Sirach 22

Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition Biblia Tysiąclecia
The indolent may be compared to a filthy stone, and every one hisses at his disgrace.1 Leniwiec przyrównany będzie do obłoconego kamienia, a każdy zagwiżdże nad jego hańbą.
The indolent may be compared to the filth of dunghills; any one that picks it up will shake it off his hand.2 Leniwiec przyrównany będzie do krowiego nawozu, każdy, kto go podniesie, otrząśnie rękę.
It is a disgrace to be the father of an undisciplined son, and the birth of a daughter is a loss.3 Hańba dla ojca, jeśli ma syna źle wychowanego, a jeśli córkę, to wstyd mu ona przyniesie.
A sensible daughter obtains her husband, but one who acts shamefully brings grief to her father.4 Córka roztropna jest bogactwem dla swego męża, a córka, która wstyd przynosi, zgryzotą dla swego ojca.
An impudent daughter disgraces father and husband, and will be despised by both.5 Nieobyczajna córka zawstydza ojca i męża i przez obydwóch będzie wzgardzona.
Like music in mourning is a tale told at the wrong time, but chastising and discipline are wisdom at all times.6 Jak muzyka w czas smutku, tak nauka w niewłaściwym czasie, natomiast chłosta i upomnienie są zawsze mądre.
He who teaches a fool is like one who glues potsherds together, or who rouses a sleeper from deep slumber.
He who tells a story to a fool tells it to a drowsy man; and at the end he will say, "What is it?"
.9 Uczyć głupiego - to kleić skorupy lub budzić śpiącego z głębokiego snu.
.10 Nauczać głupiego - to jakby nauczać drzemiącego, który jeszcze w końcu zapyta: A o co chodzi?
Weep for the dead, for he lacks the light; and weep for the fool, for he lacks intelligence; weep less bitterly for the dead, for he has attained rest; but the life of the fool is worse than death.11 Płacz nad zmarłym, stracił bowiem światło, płacz nad głupim, bo rozum zgubił. Ciszej płacz nad zmarłym, bo znalazł odpoczynek, życie zaś głupiego gorsze jest od śmierci.
Mourning for the dead lasts seven days, but for a fool or an ungodly man it lasts all his life.12 Żałoba po zmarłym trwa siedem dni, po głupim i bezbożnym zaś przez wszystkie dni jego życia.
Do not talk much with a foolish man, and do not visit an unintelligent man; guard yourself from him to escape trouble, and you will not be soiled when he shakes himself off; avoid him and you will find rest, and you will never be wearied by his madness.13 Nie wdawaj się z głupim w długie rozmowy i nie chodź do tego, kto nie ma rozumu. Strzeż się go, byś nie miał przykrości i byś się nie splamił przez zetknięcie z nim. Unikaj go, a znajdziesz wytchnienie i nie doznasz rozgoryczenia z powodu jego nierozumu.
What is heavier than lead? And what is its name except "Fool"?14 Cóż jest cięższego nad ołów? a jak mu na imię? Głupi.
Sand, salt, and a piece of iron are easier to bear than a stupid man.15 Piasek, sól i bryłę żelaza łatwiej unieść, niż znieść człowieka nierozumnego.
A wooden beam firmly bonded into a building will not be torn loose by an earthquake; so the mind firmly fixed on a reasonable counsel will not be afraid in a crisis.16 Jak drewniana belka, wprawiona w budowę, nie rozpadnie się w czasie trzęsienia ziemi, tak serce umocnione dojrzałym zastanowieniem, gdy nadejdzie chwila, nie stchórzy.
A mind settled on an intelligent thought is like the stucco decoration on the wall of a colonnade.17 Serce wsparte na mądrym myśleniu jest jak ozdoba z piasku na murze wygładzonym.
Fences set on a high place will not stand firm against the wind; so a timid heart with a fool's purpose will not stand firm against any fear.18 Postawione na szczytach gór cienkie tyczki nie oprą się wiatrowi, tak serce zalęknione przez niemądre myśli nie ostoi się wobec byle jakiego strachu.
A man who pricks an eye will make tears fall, and one who pricks the heart makes it show feeling.19 Kto urazi oko, wyciska łzy, kto urazi serce, odkrywa uczucie.
One who throws a stone at birds scares them away, and one who reviles a friend will break off the friendship.20 Kto rzuca kamieniem na ptaki, wypłasza je, a kto lży przyjaciela, zrywa przyjaźń.
Even if you have drawn your sword against a friend, do not despair, for a renewal of friendship is possible.21 Jeślibyś wyciągnął miecz na przyjaciela, nie martw się, jest bowiem droga powrotu;
If you have opened your mouth against your friend, do not worry, for reconciliation is possible; but as for reviling, arrogance, disclosure of secrets, or a treacherous blow-- in these cases any friend will flee.22 jeślibyś otworzył usta na niego, nie martw się, jest bowiem możność pojednania; wyjąwszy obelgę, wzgardę, wyjawienie tajemnicy i cios zdradliwy - to wszystko oddali każdego przyjaciela.
Gain the trust of your neighbor in his poverty, that you may rejoice with him in his prosperity; stand by him in time of affliction, that you may share with him in his inheritance.23 Zachowaj wierność bliźniemu twemu w biedzie, abyś z nim razem wzbogacił się w jego pomyślności. W czasie niepowodzenia trwaj przy nim, abyś, gdy przyjdzie do dziedziczenia, i ty miał w nim udział.
The vapor and smoke of the furnace precede the fire; so insults precede bloodshed.24 Przed ogniem - para w piecu i dym, a przed wylaniem krwi - obelgi.
I will not be ashamed to protect a friend, and I will not hide from him;25 Nie będę się wstydził osłonić przyjaciela i nie będę się przed nim ukrywał;
but if some harm should happen to me because of him, whoever hears of it will beware of him.26 a jeśliby mnie nawet coś złego spotkało z jego przyczyny, to każdy, kto o tym usłyszy, strzec się jego będzie.
O that a guard were set over my mouth, and a seal of prudence upon my lips, that it may keep me from falling, so that my tongue may not destroy me!27 Któż postawi straż na moich ustach i położy na wargach pieczęć przemyślną, abym nie upadł przez nie, aby nie zgubił mnie mój język?
