1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 - Ma i figli d'Israele fecero il male dinanzi al Signore, il quale li diede per sette anni in balìa di Madian,
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 che li oppresse assai. Scavarono essi fra le montagne antri e spelonche e luoghi fortificati per resistere.
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 Quando Israele avea seminato, Madian e Amalec e gli altri popolo orientali salivano
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 a piantare le tende presso di loro e devastavano tutto quanto era ancora in erba fino alle porte di Gaza e non lasciavano ad Israele nulla di quanto è necessario alla vita, nè pecore, nè buoi, nè asini,
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 poichè essi venivano con tutto il loro gregge e colle loro tende, e a guisa di locuste, quella immensa moltitudine di uomini e di cammelli si portava ovunque, devastando tutto ciò che toccava.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 Israele era dunque assai umiliato dinanzi a Madian,
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 perciò invocò il Signore, chiedendo aiuto contro i Madianiti.
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 Il Signore mandò loro un profeta a dire: «Questo dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: - Io vi ho fatto salire dall'Egitto, vi ho tratto dalla casa della schiavitù,
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 vi liberai dalle mani degli Egiziani e di tutti i nemici che vi opprimevano, li ho scacciati al vostro entrare, ho dato nelle vostre mani la loro terra
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 e dissi: "Io sono il Signore Dio vostro, non abbiate paura delle divinità degli Amorrei, nella cui terra abitate. E voi non avete voluto ascoltare la mia voce" -».
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 E venne l'angelo del Signore e si pose sotto una quercia, piantata in Efra e appartenente a Joas padre della famiglia di Ezri. Mentre Gedeone, figlio di lui, per sfuggire a Madian, se ne stava nel pressoio intento a battere e a purgare il frumento,
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 gli apparve l'angelo del Signore e gli disse: «Il Signore è teco, o uomo fortissimo».
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 Rispose Gedeone: «Te ne prego, mio signore, se il Signore è con noi, perchè c'incolgono tanti mali? Dove sono i suoi prodigi che ci narrarono i padri nostri, quando dicevano: - Il Signore ci ha tratti dall'Egitto - ? Ma adesso il Signore ci ha abbandonati e ci ha dato in mano di Madian».
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 Allora il Signore lo guardò e gli disse: «Va' con questa tua forza e libererai Israele dalle mani di Madian: sappi che sono io che ti ho mandato».
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Al che Gedeone rispose: «Di grazia, Signor mio, con che potrò io liberare Israele? Ecco, la mia famiglia è l'infima in Manasse ed io sono il più piccolo nella casa di mio padre».
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 Gli disse il Signore: «Io sarò teco e sconfiggerai i Madianiti come se fossero un uomo solo».
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Ed egli: «Se trovai grazia al tuo cospetto, dammi un segno che sei tu che parli con me,
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 e non allontanarti di qua fino a che io ritorni a portarti un sacrificio e a offrirtelo». Gli rispose Iddio: «Io attenderò la tua venuta».
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Rientrò quindi Gedeone e fece cuocere un capretto e pani azzimi fatti con una misura di farina: poi, messe le carni in un canestro e il brodo della carne in una pentola, portò tutto sotto la quercia e glielo offrì.
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 Ma l'angelo del Signore gli disse: «Prendi la carne e i pani azzimi e poni tutto sopra quella pietra e versavi sopra il brodo». Avendo egli fatto così,
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 l'angelo del Signore stese la punta del bastone che teneva in mano e toccò le carni e i pani azzimi, e salì dalla pietra il fuoco che consumò le carni e i pani azzimi; e l'angelo del Signore scomparve dagli occhi di lui.
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 Gedeone, al vedere che quello era l'angelo del Signore, esclamò: «Ahimè, mio Signore e mio Dio, io ho visto l'angelo del Signore faccia a faccia».
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 Ma il Signore gli disse: «La pace sia con te: non temere, non morrai».
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeone edificò allora in quel luogo un altare al Signore e lo chiamò "Pace del Signore", e dura [tale nome] fino a questo giorno. Mentre egli era ancora in Efra, che appartiene alla famiglia di Ezri,
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 il Signore gli apparve di notte e gli disse: «Prendi un toro del padre tuo e un altro toro di sette anni e distruggi l'altare di Baal che è del padre tuo e taglia il bosco che sta attorno all'altare;
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 edifica poi un altare al Signore Dio tuo sulla sommità di questa pietra, sulla quale hai posto prima il sacrificio; e prendendo il secondo toro l'offrirai in olocausto sulla catasta di legna, che avrai tagliata dal bosco».
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Presi adunque dieci uomini tra i suoi servi, Gedeone fece quanto il Signore gli aveva comandato; ma per timore di quei della casa del padre suo e degli uomini di quella città non volle far ciò di giorno, ma eseguì ogni cosa durante la notte.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 Quando il mattino si furono levati, gli uomini di quella città, vedendo distrutto l'altare di Baal, tagliato il bosco e posto il secondo toro sopra l'altare, che era stato allora edificato,
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 si dissero a vicenda: «Chi ha fatto ciò?». E mentre cercavano l'autore del fatto, fu loro detto: «Gedeone figlio di Joas ha fatto tutte queste cose».
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 Dissero allora a Joas: «Conduci qua fuori il tuo figliuolo, affinchè sia messo a morte, perchè ha distrutto l'altare di Baal e ha tagliato il bosco».
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Ai quali egli rispose: «Volete forse essere voi i vendicatori di Baal e combatter per lui? Chi è suo avversario muoia prima che venga la luce di domani: se è Dio si vendichi di colui che abbattè il suo altare».
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Da quel giorno Gedeone si chiamò Jerobaal, perchè Joas aveva detto : «Si vendichi Baal di colui che ne abbattè l'altare».
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Adunque tutto Madian e Amalec e tutti i popoli d'oriente si riunirono e, passato il Giordano, si accamparono nella valle di Iezrael.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 Ma lo spirito del Signore investì Gedeone, che dando fiato alla tromba convocò la casa di Abiezer, perchè lo seguisse.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 Mandò quindi messaggeri a tutto Manasse, che si mise pure dietro a lui, e ne mandò altri in Aser, Zabulon e Neftali che mossero a lui incontro.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 Disse Gedeone al Signore: «Se tu vuoi salvare per mezzo mio Israele, come hai detto,
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 io porrò questo vello di lana nell'aia: se la rugiada verrà solamente sul vello e tutta la terra rimarrà asciutta, saprò che tu per mezzo mio libererai Israele, come hai detto».
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 E avvenne così. Alzatosi al mattino per tempo, premette dal vello tanta rugiada da riempirne una conca.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 Disse ancora al Signore: «Non adirarti contro di me se un'altra volta chiedo un prodigio su questo vello. Ti prego che solamente il vello rimanga asciutto e tutta la terra sia umida di rugiada».
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 E Dio fece durante quella notte come egli avea domandato: restò asciutto solamente il vello e vi fu rugiada in tutto il suolo.
