1 Samuel 15

1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 Samuele disse a Saul: "E' stato il Signore a mandarmi a consacrarti re sul suo popolo d'Israele: ora da' ascolto alle parole del Signore.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: "Voglio vendicare quello che Amalek ha fatto a Israele quando gli sbarrò la via mentre questo usciva dall'Egitto".
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Ora, va' e colpisci Amalek; vota all'anatema tutto quello che gli appartiene, non aver pietà di lui, uccidi uomini e donne, ragazzi e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini".
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 Saul convocò il popolo e lo passò in rassegna a Telaìm: duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Saul avanzò fino alla città di Amalek e tese un'imboscata nella valle.
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 Saul disse ai Keniti: "Separatevi, allontanatevi di mezzo agli Amaleciti, affinché io non vi accomuni a loro; tu infatti usasti misericordia a tutti i figli d'Israele quando essi salirono dall'Egitto". Così i Keniti si separarono dagli Amaleciti.
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 Saul colpì Amalek a partire da Avila in direzione di Sur che è ad oriente dell'Egitto.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 Catturò vivo Agag re di Amalek, mentre passò tutto il popolo a fil di spada.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e la parte migliore del gregge e dell'armento, gli animali grassi, gli agnelli e ogni cosa buona: questi non li vollero votare all'anatema; invece ogni cosa di poco valore e magra la votarono all'anatema.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Samuele:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 "Mi pento di aver costituito re Saul, poiché egli si è allontanato da me non eseguendo i miei ordini". Samuele ne ebbe sdegno e implorò il Signore tutta quella notte.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 Al mattino Samuele si affrettò ad andare incontro a Saul. Fu data questa notizia a Samuele: "Saul è giunto a Carmel, ed ecco che si è eretto un trofeo, poi proseguendo la strada del ritorno è sceso a Gàlgala".
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 Quando Samuele arrivò da Saul, Saul gli disse: "Benedetto tu dal Signore! Ho eseguito l'ordine del Signore!".
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 Ma Samuele disse: "E cosa è questo belato di gregge nelle mie orecchie, e questo muggito dell'armento che sto udendo io?".
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 Rispose Saul: "E' stato riportato da Amalek, perché il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio del gregge e dell'armento per poterlo sacrificare al Signore tuo Dio; il resto però l'abbiamo votato all'anatema".
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 Disse Samuele a Saul: "Permetti che ti annunzi quello che mi ha detto il Signore in questa notte". Gli rispose: "Di' pure!".
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 Samuele soggiunse: "Tu, benché piccolo ai tuoi propri occhi, non sei forse il capo delle tribù d'Israele? Il Signore ti ha consacrato re su Israele!
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 Il Signore ti ha inviato a una spedizione dicendo: "Va', vota all'anatema quei peccatori di Amaleciti, e fa' loro guerra finché non siano sterminati!".
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 Perché non hai dato ascolto alla voce del Signore, ma ti sei gettato sulla preda e hai compiuto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore?".
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 Saul rispose a Samuele: "Ma sì che ho dato ascolto alla voce del Signore! Mi sono messo per la via per la quale il Signore mi ha mandato; ho riportato Agag, re di Amalek, ma gli Amaleciti li ho votati all'anatema.
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 Il popolo ha prelevato dalla preda pecore e buoi, il meglio dell'interdetto per sacrificarlo al Signore, tuo Dio, a Gàlgala".
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 Samuele rispose: "Forse il Signore si compiace degli olocausti e dei sacrifici come dell'obbedienza alla voce del Signore? Ecco, l'obbedienza è migliore del sacrificio, la docilità è migliore del grasso dei montoni!
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 Sì, un peccato di divinazione è la ribellione, e vano culto e terafim è l'ostinazione. Poiché hai rigettato la parola del Signore, egli ti ha rigettato dall'essere re!".
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 Saul disse a Samuele: "Ho peccato, perché ho trasgredito il comando del Signore e le tue parole; poiché ho avuto paura del popolo, ho dato ascolto alla sua voce.
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 Ma ora, ti prego, perdona il mio peccato, e ritorna con me, che io faccia adorazione al Signore".
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 Ma Samuele rispose a Saul: "Non ritornerò con te! Poiché hai rigettato la parola del Signore, il Signore ti ha rigettato dall'essere re su Israele".
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 Samuele si voltò per partire, ma Saul afferrò un lembo del suo manto che si strappò.
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 Gli disse allora Samuele: "Oggi il Signore strappa la regalità d'Israele da dosso a te e la dà a uno più degno di te.
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 La Gloria d'Israele non mentisce e non si pente, perché egli non è un uomo da doversi ricredere".
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 Saul esclamò: "Ho peccato! Ora, ti prego, rendimi onore davanti agli anziani del mio popolo e davanti a Israele; ritorna con me perché io faccia adorazione al Signore, tuo Dio".
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 Samuele ritornò insieme con Saul e Saul fece adorazione al Signore.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 Samuele disse: "Conducetemi qua Agag, re di Amalek!". Agag andò da lui gongolante e disse: "Veramente se ne è andata l'amarezza della morte!".
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 Ma Samuele disse: "Come la tua spada privò di figli le donne, così tra le donne tua madre sarà priva del figlio!". Poi Samuele sgozzò Agag davanti al Signore a Gàlgala.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 Samuele andò poi a Rama, mentre Saul risalì alla sua casa a Gàbaa di Saul.
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 Samuele non volle più vedere Saul fino al giorno della sua morte, perché Samuele faceva lutto su Saul; e il Signore si era pentito di aver fatto regnare Saul su Israele.
