1 Most beloved, do not be willing to believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are of God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.	1 Liebe Brüder, traut nicht jedem Geist, sondern prüft die Geister, ob sie aus Gott sind; denn viele falsche Propheten sind in die Welt hinausgezogen.
2 The Spirit of God may be known in this way. Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh is of God;	2 Daran erkennt ihr den Geist Gottes: Jeder Geist, der bekennt, Jesus Christus sei im Fleisch gekommen, ist aus Gott.
3 and every spirit who contradicts Jesus is not of God. And this one is the Antichrist, the one that you have heard is coming, and even now he is in the world.	3 Und jeder Geist, der Jesus nicht bekennt, ist nicht aus Gott. Das ist der Geist des Antichrists, über den ihr gehört habt, dass er kommt. Jetzt ist er schon in der Welt.
4 Little sons, you are of God, and so you have overcome him. For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.	4 Ihr aber, meine Kinder, seid aus Gott und habt sie besiegt; denn Er, der in euch ist, ist größer als jener, der in der Welt ist.
5 They are of the world. Therefore, they speak about the world, and the world listens to them.	5 Sie sind aus der Welt; deshalb sprechen sie, wie die Welt spricht, und die Welt hört auf sie.
6 We are of God. Whoever knows God, listens to us. Whoever is not of God, does not listen to us. In this way, we know the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error.	6 Wir aber sind aus Gott. Wer Gott erkennt, hört auf uns; wer nicht aus Gott ist, hört nicht auf uns. Daran erkennen wir den Geist der Wahrheit und den Geist des Irrtums.
7 Most beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God. And everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.	7 Liebe Brüder, wir wollen einander lieben; denn die Liebe ist aus Gott und jeder, der liebt, stammt von Gott und erkennt Gott.
8 Whoever does not love, does not know God. For God is love.	8 Wer nicht liebt, hat Gott nicht erkannt; denn Gott ist die Liebe.
9 The love of God was made apparent to us in this way: that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, so that we might live through him.	9 Die Liebe Gottes wurde unter uns dadurch offenbart, dass Gott seinen einzigen Sohn in die Welt gesandt hat, damit wir durch ihn leben.
10 In this is love: not as if we had loved God, but that he first loved us, and so he sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins.	10 Nicht darin besteht die Liebe, dass wir Gott geliebt haben, sondern dass er uns geliebt und seinen Sohn als Sühne für unsere Sünden gesandt hat.
11 Most beloved, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another.	11 Liebe Brüder, wenn Gott uns so geliebt hat, müssen auch wir einander lieben.
12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us.	12 Niemand hat Gott je geschaut; wenn wir einander lieben, bleibt Gott in uns und seine Liebe ist in uns vollendet.
13 In this way, we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he has given to us from his Spirit.	13 Daran erkennen wir, dass wir in ihm bleiben und er in uns bleibt: Er hat uns von seinem Geist gegeben.
14 And we have seen, and we testify, that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.	14 Wir haben gesehen und bezeugen, dass der Vater den Sohn gesandt hat als den Retter der Welt.
15 Whoever has confessed that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.	15 Wer bekennt, dass Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist, in dem bleibt Gott und er bleibt in Gott.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love. And he who abides in love, abides in God, and God in him.	16 aWir haben die Liebe, die Gott zu uns hat, erkannt und gläubig angenommen. Gott ist die Liebe, und wer in der Liebe bleibt, bleibt in Gott und Gott bleibt in ihm.
17 In this way, the love of God is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment. For as he is, so also are we, in this world.	17 Darin ist unter uns die Liebe vollendet, dass wir am Tag des Gerichts Zuversicht haben. Denn wie er, so sind auch wir in dieser Welt.
18 Fear is not in love. Instead, perfect love casts out fear, for fear pertains to punishment. And whoever fears is not perfected in love.	18 Furcht gibt es in der Liebe nicht, sondern die vollkommene Liebe vertreibt die Furcht. Denn die Furcht rechnet mit Strafe(,) und wer sich fürchtet, dessen Liebe ist nicht vollendet.
19 Therefore, let us love God, for God first loved us.	19 Wir wollen lieben, weil er uns zuerst geliebt hat.
20 If anyone says that he loves God, but hates his brother, then he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother, whom he does see, in what way can he love God, whom he does not see?	20 Wenn jemand sagt: Ich liebe Gott!, aber seinen Bruder hasst, ist er ein Lügner. Denn wer seinen Bruder nicht liebt, den er sieht, kann Gott nicht lieben, den er nicht sieht.
21 And this is the commandment that we have from God, that he who loves God must also love his brother.	21 Und dieses Gebot haben wir von ihm: Wer Gott liebt, soll auch seinen Bruder lieben.
