1 Samuel 15

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 Samuel dijo a Saúl: «Fue el Señor el que me envió a ungirte rey de mi pueblo Israel. Por eso, escucha ahora las palabras del Señor.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Así habla el Señor de los ejércitos: Voy a pedir cuenta a Amalec de lo que hizo a Israel, al cortarle el camino cuando este subía de Egipto.
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Ahora ve y derrota a Amalec. Conságralo al exterminio con todo lo que posee y no lo perdones, mata a hombres y mujeres, niños y pequeños, vacas y ovejas, camellos y asnos».
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 Saúl convocó al pueblo y le pasó revista en Telam: eran doscientos mil hombres de a pie y diez mil hombres de Judá.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Luego avanzó hasta la ciudad de Amalec y tendió una emboscada en el barranco.
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 Entonces Saúl avisó a los quenitas: «¡Vamos, retírense de en medio de los amalecitas y bajen, no sea que los trate igual que a ellos! Porque ustedes han sido benévolos con todos los israelitas, cuando bajaban de Egipto». Así los quenitas se retiraron de en medio de Amalec.
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 Saúl derrotó a Amalec desde Javilá hasta la entrada de Sur, que está frente a Egipto.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 Capturó vivo a Agag, rey de Amalec, y consagró al exterminio a todo el pueblo, pasándolos al filo de la espada.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 Pero Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron la vida a Agag y a lo mejor del ganado mayor y menor, a los animales cebados, a los corderos y a todo lo que había de bueno, y no quisieron consagrarlos al exterminio. Exterminaron, en cambio, todo lo que era despreciable y sin valor.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 La palabra del Señor llegó entonces a Samuel en estos términos:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 «Estoy arrepentido de haber hecho rey a Saúl, porque se ha apartado de mí y no ha cumplido mis palabras». Samuel quedó muy perturbado y pasó la noche clamando al Señor.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 A la mañana temprano, Samuel partió al encuentro de Saúl, y le dieron esta información: «Saúl llegó a Carmel y allí se erigió una columna conmemorativa; luego dio la vuelta y siguió adelante para bajar a Guilgal».
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 Entonces Samuel se presentó ante Saúl y este le dijo: «¡Que el Señor te bendiga! Ya he cumplido la palabra del Señor».
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 Pero Samuel le preguntó: «¿Qué son esos balidos que oigo y esos mugidos que llegan a mis oídos?».
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 Saúl respondió: «Los han traído a Amalec, porque el pueblo ha perdonado lo mejor del ganado mayor y menor, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, tu Dios. El resto lo hemos consagrado al exterminio».
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 Entonces Samuel dijo a Saúl: «¡Basta! Voy a anunciarte lo que el Señor me dijo anoche». «Habla», replicó él.
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 Samuel añadió: «Aunque tú mismo te consideres poca cosa, ¿no estás al frente de las tribus de Israel? El Señor te ha ungido rey de Israel.
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 El te mandó hacer una expedición y le dijo: Ve y consagra al exterminio a esos pecadores, los amalecitas; combátelos hasta acabar con ellos.
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 ¿Por qué entonces no has escuchado la voz del Señor? ¿Por qué te has lanzado sobre el botín y has hecho lo malo a los ojos del Señor?».
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 Saúl le replicó: «¡Yo escuché la voz del Señor! Hice la expedición que él me había encomendado; traje a Agad, rey de Amalec, consagré al exterminio a los amalecitas,
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 y el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, lo mejor de lo destinado al exterminio, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, tu Dios, en Guilgal».
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 Samuel respondió: «¿Quiere el Señor holocaustos y sacrificios o quiere que se obedezca su voz? La obediencia vale más que el sacrificio; la docilidad, más que la grasa de carneros.
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 Como pecado de hechicería es la rebeldía; como crimen de idolatría es la contumacia. Porque tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor, él te ha rechazado a ti para que no seas rey».
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 Saúl dijo a Samuel: «He pecado, porque transgredí la orden del Señor y tus palabras. Tuve miedo del pueblo y escuché su demanda.
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 Pero ahora, te ruego, que perdones mi pecado; vuelve conmigo, e iré a postrarme delante del Señor».
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 Samuel respondió a Saúl: «No volveré contigo, porque tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor, y él te ha rechazado a ti para que ya no seas más rey de Israel».
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 Samuel se dio vuelta para irse, pero Saúl le tomó el borde de su manto, y este se rasgó.
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 Entonces Samuel le dijo: «Hoy el Señor te ha arrebatado el poder real sobre Israel, y se lo ha conferido a otro mejor que tú».
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 –Sin embargo, el Esplendor de Israel no miente ni se arrepiente, porque él no es un hombre para arrepentirse–.
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 Saúl dijo: «He pecado, pero te ruego que me honres ante los ancianos de mi pueblo y ante Israel: vuelve conmigo, y me postraré ante el Señor, tu Dios».
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 Entonces Samuel volvió en compañía de Saúl, y este se postró delante del Señor.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 Luego dijo Samuel: «Tráiganme a Agag, rey de los amalecitas». Agag se acercó a él muy complacido, pensando: «Seguramente, me he librado de la amargura de la muerte».
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 Pero Samuel dijo: «Como tu espada ha dejado sin hijos a tantas mujeres, así tu madre quedará sin su hijo entre las mujeres». Y descuartizó a Agag delante del Señor, en Guilgal.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 Luego Samuel partió hacia Ramá, y Saúl se fue a su casa, en Guibeá de Saúl.
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 Samuel no vio nunca más a Saúl hasta el día de su muerte. Pero estaba de duelo por él, porque el Señor se había arrepentido de haberlo hecho rey de Israel.
