1 'One of these days,' David thought, 'I shal perish at the hand of Saul. The best thing that I can do is toget away into the country of the Philistines; then Saul will give up tracking me through the length and breadth ofIsrael and I shal be safe from him.'	1 ויאמר דוד אל לבו עתה אספה יום אחד ביד שאול אין לי טוב כי המלט אמלט אל ארץ פלשתים ונואש ממני שאול לבקשני עוד בכל גבול ישראל ונמלטתי מידו
2 So David set off and went over, he and his six hundred men, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 ויקם דוד ויעבר הוא ושש מאות איש אשר עמו אל אכיש בן מעוך מלך גת
3 He settled at Gath with Achish, he and his men, each with his family and David with his two wives,Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.	3 וישב דוד עם אכיש בגת הוא ואנשיו איש וביתו דוד ושתי נשיו אחינעם היזרעאלית ואביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלית
4 When news reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, he stopped searching for him.	4 ויגד לשאול כי ברח דוד גת ולא יוסף עוד לבקשו
5 David said to Achish, 'If I have won your favour, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns,where I can live. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?'	5 ויאמר דוד אל אכיש אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך יתנו לי מקום באחת ערי השדה ואשבה שם ולמה ישב עבדך בעיר הממלכה עמך
6 That very day Achish gave him Ziklag; and this is why Ziklag has been the property of the kings ofJudah to the present day.	6 ויתן לו אכיש ביום ההוא את צקלג לכן היתה צקלג למלכי יהודה עד היום הזה
7 The time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.	7 ויהי מספר הימים אשר ישב דוד בשדה פלשתים ימים וארבעה חדשים
8 David and his men went out on raids against the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, for these arethe tribes inhabiting the region which, from Telam, goes in the direction of Shur, as far as Egypt.	8 ויעל דוד ואנשיו ויפשטו אל הגשורי והגרזי והעמלקי כי הנה ישבות הארץ אשר מעולם בואך שורה ועד ארץ מצרים
9 David laid the countryside waste and left neither man nor woman alive; he carried off the sheep andcattle, the donkeys, camels and clothing, and then came back again to Achish.	9 והכה דוד את הארץ ולא יחיה איש ואשה ולקח צאן ובקר וחמרים וגמלים ובגדים וישב ויבא אל אכיש
10 Achish would ask, 'Where did you go raiding today?' David would reply, 'Against the Negeb ofJudah,' or 'the Negeb of Jerahmeel,' or 'the Negeb of the Kenites.'	10 ויאמר אכיש אל פשטתם היום ויאמר דוד על נגב יהודה ועל נגב הירחמאלי ואל נגב הקיני
11 David spared neither man nor woman to bring back alive to Gath, 'in case', as he thought, 'theyinform on us and say, "David did such and such." ' This was the way David conducted his raids al the time hestayed in Philistine territory.	11 ואיש ואשה לא יחיה דוד להביא גת לאמר פן יגדו עלינו לאמר כה עשה דוד וכה משפטו כל הימים אשר ישב בשדה פלשתים
12 Achish trusted David. 'He has made himself detested by his own people Israel,' he thought, 'and sowil be my servant for ever.'	12 ויאמן אכיש בדוד לאמר הבאש הבאיש בעמו בישראל והיה לי לעבד עולם
