In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 En aquel tiempo, oyó el tetrarca Herodes lo que se contaba de Jesús
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 y dijo a sus cortesanos: «Ese es Juan el Bautista, que ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso las fuerzas milagrosas actúan en él».
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Es que Herodes había mandado prender a Juan y lo había metido en la cárcel encadenado, por motivo de Herodías, mujer de su hermano Filipo;
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 porque Juan le decía que no le era lícito vivir con ella.
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 Quería mandarlo matar, pero tuvo miedo de la gente, que lo tenía por profeta.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 El día del cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías danzó delante de todos y le gustó tanto a Herodes,
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 que juró darle lo que pidiera.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Ella, instigada por su madre, le dijo: «Dame ahora mismo en una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 El rey lo sintió, pero, por el juramento y los invitados, ordenó que se la dieran,
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 y mandó decapitar a Juan en la cárcel.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 Trajeron la cabeza en una bandeja, se la entregaron a la joven y ella se la llevó a su madre.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 Sus discípulos recogieron el cadáver, lo enterraron, y fueron a contárselo a Jesús.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 Al enterarse Jesús se marchó de allí en barca, a solas, a un lugar desierto. Cuando la gente lo supo, lo siguió por tierra desde los poblados.
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 Al desembarcar vio Jesús una multitud, se compadeció de ella y curó a los enfermos.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Como se hizo tarde, se acercaron los discípulos a decirle: «Estamos en despoblado y es muy tarde, despide a la multitud para que vayan a las aldeas y se compren comida».
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Jesús les replicó: «No hace falta que vayan, dadles vosotros de comer».
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Ellos le replicaron: «Si aquí no tenemos más que cinco panes y dos peces».
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 Les dijo: «Traédmelos».
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 Mandó a la gente que se recostara en la hierba y tomando los cinco panes y los dos peces, alzando la mirada al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes y se los dio a los discípulos; los discípulos se los dieron a la gente.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 Comieron todos y se saciaron y recogieron doce cestos llenos de sobras.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Comieron unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar mujeres y niños.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Enseguida Jesús apremió a sus discípulos a que subieran a la barca y se le adelantaran a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía a la gente.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 Y después de despedir a la gente subió al monte a solas para orar. Llegada la noche estaba allí solo.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Mientras tanto la barca iba ya muy lejos de tierra, sacudida por las olas, porque el viento era contrario.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 A la cuarta vela de la noche se les acercó Jesús andando sobre el mar.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 Los discípulos, viéndole andar sobre el agua, se asustaron y gritaron de miedo, diciendo que era un fantasma.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 Jesús les dijo enseguida: «¡Ánimo, soy yo, no tengáis miedo!».
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Pedro le contestó: «Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a ti sobre el agua».
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Él le dijo: «Ven». Pedro bajó de la barca y echó a andar sobre el agua acercándose a Jesús;
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 pero, al sentir la fuerza del viento, le entró miedo, empezó a hundirse y gritó: «Señor, sálvame».
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 Enseguida Jesús extendió la mano, lo agarró y le dijo: «¡Hombre de poca fe! ¿Por qué has dudado?».
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 En cuanto subieron a la barca amainó el viento.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 Los de la barca se postraron ante él diciendo: «Realmente eres Hijo de Dios».
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 Y los hombres de aquel lugar apenas lo reconocieron, pregonaron la noticia por toda aquella comarca y le trajeron a todos los enfermos.
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 Le pedían tocar siquiera la orla de su manto. Y cuantos la tocaban quedaban curados.
