NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'One of these days,' David thought, 'I shal perish at the hand of Saul. The best thing that I can do is toget away into the country of the Philistines; then Saul will give up tracking me through the length and breadth ofIsrael and I shal be safe from him.'	1 Davide pensò dentro di sé: "Certo un giorno o l'altro perirò per la mano di Saul. Non v'è di meglio per me che mettermi in salvo nella terra dei Filistei; Saul desisterà dal cercarmi ancora in tutti i confini di Israele e mi salverò".
2 So David set off and went over, he and his six hundred men, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 Davide si mosse e passò, con i seicento uomini che erano con lui, da Achis, figlio di Maoch, re di Gat.
3 He settled at Gath with Achish, he and his men, each with his family and David with his two wives,Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	3 Davide dimorò presso Achis a Gat, lui e i suoi uomini, ognuno con la propria famiglia. Davide e le sue due mogli, Achinoàm di Izreèl e Abigail già moglie di Nabal.
4 When news reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, he stopped searching for him.	4 Quando fu riferito a Saul che Davide si era rifugiato a Gat, egli non continuò più a dargli la caccia.
5 David said to Achish, 'If I have won your favour, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns,where I can live. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?'	5 Davide disse ad Achis: "Ti prego, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, mi si dia un luogo in una delle città della steppa ove possa abitare. Perché il tuo servo deve abitare nella città reale insieme con te?".
6 That very day Achish gave him Ziklag; and this is why Ziklag has been the property of the kings ofJudah to the present day.	6 In quel giorno Achis gli consegnò Ziklàg: per questo Ziklàg appartiene ai re di Giuda fino ad oggi.
7 The time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.	7 Il numero dei giorni in cui Davide rimase nelle steppe dei Filistei fu di un anno e quattro mesi.
8 David and his men went out on raids against the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, for these arethe tribes inhabiting the region which, from Telam, goes in the direction of Shur, as far as Egypt.	8 Davide partiva con i suoi uomini a fare razzie presso i Ghesuriti, i Ghirziti e gli Amaleciti: essi abitavano la regione che va da Telam verso Sur, fino alla terra d'Egitto.
9 David laid the countryside waste and left neither man nor woman alive; he carried off the sheep andcattle, the donkeys, camels and clothing, and then came back again to Achish.	9 Davide devastava la regione e non lasciava vivo né uomo né donna, mentre catturava greggi e armenti, asini e cammelli e indumenti; al ritorno andava da Achis.
10 Achish would ask, 'Where did you go raiding today?' David would reply, 'Against the Negeb ofJudah,' or 'the Negeb of Jerahmeel,' or 'the Negeb of the Kenites.'	10 Achis domandava: "Dove avete fatto razzie oggi?". Davide rispondeva: "Contro il Negheb di Giuda, contro il Negheb degli Ieracmeeliti, contro il Negheb dei Keniti".
11 David spared neither man nor woman to bring back alive to Gath, 'in case', as he thought, 'theyinform on us and say, "David did such and such." ' This was the way David conducted his raids al the time hestayed in Philistine territory.	11 Davide non lasciava vivo né uomo né donna da riportare a Gat, pensando: "Affinché non diano notizie a nostro riguardo, dicendo: "Così ha fatto Davide!". Tale fu la sua condotta tutti i giorni in cui rimase nella steppa dei Filistei.
12 Achish trusted David. 'He has made himself detested by his own people Israel,' he thought, 'and sowil be my servant for ever.'	12 Achis ebbe fiducia in Davide pensando: "Certamente è diventato odioso al suo popolo Israele e sarà per sempre mio servo!".
