NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 Los israelitas hicieron lo que es malo a los ojos del Señor, y él los entregó en manos de Madián durante siete años.
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 Los madianitas oprimieron a Israel, y para librarse de ellos, los israelitas se hicieron escondites en las cuevas de las montañas, en las cavernas y en los lugares escarpados.
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 Cada vez que Israel sembraba, venían los madianitas, los amalecitas y los Orientales, y los invadían.
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 Acampaban frente a ellos y destruían los productos del suelo hasta los confines de Gaza. No dejaban víveres, ovejas, bueyes ni asnos en Israel,
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 porque subían con su ganado y sus tiendas de campaña, y eran numerosos como langostas. Tanto ellos como sus camellos eran incontables, y entraban en el país para devastarlo.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 Israel quedó muy debilitado a causa de Madián, y los israelitas clamaron al Señor.
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 Cuando los israelitas clamaron al Señor a causa de Madián,
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 el Señor les envió un profeta, que les habló en estos términos: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Yo los hice subir de Egipto y los saqué de un lugar de esclavitud;
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 los libré del poder de los egipcios y de las manos de sus opresores. Los expulsé a ellos para entregarles a ustedes su territorio.
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 Y también les dije: «Yo soy el Señor, su Dios. No adoren a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuyo territorio habitan». Pero ustedes no escucharon mi voz».
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 El Angel del Señor fue a sentarse bajo la encina de Ofrá, que pertenecía a Joás de Abiézer. Su hijo Gedeón estaba moliendo trigo en el lagar, para ocultárselo a los madianitas.
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 El Angel del Señor se le apareció y le dijo: «El Señor está contigo, valiente guerrero».
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 «Perdón, señor, le respondió Gedeón; pero si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos sucede todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas esas maravillas que nos contaron nuestros padres, cuando nos decían: «El Señor nos hizo subir de Egipto?» Pero ahora él nos ha desamparado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián».
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 El Señor se volvió hacia él y le dijo: «Ve, y con tu fuerza salvarás a Israel del poder de los Madianitas. Soy yo el que te envío».
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Gedeón le respondió: «Perdón, Señor, pero ¿cómo voy a salvar yo a Israel, si mi clan es el más humildes de Manasés y yo soy el más joven en la casa de mi padre?».
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 «Yo estaré contigo, le dijo el Señor, y tú derrotarás a Madián como si fuera un solo hombre».
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Entonces Gedeón respondió: «Señor, se he alcanzado tu favor, dame una señal de que eres realmente tú el que está hablando conmigo.
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 Te ruego que no te muevas de aquí hasta que yo regrese. En seguida traeré mi ofrenda y la pondré delante de ti». El Señor le respondió: «Me quedaré hasta que vuelvas».
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Gedeón fue a cocinar un cabrito y preparó unos panes sin levadura con una medida de harina. Luego puso la carne en una canasta y el caldo en una olla; los llevó debajo de la encina y se los presentó.
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «Toma la carne y los panes ácimos, deposítalos sobre esta roca y derrama sobre ellos el caldo». Así lo hizo Gedeón.
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 Entonces el Angel del Señor tocó la carne y los panes ácimos con la punta del bastón que llevaba en la mano, y salió de la roca un fuego que los consumió. En seguida el Angel del Señor desapareció de su vista.
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 Gedeón reconoció entonces que era el Angel del Señor, y exclamó: ¡Ay de mí, Señor, porque he visto cara a cara al Angel del Señor!».
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 Pero el Señor le respondió: «Quédate en paz. No temas, no morirás».
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeón erigió allí un altar al Señor y lo llamó: «El Señor es la paz». Todavía hoy se encuentra ese altar en Ofrá de Abiézer.
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 Aquella misma noche, el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Toma el novillo de tu padre y otro toro de siete años. Luego destruirás el altar del Baal que pertenece a tu padre y cortarás el poste sagrado que está junto a él.
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 Después edificarás al Señor, tu Dios, en la cima de esta altura escarpada, un altar muy bien construido. Entonces tomarás el otro toro y lo ofrecerás en holocausto, con la leña del poste sagrado».
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Gedeón reunió a diez de sus servidores e hizo lo que el Señor le había dicho. Pero por temor a su familia y a la gente de la ciudad, en lugar de hacerlo de día, lo hizo durante la noche.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 A la mañana siguiente, toda la gente vio que el altar del Baal estaba destruido y que habían cortado el poste sagrado que estaba junto a él. Vieron también que un novillo había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar que acababa de ser edificado.
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 Entonces se preguntaron: «¿Quién habrá hecho esto?». Después de averiguarlo, supieron que había sido Gedeón, el hijo de Joás.
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 En seguida dijeron a Joás: «Trae aquí a tu hijo. ¡El debe morir, porque ha derribado el altar del Baal y ha cortado el poste sagrado que estaba junto a él!».
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Pero Joás respondió a los que estaban delante de él: «¿Acaso a ustedes les corresponde defender al Baal? ¿Son ustedes los que tienen que salvarlo? Si Baal es Dios, que se defienda solo, ya que Gedeón derribó su altar. El que pretenda defenderlo, morirá antes del amanecer».
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Por eso, a partir de ese momento, Gedeón se llamó Ierubaal, porque decían» «¡Que Baal se defienda de él, ya que él derribó su altar!».
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Todo Madián, Amalec y los Orientales se reunieron de común acuerdo, cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon en la llanura de Izreel.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 Entonces el espíritu del Señor descendió sobre Gedeón: el tocó la trompeta, y los de Abiézer se reunieron detrás de él.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 Envió mensajeros por todo el territorio de Manasés, y ellos también se le unieron. Lo mismo hizo en Aser, en Zabulón y en Neftalí, y todos ellos acudieron al encuentro.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «Si realmente vas a salvar a Israel por mi intermedio, como lo has prometido, concédeme esto:
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 Yo voy a tender un vellón de lana sobre la era; si cae rocío solamente sobre el vellón, y todo el resto queda seco, sabré que tú salvarás a Israel por mi intermedio, como lo has dicho».
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 Así sucedió: Gedeón se levantó de madrugada, exprimió el vellón para sacarle el rocío y llenó con él una copa de agua.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 Después le dijo a Dios: «No te enojes conmigo si me atrevo a hablarte nuevamente. Quisiera hacer otra prueba con el vellón: Que sólo el vellón quede seco y todo el suelo se cubra de rocío».
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 Así lo hizo Dios aquella noche: sólo el vellón quedó seco, mientras que el suelo estaba cubierto de rocío.
