1 Wisdom prospered their works by the hand of a holy prophet.	1 Diresse bene le loro imprese per mano di un santo profeta.
2 They journeyed through an uninhabited wilderness, and pitched their tents in untrodden places.	2 Traversaron deserti disabitati, e in luoghi impraticabili drizzaron le tende.
3 They withstood their enemies and fought off their foes.	3 Tennero testa ai nemici e fecer vendetta degli avversari.
4 When they thirsted they called upon thee, and water was given them out of flinty rock, and slaking of thirst from hard stone.	4 Assetati t‘invocarono, ed ebber acqua da una rupe scoscesa e ristoro alla sete da duro macigno.
5 For through the very things by which their enemies were punished, they themselves received benefit in their need.	5 Con ciò stesso con cui furon puniti i loro nemici, rimasti senza acque da bere, mentre godevano i figliuoli di Israele della loro abbondanza,
6 Instead of the fountain of an ever-flowing river, stirred up and defiled with blood	6 con ciò, essendo essi nel bisogno, furon beneficati.
7 in rebuke for the decree to slay the infants, thou gavest them abundant water unexpectedly,	7 Invece infatti d’una fonte di fiume perenne, umano sangue tu desti agl'ingiusti;
8 showing by their thirst at that time how thou didst punish their enemies.	8 e mentre soffrivan costoro in pena degli uccisi bambini, tu desti a quelli acqua abbondante contro ogni speranza;
9 For when they were tried, though they were being disciplined in mercy, they learned how the ungodly were tormented when judged in wrath.	9 mostrando, con la sete d'allora, come tu esaltavi i tuoi e punivi i loro avversari.
10 For thou didst test them as a father does in warning, but thou didst examine the ungodly as a stern king does in condemnation.	10 Durante tal prova, invero, benché castigati con misericordia, poterono intendere qual fosse stato il tormento degli empi, giudicati con ira.
11 Whether absent or present, they were equally distressed,	11 Gli uni tu provasti come un padre che ammonisce; gli altri, come un re severo che tortura, li condannasti.
12 for a twofold grief possessed them, and a groaning at the memory of what had occurred.	12 Assenti invero e presenti essi furono ugualmente tormentati.
13 For when they heard that through their own punishments the righteous had received benefit, they perceived it was the Lord's doing.	13 Perchè una doppia tristezza li colse, e un gemito al ricordo del passato.
14 For though they had mockingly rejected him who long before had been cast out and exposed, at the end of the events they marveled at him, for their thirst was not like that of the righteous.	14 Quando infatti appresero che dai loro tormenti traevan beneficio quegli [altri], riconobbero il Signore, meravigliati dell'esito degli avvenimenti.
15 In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts, which led them astray to worship irrational serpents and worthless animals, thou didst send upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them,	15 E colui che, esposto [già] barbaramente e buttato in [acqua], avevan schernito l'ammirarono alla fine degli eventi, quand’ebbero a soffrire una sete ben diversa da quella de' giusti.
16 that they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which he sins.	16 In pena poi degli Insipienti pensieri della loro iniquità, per cui ingannati adoravano rettili irragionevoli e vili bestie, mandasti loro una moltitudine di bruti animali per punirli,
17 For thy all-powerful hand, which created the world out of formless matter, did not lack the means to send upon them a multitude of bears, or bold lions,	17 perchè imparassero come son le cose stesse, con cui uno pecca, con quelle è tormentato.
18 or newly created unknown beasts full of rage, or such as breathe out fiery breath, or belch forth a thick pall of smoke, or flash terrible sparks from their eyes;	18 Non mancava modo, invero, alla onnipotente tua mano, che ha creato il mondo da informe materia, di mandar contro loro un branco di orsi o de' feroci leoni,
19 not only could their damage exterminate men, but the mere sight of them could kill by fright.	19 o sconosciute fiere dì nuova creazione, piene di furore, o spiranti alito infocato, o esalanti lezzo di fumo, o lanelanti dagli occhi tremende scintille,
20 Even apart from these, men could fall at a single breath when pursued by justice and scattered by the breath of thy power. But thou hast arranged all things by measure and number and weight.	20 e tali, che non solo il loro morso poteva stritolarli, ma la stessa vista farli morir di spavento.
21 For it is always in thy power to show great strength, and who can withstand the might of thy arm?	21 E anche senza di questo, potevan stramazzare per un soffio solo, perseguitati dalle lor proprie azioni, e dispersi dal soffio della tua potenza; ma tutto tu disponesti in misura, numero e peso.
22 Because the whole world before thee is like a speck that tips the scales, and like a drop of morning dew that falls upon the ground.	22 Perchè grandeggiar di potenza è sempre in tua mano, e alla forza del tuo braccio chi potrebbe resistere?
23 But thou art merciful to all, for thou canst do all things, and thou dost overlook men's sins, that they may repent.	23 Come un peso che fa traboccar la bilancia è il mondo tutto dinanzi a te, e come una stilla di rugiada mattutina caduta sulla terra!
24 For thou lovest all things that exist, and hast loathing for none of the things which thou hast made, for thou wouldst not have made anything if thou hadst hated it.	24 Ma di tutti tu hai compassione, [appunto] perchè tutto puoi: e dissimuli i peccati degli uomini in attesa di penitenza.
25 How would anything have endured if thou hadst not willed it? Or how would anything not called forth by thee have been preserved?	25 Ami invero gli esseri tutti, e nulla abomini di quanto hai fatto. Perchè, se avessi odiato una cosa, non l’avresti prodotta nè fatta.
26 Thou sparest all things, for they are thine, O Lord who lovest the living.	26 E come potrebbe sussistere alcunché se tu non l’avessi voluto? o conservarsi ciò che non fu da te chiamato [all’esistenza] ?
	27 Ma tutti gli esseri tu risparmi, perchè son tuoi, o Signore, amico de’ viventi.
