1 Samuel 15

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 Samuel disse a Saul: O Senhor enviou-me para que te consagrasse rei de seu povo de Israel. Ouve agora o que diz o Senhor.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Assim fala o Senhor dos exércitos: Vou pedir contas a Amalec do que ele fez a Israel, opondo-se-lhe no caminho, quando saiu do Egito.
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Vai, pois, fere Amalec e vota ao interdito tudo o que lhe pertence, sem nada poupar: matarás homens e mulheres, crianças e meninos de peito, bois e ovelhas, camelos e jumentos.
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 Saul comunicou isso ao povo e fez o seu recenseamento em Telaim: havia duzentos mil homens de Israel e dez mil de Judá.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Saul avançou até a cidade de Amalec e pôs-se de emboscada no vale.
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 Disse aos cineus: Retirai-vos, separai-vos dos amalecitas, não suceda que eu vos envolva com eles {no massacre}, porque tratastes bem os israelitas quando saíram do Egito. E os cineus separaram-se dos amalecitas.
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 Saul bateu os amalecitas desde Hévila até Sur, que está ao oriente do Egito.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 Tomou vivo Agag, rei de Amalec, e votou todo o povo ao interdito, passando-o ao fio da espada.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 Mas Saul e seus homens pouparam a Agag assim como o melhor do rebanho miúdo e do grande, os animais cevados e os cordeiros, e tudo o que havia de melhor; não quiseram votá-los ao interdito. Só exterminaram o que era ordinário e sem valor.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 O Senhor disse a Samuel:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 Arrependo-me de ter feito rei a Saul; ele se desviou de mim e não executou as minhas ordens. Samuel irritou-se com isso, e clamou ao Senhor durante toda a noite.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 Na manhã seguinte, indo ao encontro de Saul, alguém veio dizer-lhe: Saul chegou ao Carmelo e erigiu ali uma estela, retomando em seguida o seu caminho para Gálgala.
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 Samuel foi ter com ele; Saul disse-lhe: Deus te abençoe! Cumpri, a ordem do Senhor.
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 Samuel disse-lhe: Mas que balidos de ovelhas são esses que ressoam aos meus ouvidos, e esses mugidos de gado que ouço?
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 É a presa tomada aos amalecitas, respondeu Saul. O povo poupou o melhor das ovelhas e dos bois para os sacrificar ao Senhor, teu Deus; o resto, votamo-lo ao interdito.
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 Samuel disse-lhe: Basta! vou cientificar-te do que o Senhor me disse esta noite. Fala, disse Saul.
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 E Samuel: Por pequeno que foste aos teus próprios olhos, acaso não te tornaste o chefe das tribos de Israel, e não te consagrou o Senhor, rei de Israel?
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 O Senhor te havia dado uma ordem, e te havia dito que votasses ao interdito esses pecadores, os amalecitas, combatendo-os até o completo extermínio.
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 Por que não ouviste a sua voz? Por que te lançaste sobre os despojos fazendo o mal aos olhos do Senhor.?
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 Mas eu obedeci à voz do Senhor, replicou Saul; fui pelo caminho que ele me traçou, trouxe Agag, rei de Amalec, e votei ao interdito os amalecitas.
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 O povo somente tomou dos despojos algumas ovelhas e bois, à guisa de primícias do interdito, para os sacrificar ao Senhor, teu Deus, em Gálgala.
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 Samuel replicou-lhe: Acaso o Senhor se compraz tanto nos holocaustos e sacrifícios como na obediência à sua voz? A obediência é melhor que o sacrifício e a submissão vale mais que a gordura dos carneiros.
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 A rebelião é tão culpável quanto a superstição; a desobediência é como o pecado de idolatria. Pois que rejeitaste a palavra do Senhor, também ele te rejeita e te despoja da realeza!
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 Saul disse: Pequei! Transgredi a ordem do Senhor e as tuas instruções, pois tive medo do povo e ouvi a sua voz.
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 Agora, peço-te, perdoa o meu pecado, e volta comigo para que eu adore o Senhor.
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 Não voltarei contigo!, exclamou Samuel. Rejeitaste a palavra do Senhor, por isso o Senhor te rejeita, e não quer mais que sejas rei de Israel.
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 Samuel voltou-se e ia-se retirando, mas Saul agarrou-o pela ponta do manto, o qual se rasgou.
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 Samuel disse-lhe: Assim o Senhor arranca hoje de ti a realeza sobre Israel, a fim de dá-la a outro melhor do que tu.
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 Aquele que é a verdade de Israel não mente, nem se arrepende, pois não é um homem para se arrepender.
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 Saul respondeu: Pequei, mas rogo-te que {continues} a honrar-me na presença. dos anciãos de meu povo e diante de Israel. Volta comigo, para eu adorar o Senhor, teu Deus!
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 Samuel voltou, pois, com o rei, e este adorou o Senhor.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 Samuel disse: Trazei-me Agag, rei de Amalec. Aproximou-se Agag, cheio de alegria, dizendo: Certamente passou a amargura da morte!
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 Tua espada, disse-lhe Samuel, privou as mulheres de seus filhos; agora, é tua mãe que será uma mulher sem filho. E Samuel fê-lo em pedaços diante do Senhor, em Gálgala.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 Depois disso Samuel retirou-se para Ramá, e Saul voltou para a sua casa em Gabaa de Saul.
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 O profeta não tornou mais a ver Saul até o dia de sua morte. Samuel afligia-se por causa de Saul, por se ter o Senhor arrependido de tê-lo feito rei de Israel.
