After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.1 Después de esto, el rey Asuero elevó de categoría a Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, agaguita: le otorgó un rango superior al de los demás dignatarios.
And all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and did obeisance to Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him.
Then the king's servants who were at the king's gate said to Mordecai, "Why do you transgress the king's command?"3 Los servidores de palacio le preguntaban: «¿Por qué no obedeces la orden del rey?».
And when they spoke to him day after day and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai's words would avail; for he had told them that he was a Jew.4 Día tras día le repetían la pregunta, pero Mardoqueo no se daba por enterado.
And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or do obeisance to him, Haman was filled with fury.5 Cuando Amán comprobó que Mardoqueo no se arrodillaba ante él, montó en cólera.
But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.6 Como le dijeron a qué raza pertenecía Mardoqueo, no se contentó con castigarle a él, sino que se propuso exterminar, junto con él, a todos los judíos residentes en el reino de Asuero.
In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is the lot, before Haman day after day; and they cast it month after month till the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.7 El año duodécimo del reinado de Asuero, el mes primero, que es el mes de nisán, se efectuó en presencia de Amán el sorteo denominado pur para determinar el mes y el día en que el pueblo judío debía ser aniquilado.
Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king's laws, so that it is not for the king's profit to tolerate them.8 Amán dijo al rey Asuero: «Hay un pueblo, disperso entre las gentes de todas las provincias de tu reino, que se mantiene apartado. Tiene leyes particulares y no cumple los decretos del rey. El rey no debe tolerarlo.
If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king's business, that they may put it into the king's treasuries."9 Si tu majestad estima oportuno decretar su destrucción, yo entregaré trescientos cincuenta mil kilos de plata con destino al tesoro real».
So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews.10 Entonces el rey se quitó de la mano el anillo del sello y, entregándoselo a Amán, hijo de Hamdatá, agaguita y enemigo de los judíos,
And the king said to Haman, "The money is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you."11 le dijo: «Quédate con el dinero; y con ese pueblo haz lo que quieras».
Then the king's secretaries were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king's satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the princes of all the peoples, to every province in its own script and every people in its own language; it was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's ring.12 El día trece del mes primero fueron convocados los escribanos del rey para que redactaran, de acuerdo con las instrucciones de Amán, un documento destinado a los sátrapas del rey, a los gobernadores de cada una de las provincias y a los jefes de cada pueblo, a cada provincia en su escritura y a cada pueblo en su lengua.
Letters were sent by couriers to all the king's provinces, to destroy, to slay, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.13 Así, esos enemigos de ayer y de hoy descenderán al sepulcro en un mismo día, y nosotros podremos gozar en el futuro de paz y estabilidad».
A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province by proclamation to all the peoples to be ready for that day.14 Una copia del edicto que debía ser promulgado en cada provincia fue divulgada entre los pueblos con el fin de que se preparasen para aquel día.
The couriers went in haste by order of the king, and the decree was issued in Susa the capital. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Susa was perplexed.15 Por orden del rey, los mensajeros partieron a toda prisa.
