1 Samuel 15

1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 - Samuele disse a Saul: «Il Signore mi ha inviato per ungerti re sul popolo suo Israele. Ascolta adunque ora la voce del Signore.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Queste cose dice il Signore degli eserciti: - Ho riandato tutto ciò che Amalec fece ad Israele quando gli si oppose nel viaggio mentre usciva dall'Egitto.
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Or adunque va', e percuoti Amalec e distruggi tutto ciò che gli appartiene; non risparmiarlo, e non desiderare alcuna delle cose sue; ma uccidi uomini e donne, fanciulli e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli ed asini -».
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 Saul allora impartì ordini al popolo, e li passò in rassegna come agnelli: [erano] duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Giunto poi Saul alla città di Amalec tese un'imboscata nel torrente,
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 e disse ai Cinei: «Andatevene, ritiratevi, venite via da Amalec, affinchè io non vi coinvolga con esso [nella strage]; poichè voi aveste pietà di tutti i figli d'Israele, quando ascendevano dall'Egitto». Ritiratosi il Cineo dal mezzo degli Amaleciti,
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 Saul battè Amalec da Evila fino a Sur che sta dirimpetto all'Egitto.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 Prese poi vivo Agag, il re di Amalec, mentre tutta la turba fu passata a fil di spada.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 Tanto Saul però che il popolo risparmiò Agag e il meglio dei greggi di pecore e di buoi, e le vesti e gli arieti, e tutto ciò che di bello vi aveva; e non vollero che ciò fosse disperso, ma distrussero soltanto quello che era di niun valore e di cattiva qualità.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 La parola del Signore fu rivolta allora a Samuele in questi termini:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 «Io mi pento d'aver costituito re Saul, perchè mi ha abbandonato e non ha eseguito i miei ordini». Samuele se ne afflisse e per tutta la notte non cessò di alzare i suoi gemiti al Signore.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 Levatosi Samuele quindi di buon mattino per andare incontro a Saul, gli venne annunziato che Saul era giunto a Carmelo, dove s'era eretto un arco trionfale; e quindi tornando aveva ripreso il viaggio ed era disceso a Galgala. Venne pertanto Samuele da Saul, mentre questi stava offrendo al Signore un olocausto colle primizie del bottino apportato da Amalec.
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 Arrivato che fu Samuele da Saul, questi gli disse: «Benedetto sii dal Signore. Io ho eseguito il comando del Signore».
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 Ma Samuele chiese: «E che cosa è questo belar di pecore che mi risuona all'orecchio e questo muggir d'armenti che sento?».
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 Rispose Saul: «Li hanno qui condotti da Amalec; perchè il popolo ha riserbato il meglio delle pecore e degli armenti per immolarli al Signore Iddio tuo: il resto, però, lo abbiam distrutto».
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 Soggiunse allora Samuele a Saul: «Lasciami rivelarti quanto ebbe a dirmi stanotte il Signore». «Parla», gli rispose.
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 Samuele allora continuò: «Quando eri ben poca cosa a' tuoi occhi non sei tu divenuto capo delle tribù d'Israele? E il Signore ti unse re sopra Israele
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 e ti mandò dicendo: - Va', uccidi i peccatori di Amalec, e combattili fino al loro sterminio. -
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 Perchè, dunque non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ma ti sei gettato sul bottino e hai fatto il male sotto gli occhi del Signore?».
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 Soggiunse Saul a Samuele: «Anzi ho ascoltato la voce del Signore: andai dove il Signore mi mandò, ho fatto prigioniero Agag, re di Amalec, e ho sterminati gli Amaleciti.
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 Ma il popolo tra il bottino prese pecore e buoi, come primizie di quanto è stato distrutto per immolarli al Signore Iddio suo in Galgala».
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 Disse allora Samuele: «Vuol forse il Signore olocausti e vittime e non piuttosto che si ubbidisca alla voce del Signore? Poichè l'obbedienza vale assai di più delle vittime e il dare ascolto più che l'offrire grasso di montoni;
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 chè il ribellarsi è paragonabile al peccato della divinazione e il non voler assoggettarsi è quasi come il delitto dell'idolatria. Perchè dunque hai rigettata la parola del Signore, il Signore ha rigettato te, affinchè non sii più re».
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 Disse allora Saul a Samuele: «Ho peccato, poichè ho trasgredito gli ordini del Signore e le tue parole. Ebbi timore del popolo ed ho dato ascolto alla sua voce;
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 ma tu ora perdona il mio peccato e torna indietro con me perchè io adori il Signore».
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: «Non tornerò indietro con te: poichè tu hai rigettato la parola del Signore e il Signore ha rigettato te, affinchè tu non sii più re sopra Israele».
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 E poichè Samuele si voltava per andarsene, Saul gli afferrò il lembo del mantello che si stracciò;
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 onde Samuele disse a lui: «Il Signore ha oggi stracciato da te il regno di Israele e lo ha dato ad un tuo prossimo migliore di te.
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 Ora il trionfatore d'Israele non perdonerà e non si pentirà, poichè egli non è un uomo per pentirsi».
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 Ma Saul soggiunse: «Ho peccato, ma tu adesso onorami dinanzi ai seniori del mio popolo e dinanzi ad Israele e ritorna indietro con me, perchè adori il Signore Dio tuo».
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 Ritornato quindi indietro, Samuele seguì Saul e Saul adorò il Signore.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 Disse poi Samuele: «Menatemi qua Agag, il re di Amalec». E Agag gli fu presentato assai pingue e tremante. Agag disse: «Così adunque ne separa l'amara morte?».
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 Ma Samuele gli soggiunse: «Come la tua spada ha orbato di figli le donne, così tra le donne sarà orbata di figli la madre tua». E Samuele lo fece a pezzi dinanzi al Signore in Galgala.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 Samuele si portò poscia a Ramata e Saul salì a casa sua in Galbaa,
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 nè Samuele vide più Saul fino al giorno della sua morte. Tuttavia Samuele piangeva per Saul, perchè il Signore eransi pentito di averlo costituito re sopra Israele.
