In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 - In quel tempo Erode il Tetrarca, avendo udito la fama di Gesù,
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 disse a' suoi cortigiani: «Costui è Giovanni Battista, risuscitato dai morti; per questo si fanno miracoli per mezzo suo».
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Poichè Erode, avendo fatto arrestare Giovanni, l'aveva chiuso in prigione, a causa d'Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo;
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 perchè Giovanni gli diceva: «Non ti è permesso di tenerla con te».
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 Ora, pur desiderando di farlo morire, temeva il popolo che lo riguardava come un profeta.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 Ma nel giorno natalizio di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade, ballò nel convito e piacque tanto a Erode,
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 ch'egli promise con giuramento di darle qualunque cosa gli avesse domandato.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Ed ella, istruita prima da sua madre: «Dammi qui», gli disse «sopra un piatto la testa di Giovanni Battista».
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 Il re ne fu contristato, ma a motivo del giuramento e dei convitati, comandò che le fosse data,
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 e fece decapitare Giovanni nella prigione.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 La testa di lui, portata sopra un piatto, venne data alla fanciulla.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 I discepoli di Giovanni vennero a prenderne il corpo e lo seppellirono; poi corsero a riferire il fatto a Gesù.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 Gesù, udite queste cose, se ne andò in barca e si ritirò in un luogo deserto e appartato; ma le turbe, saputolo, gli tennero dietro, a piedi, dalle città.
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 Sceso poi dalla barca, vide una gran folla, e n'ebbe compassione e guarì i loro infermi.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Sul far della sera, i suoi discepoli gli s'accostarono dicendo: «Il luogo è deserto e l'ora è tarda; licenzia dunque le turbe affinchè vadano per i villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Ma Gesù rispose loro: «Non c'è bisogno che se ne vadano; date voi da mangiare a loro».
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Essi osservarono: «Noi abbiam soltanto cinque pani e due pesci».
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 «Portatemeli qua», disse loro.
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 E dopo aver comandato alle turbe di accomodarsi sull'erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e alzati gli occhi al cielo, benedisse e spezzando i pani li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alle turbe.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 Tutti mangiarono e si satollarono; e si portaron via dodici ceste piene colme dei frammenti avanzati.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Ora quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini senza contare le donne e i fanciulli.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Subito dopo Gesù invitò i suoi discepoli a salire in barca e a precederlo sull'altra riva, mentr'egli congedava le turbe.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 Dopo averle congedate, salì in disparte sul monte a pregare. E venuta la sera, si trovò tutto solo.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Frattanto la barca, in mezzo al mare, era sbattuta dai flutti essendo il vento contrario.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 Ma alla quarta vigilia della notte, Gesù andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «È un fantasma». E gridaron dalla paura.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 Ma subito Gesù rivolgendosi a loro, disse: «Coraggio, sono io; non temete».
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Pietro rispose: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sulle acque».
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Ed egli disse: «Vieni». E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sulle acque per andare da Gesù.
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 Ma, vedendo la violenza del vento, s'impaurì e poichè cominciava a sommergersi gridò: «Signore, salvami!».
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 Gesù stendendogli subito la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perchè hai dubitato?».
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 E quando furon montati sulla barca, il vento cessò.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 Allora quelli che eran nella barca l'adorarono dicendo: «Tu sei veramente il Figliuolo di Dio».
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 Attraversato il lago, approdarono nella terra di Genezaret.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 La gente del luogo, riconosciutolo, mandarono ad avvisare tutto il paese all'intorno; e vennero a presentargli tutti gl'infermi
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 e lo pregavano di lasciar loro toccare almeno l'orlo della sua veste; e quanti lo toccavano, guarivano.
