1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 E Samuele disse a Saul: II Signore mi mandò ad ungerti re del popol suo d'Israele: adesso pertanto ascolta le parole del Signore.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Queste cose dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io ho riandate tutte le cose fatte da Amalec ad Israele, e in qual modo se gli oppose nel viaggio, mentre usciva dell’Egitto.
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Tu dunque adesso va, e fa strage di Amalec, e distruggi tutto quello che a lui appartiene: non averne compassione, e non desiderare nissuna delle cose sue: ma uccidi uomini, e donne, i fanciulli, e i bambini di latte, i buoi, e le pecore, i cammelli, e gli asini.
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 Saul adunque convocò il popolo, e ne fece la rassegna come di tanti agnelli: dugento mila pedoni, e diecimila combattenti di Giuda.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Indi Saul, giunto che fu presso alla città di Amalec, pose un’imboscata nel torrente.
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 E Saul disse a' Cinei. Andate, ritiratevi, e separatevi da Amalec, affinchè per disgrazia io non vi confonda con essi: perocché voi aveste compassione di tutti i figliuoli d'Israele quando uscivan d'Egitto. E i Cinei si ritirarono dagli Amaleciti.
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 E Saul distrusse Amalec da Hevila sino a Sur, che sta dirimpetto all'Egitto.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 E prese vivo Agag re di Amalec, e trucidò tutto il popolo.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 Ma Saul, e il popolo salvarono Agag, e i migliori greggi di pecore, e i bovi, e le vestimenta, e gli arieti, e tutte le cose belle, e non vollero mandarle a male: distrussero tutte le cose spregevoli, e buone a nulla.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 E il Signore parlò a Samuele, e disse:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 Io mi pento di aver fatto re Saul, perchè egli mi ha abbandonato, e non ha adempite le mie parole. E Samuele se ne afflisse, e alzò le grida al Signore per tutta la notte.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 E alzatosi Samuele prima del giorno per andare di buon'ora a Saul, fu recato avviso a Samuele, come Saul era andato sul Carmelo, e si era fatto ergere un arco trionfale, e che partito di là era sceso a Galgala. Andò pertanto Samuele a trovar Saul; e questi offeriva al Signore un olocausto delle primizie della preda fatta sopra gli Amaleciti.
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 E giunto che fu Samuele presso Saul, Saulle gli disse: Benedetto sii tu dal Signore; io ho eseguito il comando del Signore.
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 E Samuele disse: E che voci di greggi sono quelle che risonano alle mie orecchie, e di armenti che io sento?
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 E Saul disse: Sono stati condotti dal paese di Amalec: perocché il popolo ha serbato il meglio delle pecore, e degli armenti per sacrificargli al Signore Dio tuo; il resto poi lo uccidemmo.
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: Dammi permissione, e io ti dirò quello che stanotte mi ha detto il Signore. E quegli disse a lui: Parla.
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 E Samuele disse: Non è egli vero, che essendo tu piccolo negli occhi tuoi, sei stato fatto capo delle tribù d'Israele, e il Signore ti unse in re d'Israele?
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 E il Signore ti ordinò di partire, e disse: Va, e uccidi i peccatori di Amalec, e combatterai contro di essi fino a sterminarli.
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 Per qual motivo adunque non hai tu ascoltata la voce del Signore, ma ti sei innamorato della preda, e hai fatto il male sotto gli occhi del Signore?
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 E Saul disse a Samuele: Anzi io ho ascoltata la voce del Signore, e seguitai la strada, per cui il Signore mi mandò, e ho menato Agag re di Amalec, e ho trucidati gli Amaleciti.
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 Ma il popolo separò dalla preda delle pecore, e dei bovi (come) primizie di quelli che si sono uccisi, per immolargli al Signore Dio suo in Galgala.
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 E Samuele disse: Domanda forse il Signore olocausti, e vittime, e non piuttosto che s'obbedisca alla sua voce? perocché più vale l'obbedienza che le vittime, e la docilità più che offerire il grasso degli arieti:
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 Perocché il disobbedire è come il peccato della divinazione, e il non volere soggettarsi è come il delitto d'Idolatria: perchè adunque tu hai rigettata la parola del Signore, il Signore ti ha rigettato dall'esser re.
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 E Saul disse a Samuele: Ho peccato, mentre ho trasgredita la parola del Signore, e i tuoi dettami, avendo timore del popolo, e facendo a modo di lui.
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 Ma tu adesso sopporta di grazia il mio peccato, e torna indietro con me, affinchè io, adori il Signore.
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 E Samuele disse a Saul: Non tornerò indietro con te, perchè tu hai rigettata la parola del Signore, e il Signore ha rigettato te dall'esser re d'Israele.
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 E Samuele si voltó per andarsene: ma quegli lo prese per l'orlo del suo mantello, il quale si strappò.
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 E disse a lui Samuele: II Signore ha strappato oggi di mano a te il regno d'Israele, e lo ha dato ad un altro miglior di te.
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 Or colui che in Israele trionfa, non perdonerà, nè si muoverà a pentimento: perocché egli non è un uomo che abbia a pentirsi.
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 E quegli disse: Ho peccato: ma tu adesso rendimi onore dinanzi a' seniori del mio popolo, e dinanzi ad Israele, e torna con me, affinchè io adori il Signore Dio tuo.
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 Samuele adunque tornò seguendo Saul: e Saul adorò il Signore.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 E Samuele disse: Conducetemi Agag re di Amalec. E fugli presentato Agag che era grassissimo, e tremante. E disse Agag: Così adunque (mi) divide la morte amara?
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 E disse Samuele: Siccome la tua spada privò le madri di figli, così priva di figliuoli sarà tra le donne la madre tua. E Samuele lo trucidò in Galgala dinanzi al Signore.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 Indi Samuele se n'andò a Ramatha: e Saul tornò a casa sua in Gabaa.
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 E Samuele non andò più a vedere Saul fino al dì della sua morte. Ma Samuele piangeva Saul, perchè il Signore si era pentito di averlo fatto re d'Israele.
