1 'One of these days,' David thought, 'I shal perish at the hand of Saul. The best thing that I can do is toget away into the country of the Philistines; then Saul will give up tracking me through the length and breadth ofIsrael and I shal be safe from him.'	1 Ma David diceva in cuor suo: Io cadrò o prima, o dopo nelle mani di Saul: non è egli meglio ch'io fugga, e mi salvi nel paese dei Filistei, affinchè Saul perduta ogni speranza, finisca di andar cercandomi per tutto il paese d'Israele? fuggirò adunque dalle sue mani.
2 So David set off and went over, he and his six hundred men, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 E David si mosse, e coi secento uomini, che eran seco, andò a trovare Achis figliuolo di Maoch, re di Geth.
3 He settled at Gath with Achish, he and his men, each with his family and David with his two wives,Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	3 E David fece sua dimora con Achis in Geth, egli, e la sua gente, ciascuno colla sua famiglia, ed erano con David le sue due mogli. Achinoam di Jezrael, e Abigail vedova di Nabal del Carmelo.
4 When news reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, he stopped searching for him.	4 E Saul riseppe, come David era fuggito in Geth, e non si mosse più per cercarlo.
5 David said to Achish, 'If I have won your favour, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns,where I can live. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?'	5 Ma David disse ad Achis: Se io ho trovata grazia negli occhi tuoi, siami dato luogo in una delle città di questa regione per abitarvi: imperocché a qual fine starà teco il tuo servo nella città del re?
6 That very day Achish gave him Ziklag; and this is why Ziklag has been the property of the kings ofJudah to the present day.	6 Achis pertanto gli assegnò subito Siceleg, e in questo modo Siceleg diventò città de' regi di Giuda, com'è anche adesso.
7 The time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.	7 E il tempo che David passò nel paese de' Filistei fu di quattro mesi.
8 David and his men went out on raids against the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, for these arethe tribes inhabiting the region which, from Telam, goes in the direction of Shur, as far as Egypt.	8 E David si mosse colla sua gente,e mettevano saccomanno Gessuri, e Gerzi e gli Amaleciti: perocché quei borghi in quel paese erano abitati anticamente sulla strada di Sur sino al paese di Egitto.
9 David laid the countryside waste and left neither man nor woman alive; he carried off the sheep andcattle, the donkeys, camels and clothing, and then came back again to Achish.	9 E David desolava tutto quel paese, e non vi lasciava vivo nè uomo, nè donna: e prendendo le pecore, e i bovi, e gli asini, e i cammelli, e le suppellettili, se ne tornava a trovare Achis.
10 Achish would ask, 'Where did you go raiding today?' David would reply, 'Against the Negeb ofJudah,' or 'the Negeb of Jerahmeel,' or 'the Negeb of the Kenites.'	10 E Achis diceagli: In qual parte hai tu oggi portata la guerra? Rispondea David: Verso la parte meridionale di Giuda, verso la parte meridionale di Jerameel, e verso la parte meridionale di Ceni.
11 David spared neither man nor woman to bring back alive to Gath, 'in case', as he thought, 'theyinform on us and say, "David did such and such." ' This was the way David conducted his raids al the time hestayed in Philistine territory.	11 David non lasciava la vita a nissun uomo, o donna, nè alcuno ne conduceva Geth, dicendo: Potrebbero parlare contro di noi. Così fece David; e questo fu il suo costume per tutto il tempo che abitò nel paese de' Filistei.
12 Achish trusted David. 'He has made himself detested by his own people Israel,' he thought, 'and sowil be my servant for ever.'	12 Per la qual cosa Achis avea fidanza in Davidde, e diceva: Egli ha fatto gran male al suo popolo d'Israele: ei sarà dunque per sempre mio servo.
