1 Most beloved, do not be willing to believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are of God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.1 Geliebte, traut nicht jedem Geist, sondern prüft die Geister, ob sie aus Gott sind; denn viele falsche Propheten sind ausgezogen in die Welt.
2 The Spirit of God may be known in this way. Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh is of God;2 Daran erkennt ihr den Geist Gottes: Jeder Geist, der bekennt, daß Jesus Christus im Fleische gekommen ist, ist aus Gott,
3 and every spirit who contradicts Jesus is not of God. And this one is the Antichrist, the one that you have heard is coming, and even now he is in the world.3 und jeder Geist, der Jesus nicht bekennt, ist nicht aus Gott. Und das ist der Geist des Antichrist, von dem ihr gehört habt, daß er kommt; und nun ist er schon in der Welt.
4 Little sons, you are of God, and so you have overcome him. For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.4 Ihr seid aus Gott, Kindlein, und habt jene besiegt; denn der in euch ist mächtiger als der in der Welt.
5 They are of the world. Therefore, they speak about the world, and the world listens to them.5 Sie sind aus der Welt; darum reden sie aus der Welt, und die Welt hört auf sie.
6 We are of God. Whoever knows God, listens to us. Whoever is not of God, does not listen to us. In this way, we know the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error.6 Wir sind aus Gott; wer Gott erkennt, hört auf uns, wer nicht aus Gott ist, hört nicht auf uns. Daran erkennen wir den Geist der Wahrheit und den Geist der Verführung.
7 Most beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God. And everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.7 Geliebte, laßt uns einander lieben; denn die Liebe ist aus Gott, und jeder, der liebt, ist aus Gott geboren und erkennt Gott.
8 Whoever does not love, does not know God. For God is love.8 Wer nicht liebt, hat Gott nicht erkannt; denn Gott ist Liebe.
9 The love of God was made apparent to us in this way: that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, so that we might live through him.9 Darin wurde die Liebe Gottes an uns sichtbar, daß Gott seinen eingeborenen Sohn in die Welt sandte, damit wir leben durch ihn.
10 In this is love: not as if we had loved God, but that he first loved us, and so he sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins.10 Darin besteht diese Liebe: nicht daß wir Gott liebten, sondern daß er uns liebte und seinen Sohn sandte zur Sühne für unsere Sünden.
11 Most beloved, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another.11 Geliebte, wenn Gott uns so liebte, müssen auch wir einander lieben.
12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us.12 Niemand hat Gott je gesehen; wenn wir einander lieben, bleibt Gott in uns, und seine Liebe ist vollkommen in uns.
13 In this way, we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he has given to us from his Spirit.13 Daran erkennen wir, daß wir in ihm bleiben und er in uns, daß er uns von seinem Geist gegeben hat.
14 And we have seen, and we testify, that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.14 Und wir haben geschaut und bezeugen, daß der Vater den Sohn gesandt hat als Heiland der Welt.
15 Whoever has confessed that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.15 Wer bekennt, daß Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist, in dem bleibt Gott und er in Gott.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love. And he who abides in love, abides in God, and God in him.16 Und wir erkannten und glaubten die Liebe, die Gott an uns erweist. Gott ist Liebe, und wer in der Liebe bleibt, der bleibt in Gott, und Gott bleibt in ihm.
17 In this way, the love of God is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment. For as he is, so also are we, in this world.17 Darin hat die Liebe [Gottes] bei uns die Vollendung erreicht, daß wir Zuversicht haben am Tag des Gerichtes, daß so, wie jener ist, auch wir sind in dieser Welt.
18 Fear is not in love. Instead, perfect love casts out fear, for fear pertains to punishment. And whoever fears is not perfected in love.18 Furcht ist nicht in der Liebe, sondern die vollkommene Liebe treibt die Furcht hinaus. Die Furcht ist ja auf Bestrafung gerichtet; der aber in Furcht lebt, ist nicht vollkommen in der Liebe.
19 Therefore, let us love God, for God first loved us.19 Wir lieben, weil er uns zuvor geliebt hat.
20 If anyone says that he loves God, but hates his brother, then he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother, whom he does see, in what way can he love God, whom he does not see?20 Wenn einer sagt: "Ich liebe Gott", jedoch seinen Bruder haßt, der ist ein Lügner. Denn wer seinen Bruder nicht liebt, den er sah, der kann Gott nicht lieben, den er nicht sah.
21 And this is the commandment that we have from God, that he who loves God must also love his brother.21 Und dieses Gebot haben wir von ihm: Wer Gott liebt, der liebe auch seinen Bruder.
