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath.	9 Sofort wurde der Mann gesund, nahm seine Bahre und ging. Dieser Tag war aber ein Sabbat.
10 So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet."	10 Da sagten die Juden zu dem Geheilten: Es ist Sabbat, du darfst deine Bahre nicht tragen.
11 But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.'"	11 Er erwiderte: Der Mann, der mich gesund gemacht hat, sagte zu mir: Nimm deine Bahre und geh!
12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?"	12 Sie fragten ihn: Wer ist das denn, der zu dir gesagt hat: Nimm deine Bahre und geh?
13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.	13 Der Geheilte wusste aber nicht, wer es war. Jesus war nämlich weggegangen, weil sich dort eine große Menschenmenge angesammelt hatte.
14 Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you."	14 Später traf ihn Jesus im Tempel und sagte zu ihm: Jetzt bist du gesund; sündige nicht mehr, damit dir nicht noch Schlimmeres zustößt.
15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.	15 Der Mann ging fort und teilte den Juden mit, dass es Jesus war, der ihn gesund gemacht hatte.
16 And this was why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this on the sabbath.	16 Daraufhin verfolgten die Juden Jesus, weil er das an einem Sabbat getan hatte.
17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working still, and I am working."	17 Jesus aber entgegnete ihnen: Mein Vater ist noch immer am Werk und auch ich bin am Werk.
18 This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.	18 Darum waren die Juden noch mehr darauf aus, ihn zu töten, weil er nicht nur den Sabbat brach, sondern auch Gott seinen Vater nannte und sich damit Gott gleichstellte.
19 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise.	19 Jesus aber sagte zu ihnen: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Der Sohn kann nichts von sich aus tun, sondern nur, wenn er den Vater etwas tun sieht. Was nämlich der Vater tut, das tut in gleicher Weise der Sohn.
20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all that he himself is doing; and greater works than these will he show him, that you may marvel.	20 Denn der Vater liebt den Sohn und zeigt ihm alles, was er tut, und noch größere Werke wird er ihm zeigen, sodass ihr staunen werdet.
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.	21 Denn wie der Vater die Toten auferweckt und lebendig macht, so macht auch der Sohn lebendig, wen er will.
22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,	22 Auch richtet der Vater niemand, sondern er hat das Gericht ganz dem Sohn übertragen,
23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.	23 damit alle den Sohn ehren, wie sie den Vater ehren. Wer den Sohn nicht ehrt, ehrt auch den Vater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat.
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.	24 Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Wer mein Wort hört und dem glaubt, der mich gesandt hat, hat das ewige Leben; er kommt nicht ins Gericht, sondern ist aus dem Tod ins Leben hinübergegangen.
25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.	25 Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Die Stunde kommt und sie ist schon da, in der die Toten die Stimme des Sohnes Gottes hören werden; und alle, die sie hören, werden leben.
26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself,	26 Denn wie der Vater das Leben in sich hat, so hat er auch dem Sohn gegeben, das Leben in sich zu haben.
27 and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man.	27 Und er hat ihm Vollmacht gegeben, Gericht zu halten, weil er der Menschensohn ist.
28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice	28 Wundert euch nicht darüber! Die Stunde kommt, in der alle, die in den Gräbern sind, seine Stimme hören
29 and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.	29 und herauskommen werden: Die das Gute getan haben, werden zum Leben auferstehen, die das Böse getan haben, zum Gericht.
30 "I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.	30 Von mir selbst aus kann ich nichts tun; ich richte, wie ich es (vom Vater) höre, und mein Gericht ist gerecht, weil es mir nicht um meinen Willen geht, sondern um den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.
31 If I bear witness to myself, my testimony is not true;	31 Wenn ich über mich selbst als Zeuge aussage, ist mein Zeugnis nicht gültig;
32 there is another who bears witness to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is true.	32 ein anderer ist es, der über mich als Zeuge aussagt, und ich weiß: Das Zeugnis, das er über mich ablegt, ist gültig.
33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.	33 Ihr habt zu Johannes geschickt, und er hat für die Wahrheit Zeugnis abgelegt.
34 Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved.	34 Ich aber nehme von keinem Menschen ein Zeugnis an, sondern ich sage dies nur, damit ihr gerettet werdet.
35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.	35 Jener war die Lampe, die brennt und leuchtet, und ihr wolltet euch eine Zeit lang an seinem Licht erfreuen.
36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me.	36 Ich aber habe ein gewichtigeres Zeugnis als das des Johannes: Die Werke, die mein Vater mir übertragen hat, damit ich sie zu Ende führe, diese Werke, die ich vollbringe, legen Zeugnis dafür ab, dass mich der Vater gesandt hat.
37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness to me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen;	37 Auch der Vater selbst, der mich gesandt hat, hat über mich Zeugnis abgelegt. Ihr habt weder seine Stimme gehört noch seine Gestalt je gesehen,
38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent.	38 und auch sein Wort bleibt nicht in euch, weil ihr dem nicht glaubt, den er gesandt hat.
39 You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me;	39 Ihr erforscht die Schriften, weil ihr meint, in ihnen das ewige Leben zu haben; gerade sie legen Zeugnis über mich ab.
40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.	40 Und doch wollt ihr nicht zu mir kommen, um das Leben zu haben.
41 I do not receive glory from men.	41 Meine Ehre empfange ich nicht von Menschen.
42 But I know that you have not the love of God within you.	42 Ich habe erkannt, dass ihr die Liebe zu Gott nicht in euch habt.
43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.	43 Ich bin im Namen meines Vaters gekommen und doch lehnt ihr mich ab. Wenn aber ein anderer in seinem eigenen Namen kommt, dann werdet ihr ihn anerkennen.
44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?	44 Wie könnt ihr zum Glauben kommen, wenn ihr eure Ehre voneinander empfangt, nicht aber die Ehre sucht, die von dem einen Gott kommt?
45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; it is Moses who accuses you, on whom you set your hope.	45 Denkt nicht, dass ich euch beim Vater anklagen werde; Mose klagt euch an, auf den ihr eure Hoffnung gesetzt habt.
46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me.	46 Wenn ihr Mose glauben würdet, müsstet ihr auch mir glauben; denn über mich hat er geschrieben.
47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"	47 Wenn ihr aber seinen Schriften nicht glaubt, wie könnt ihr dann meinen Worten glauben?
