1 'One of these days,' David thought, 'I shal perish at the hand of Saul. The best thing that I can do is toget away into the country of the Philistines; then Saul will give up tracking me through the length and breadth ofIsrael and I shal be safe from him.'	1 David se dit en lui-même: “Un jour ou l’autre Saül va me tuer. Il vaut mieux que je me réfugie chez les Philistins: Saül cessera de me rechercher dans tout le pays d’Israël et j’échapperai à sa main.”
2 So David set off and went over, he and his six hundred men, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 David passa donc avec ses 600 hommes chez le roi de Gat, Akich fils de Maok.
3 He settled at Gath with Achish, he and his men, each with his family and David with his two wives,Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	3 David s’installa avec ses hommes auprès d’Akich, à Gat. Chacun était venu avec sa famille, David avec ses deux femmes: Ahinoam de Yizréel et Abigayil, femme de Nabal de Karmel.
4 When news reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, he stopped searching for him.	4 On fit savoir à Saül que David s’était enfui à Gat, et Saül cessa de le rechercher.
5 David said to Achish, 'If I have won your favour, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns,where I can live. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?'	5 David dit à Akich: “Si vraiment j’ai conquis ton amitié, donne-moi une place dans l’une des villes des environs et je m’y installerai. Il n’y a aucune raison pour que j’habite à côté de toi dans la capitale.”
6 That very day Achish gave him Ziklag; and this is why Ziklag has been the property of the kings ofJudah to the present day.	6 Akich ce jour-là lui donna Siklag et depuis ce jour, Siklag appartient aux rois de Juda.
7 The time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.	7 David resta en territoire philistin pendant un an et quatre mois.
8 David and his men went out on raids against the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, for these arethe tribes inhabiting the region which, from Telam, goes in the direction of Shur, as far as Egypt.	8 David et ses hommes partirent en expédition contre les Guéchourites, les Girzites et les Amalécites: ces tribus occupent la région qui s’étend de Télam en direction de Chour et de l’Égypte.
9 David laid the countryside waste and left neither man nor woman alive; he carried off the sheep andcattle, the donkeys, camels and clothing, and then came back again to Achish.	9 David ravageait la contrée; il ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme, il enlevait les brebis, les bœufs, les ânes, les chameaux et tous les vêtements; ensuite il revenait chez Akich.
10 Achish would ask, 'Where did you go raiding today?' David would reply, 'Against the Negeb ofJudah,' or 'the Negeb of Jerahmeel,' or 'the Negeb of the Kenites.'	10 Akich lui disait: “Où avez-vous fait une expédition aujourd’hui?” Et David répondait: “Dans le Négueb de Juda”, ou: “Dans le Négueb de Yérahméel”, ou: “Dans le Négueb des Kénites.”
11 David spared neither man nor woman to bring back alive to Gath, 'in case', as he thought, 'theyinform on us and say, "David did such and such." ' This was the way David conducted his raids al the time hestayed in Philistine territory.	11 David ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme, il ne voulait pas ramener à Gat quelqu’un qui aurait pu lui faire du tort et dire: “Voici ce qu’a fait David.” Telle fut la façon d’agir de David tout le temps où il séjourna chez les Philistins.
12 Achish trusted David. 'He has made himself detested by his own people Israel,' he thought, 'and sowil be my servant for ever.'	12 Mais Akich faisait confiance à David, il se disait même: “Les Israélites, les gens de son peuple, ne peuvent sûrement plus le sentir, il restera donc pour toujours à mon service.”
