1 Wisdom prospered their works by the hand of a holy prophet.	1 Pela mão de um santo profeta aplanou suas dificuldades;
2 They journeyed through an uninhabited wilderness, and pitched their tents in untrodden places.	2 eles atravessaram um deserto inabitado, e levantaram suas tendas em lugares ermos;
3 They withstood their enemies and fought off their foes.	3 resistiram aos que os atacavam, e repeliram seus inimigos.
4 When they thirsted they called upon thee, and water was given them out of flinty rock, and slaking of thirst from hard stone.	4 Tiveram sede e clamaram a vós: do rochedo abrupto a água lhes foi dada, e da pedra seca estancaram sua sede.
5 For through the very things by which their enemies were punished, they themselves received benefit in their need.	5 Porque os elementos que tinham servido para punir seus inimigos, foram-lhes dados, na sua necessidade, como benefício:
6 Instead of the fountain of an ever-flowing river, stirred up and defiled with blood	6 em lugar das ondas de um rio perene turvadas por uma lama de sangue,
7 in rebuke for the decree to slay the infants, thou gavest them abundant water unexpectedly,	7 pela punição do decreto que consagrava crianças à morte, vós lhes destes, de maneira inesperada, água em abundância,
8 showing by their thirst at that time how thou didst punish their enemies.	8 mostrando-lhes, pela sede que então sofreram, como punistes seus inimigos.
9 For when they were tried, though they were being disciplined in mercy, they learned how the ungodly were tormented when judged in wrath.	9 Por isso, tratados com piedade na sua provação, reconheceram quanto deviam ter sofrido os ímpios, julgados com ira.
10 For thou didst test them as a father does in warning, but thou didst examine the ungodly as a stern king does in condemnation.	10 A estes provastes como um pai que corrige, mas a outros provastes como um rei severo que condena.
11 Whether absent or present, they were equally distressed,	11 Tanto estando longe como perto, a dor os consumiu da mesma forma,
12 for a twofold grief possessed them, and a groaning at the memory of what had occurred.	12 porque tiveram um segundo para se entristecer e gemer à lembrança dos males passados.
13 For when they heard that through their own punishments the righteous had received benefit, they perceived it was the Lord's doing.	13 Compreendendo, com efeito, que o que era para eles castigo, era para outros ocasião de benefício, sentiram a mão do Senhor;
14 For though they had mockingly rejected him who long before had been cast out and exposed, at the end of the events they marveled at him, for their thirst was not like that of the righteous.	14 e aquele que, outrora exposto e abandonado, tinham repelido com zombaria, admiraram-no finalmente, porque sofreram uma sede diferente da sede do justo.
15 In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts, which led them astray to worship irrational serpents and worthless animals, thou didst send upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them,	15 Por outro lado, para os punir dos loucos pensamentos de sua perversidade, que os faziam extraviar-se na adoração de répteis irracionais e de vis animais, enviastes contra eles uma multidão de animais estúpidos,
16 that they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which he sins.	16 a fim de que compreendessem que por onde cada um peca, será punido.
17 For thy all-powerful hand, which created the world out of formless matter, did not lack the means to send upon them a multitude of bears, or bold lions,	17 Não era difícil à vossa mão todo-poderosa, que formou o mundo de matéria informe, mandar contra eles bandos de ursos e de leões ferozes,
18 or newly created unknown beasts full of rage, or such as breathe out fiery breath, or belch forth a thick pall of smoke, or flash terrible sparks from their eyes;	18 ou animais desconhecidos e duma nova espécie, cheios de furor, exalando um hálito inflamado, ou espalhando um fumo infecto, ou lançando de seus olhos faíscas terríveis,
19 not only could their damage exterminate men, but the mere sight of them could kill by fright.	19 capazes não só de os exterminar com seus golpes, mas ainda de os matar de terror só pelo seu aspecto.
20 Even apart from these, men could fall at a single breath when pursued by justice and scattered by the breath of thy power. But thou hast arranged all things by measure and number and weight.	20 E, mesmo sem isso, eles poderiam perecer por um sopro, perseguidos pela justiça e arrebatados pelo vento de vosso poder; mas, dispusestes tudo com medida, quantidade e peso,
21 For it is always in thy power to show great strength, and who can withstand the might of thy arm?	21 porque sempre vos é possível mostrar vosso poder imenso, e quem poderá resistir à força de vosso braço?
22 Because the whole world before thee is like a speck that tips the scales, and like a drop of morning dew that falls upon the ground.	22 Diante de vós o mundo inteiro é como um nada, que faz pender a balança, ou como uma gota de orvalho, que desce de madrugada sobre a terra.
23 But thou art merciful to all, for thou canst do all things, and thou dost overlook men's sins, that they may repent.	23 Tendes compaixão de todos, porque vós podeis tudo; e para que se arrependam, fechais os olhos aos pecados dos homens.
24 For thou lovest all things that exist, and hast loathing for none of the things which thou hast made, for thou wouldst not have made anything if thou hadst hated it.	24 Porque amais tudo que existe, e não odiais nada do que fizestes, porquanto, se o odiásseis, não o teríeis feito de modo algum.
25 How would anything have endured if thou hadst not willed it? Or how would anything not called forth by thee have been preserved?	25 Como poderia subsistir qualquer coisa, se não o tivésseis querido, e conservar a existência, se por vós não tivesse sido chamada?
26 Thou sparest all things, for they are thine, O Lord who lovest the living.	26 Mas poupais todos os seres, porque todos são vossos, ó Senhor, que amais a vida.
