NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 Os israelitas fizeram o mal aos olhos do Senhor, e o Senhor entregou-os nas mãos dos madianitas durante sete anos.
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 A mão de Madiã pesou rudemente contra Israel. Por medo dos madianitas, os filhos de Israel refugiaram-se nas cavernas das montanhas, em cavernas e fortificações.
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 Quando Israel semeava, subia Madiã com Amalec e os filhos do oriente para atacá-lo.
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 Acampavam defronte deles e devastavam as suas plantações até a vizinhança de Gaza, e não deixavam aos israelitas provisão alguma, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos.
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 Subiam com todos os seus rebanhos e tendas, semelhantes a uma nuvem de gafanhotos, e essa multidão inumerável de homens e camelos subia e devastava a terra.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 Os israelitas ficaram desse modo extenuados pelos madianitas, e clamaram ao Senhor.
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 E, tendo eles clamado ao Senhor, pedindo socorro contra os madianitas, o Senhor mandou-lhes um profeta,
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 que lhes disse: Eis o oráculo do Senhor, Deus de Israel: eu vos fiz sair do Egito e vos tirei da servidão;
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 livrei-vos da mão dos egípcios e de vossos opressores; expulsei-os de diante de vós e dei-vos a sua terra.
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 E disse-vos: eu sou o Senhor, vosso Deus: não adorareis os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra ides habitar. Mas não ouvistes a minha voz.
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 Depois veio o anjo do Senhor e sentou-se debaixo do terebinto de Efra, que pertencia a Joás, da família de Abieser. Gedeão, seu filho, estava limpando o trigo no lagar, para escondê-lo dos madianitas.
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 O anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe e disse-lhe: O Senhor está contigo, valente guerreiro!
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 Gedeão respondeu: Ah, meu senhor, se o Senhor está conosco, por que nos vieram todos esses males? Onde estão aqueles prodígios que nos contaram nossos pais, dizendo: o Senhor fez-nos verdadeiramente sair do Egito? Agora o Senhor abandonou-nos e entregou-nos nas mãos dos madianitas.
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 Então o Senhor, voltando-se para ele: Vai, disse, com essa força que tens e livra Israel dos madianitas. Porventura não sou eu que te envio?
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Ó Senhor, respondeu Gedeão, com que livrarei eu Israel? Minha família é a última de Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai.
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 O Senhor replicou: Eu estarei contigo e tu derrotarás os madianitas como se fossem um só homem.
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Prosseguiu Gedeão: Se encontrei graça aos vossos olhos, provai-me por um sinal que sois vós quem me falais.
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 Não vos afasteis daqui até que eu volte trazendo uma oferta, e a ponha diante de vós. Esperarei, respondeu o Senhor, até que voltes.
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Gedeão entrou em sua casa, preparou um cabrito e fez pães sem fermento com um efá de farinha. Pôs a carne num cesto e o caldo numa panela, levou tudo debaixo do terebinto e ofereceu-lho.
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 O anjo do Senhor disse-lhe: Toma a carne e os pães sem fermento, põe-nos sobre aquela pedra e derrama por cima o caldo. Ele assim o fez.
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 Então o anjo do Senhor estendeu a ponta da vara que tinha na mão, tocou a carne com os pães sem fermento, e imediatamente jorrou fogo da rocha que consumiu a carne e os pães sem fermento; e o anjo do Senhor desapareceu de seus olhos.
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 Gedeão reconheceu que era o anjo do Senhor e exclamou: Ai de mim, Senhor Javé, que vi o anjo do Senhor face a face.
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 O Senhor disse-lhe: Tranqüiliza-te; não temas, não morrerás.
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeão edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e chamou-o Javé-Chalom. Esse altar existe ainda hoje em Efra de Abieser.
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 Durante a noite disse-lhe o Senhor: Toma o novilho de teu pai e um segundo touro de sete anos; destrói o altar de Baal de teu pai e faze o mesmo com o ídolo de madeira que está junto dele.
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 Edificarás então um altar ao Senhor, teu Deus, em cima dessa pedra, depois de a teres preparado. Tomarás o segundo touro e o oferecerás em holocausto usando a madeira do ídolo que tiveres cortado.
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Gedeão escolheu dez dos seus servos e fez o que o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado. Temendo, porém, a família de seu pai e os habitantes da cidade, não o quis fazer durante o dia; executou tudo durante a noite.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 Chegada a manhã, quando os habitantes da cidade se levantaram, eis que viram o altar de Baal derrubado por terra, o ídolo vizinho cortado, e o segundo touro queimado em holocausto sobre o novo altar.
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 Quem fez isto?, perguntaram uns aos outros. Depois de haverem buscado e investigado cuidadosamente, foi-lhes dito: Foi Gedeão, filho de Joás.
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 Disseram então a Joás: Faze vir aqui o teu filho, para que seja morto, porque ele derrubou o altar de Baal e cortou o ídolo de madeira que estava perto!
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Joás respondeu a todos os que o interpelavam: Porventura sois vós que deveis tomar o partido de Baal? Sois vós que deveis socorrê-lo? Pois aquele que tomar o partido de Baal será morto hoje mesmo. Se Baal é deus, que defenda ele mesmo a sua causa, pois derrubaram o seu altar!
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Daquele dia em diante, Gedeão foi chamado Jerobaal, dizendo: Que Baal defenda a sua causa contra ele, pois ele derrubou o seu altar!
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Todos os madianitas, os amalecitas e os filhos do oriente se tinham coligado e, tendo passado o Jordão, acamparam no vale de Jezrael.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 O Espírito do Senhor apoderou-se de Gedeão, o qual, tocando a trombeta, convocou os filhos de Abieser para que o seguissem.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 Enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que se reuniu para segui-lo; e enviou também mensageiros às tribos de Aser, de Zabulon e de Neftali, e todos vieram juntar-se a ele.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 Gedeão disse a Deus: Se quereis realmente salvar Israel por meio de minha mão, como o dissestes,
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 eis que vou estender um velo de lã na eira: se o orvalho cair só no velo, ficando toda a terra seca, reconhecerei que é por minha mão que livrareis Israel, como o dissestes.
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 E assim aconteceu. Levantando-se Gedeão no dia seguinte pela manhã, espremeu a lã e encheu um copo de orvalho.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 Gedeão disse de novo a Deus: Não se acenda contra mim a vossa cólera se vos falo ainda uma vez! Só quero fazer mais uma prova com o velo: peço que só a lã fique seca, e o orvalho molhe toda a terra em redor.
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 E Deus assim o fez naquela noite: só o velo ficou seco, enquanto todo o solo estava coberto de orvalho.
