NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, il quale li dette per sette anni nelle mani dei Madianiti.
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 La mano dei Madianiti fu terribile sopra Israele. Gli Israeliti, per timore dei Madianiti, andavano ad abitare sui monti, in caverne e in luoghi di difficile accesso.
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 Quando gli Israeliti avevano seminato, venivano contro di loro i Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e altri popoli dell'Oriente,
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 che, dopo aver posto le tende nel territorio degli Israeliti, devastavano tutte le messi fino al confine di Gaza. Non lasciavano niente di vivo in Israele, né pecore né buoi né asini.
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 I nemici venivano col loro bestiame; le loro tende erano numerose come le cavallette e i loro cammelli non avevano numero. Venivano nella regione per devastarla.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 Così gli Israeliti, a causa dei Madianiti, caddero in profonda miseria e alzarono il loro grido al Signore.
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 Alzarono il loro grido al Signore a motivo dei Madianiti
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 ed egli inviò loro un profeta che disse: "Così dice il Signore, Dio d'Israele: "Io vi feci uscire dall'Egitto, vi liberai dalla vostra schiavitù.
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 Vi liberai dalle mani degli Egiziani e da quelle di tutti i vostri oppressori che cacciai davanti a voi, finché non vi detti la loro terra.
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 Vi dissi che ero il Signore, Dio vostro, e perciò di non temere gli dèi degli Amorrei, nella cui terra voi abitate; ma voi non avete dato ascolto alla mia voce".
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 Venne il messaggero del Signore e si fermò sotto la quercia che era in Ofra e apparteneva a Ioas, della famiglia di Abiezer. Intanto Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, stava battendo il grano nel frantoio per sfuggire ai Madianiti.
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 Il messaggero del Signore gli apparve e gli disse: "Il Signore è con te, prode guerriero".
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 Gli rispose Gedeone: "Oh, Signore! Se il Signore è con noi, com'è che ci troviamo fra questi mali? Dove sono tutti quei prodigi del Signore, di cui ci parlano i nostri padri, quando dicono che egli ci fece uscire dall'Egitto? Ora il Signore ci ha abbandonato e ci ha dato nelle mani di Madian".
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 Il Signore allora si rivolse verso di lui con queste parole: "Va', perché con la tua forza salverai Israele dalle mani dei Madianiti. Sono io che ti mando".
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Gli rispose Gedeone: "Oh, Signore! Come farò a liberare Israele?! La mia famiglia è la più oscura in Manasse e io ne sono il membro più insignificante!".
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 Ma il Signore riprese: "Sarò io con te e tu potrai abbattere i Madianiti, come se fossero un solo uomo".
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Gedeone disse: "Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, dammi un segno che sei proprio tu quello che parla con me.
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 Non ti allontanare di qui, ti prego, finché non sarò tornato; ché voglio prepararti un dono per offrirtelo". Il messaggero del Signore l'assicurò che sarebbe restato lì finché egli non fosse tornato.
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Gedeone entrò in casa e preparò carne di capretto e pane azzimo. Posta poi la carne in una cesta e il brodo in un tegame, uscì incontro all'ospite che lo attendeva sotto la quercia e gli offrì il cibo.
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 Il messaggero di Dio, allora, gli disse di prendere la carne e le focacce, di porle su una pietra che c'era lì e versarvi sopra il brodo. Quando Gedeone ebbe fatto tutto,
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 il messaggero del Signore stese la punta del bastone che teneva in mano toccando la carne e le focacce. Subito un fuoco sprigionatosi dal sasso divorò la carne e le focacce. Poi il messaggero del Signore scomparve dalla vista di Gedeone,
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 il quale, resosi conto che quello era davvero il messaggero del Signore, esclamò: "Ahimè! Signore Dio! Ho visto davvero il messaggero del Signore faccia a faccia!".
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 Il Signore gli disse: "La pace sia con te. Non temere, ché non morrai!".
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeone edificò in quel posto un altare, al quale pose nome "Il Signore è pace": esso si trova ancor oggi in Ofra di Abiezer.
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 Accadde che quella stessa notte il Signore disse a Gedeone: "Prendi quel toro che ha tuo padre e un secondo di sette anni; poi abbatti l'altare di Baal che ha fatto tuo padre e spezza il palo sacro che gli sta accanto.
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 Costruirai poi un altare al Signore, Dio tuo, sulla cima di questo poggio, una pietra sull'altra. Prenderai il secondo toro e lo offrirai in olocausto sul legno del palo sacro che avrai fatto a pezzi".
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Gedeone, presi con sé dieci dei suoi servi, fece come gli aveva detto il Signore, e poiché temeva quelli della casa di suo padre e gli abitanti del villaggio, invece di agire di giorno, agì di notte.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 Il mattino seguente, quando gli abitanti del villaggio si svegliarono, videro che l'altare di Baal era stato frantumato, il palo sacro che gli sorgeva accanto era stato fatto a pezzi e il secondo vitello era stato sacrificato sul nuovo altare.
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 Poiché la gente voleva trovare chi era stato a compiere una cosa simile, fece un'attenta ricerca e scoprì che era stato Gedeone, figlio di Ioas.
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 Allora gli abitanti del villaggio chiesero a Ioas che consegnasse loro suo figlio per ucciderlo, perché aveva distrutto l'altare di Baal e aveva spezzato il palo sacro che gli era drizzato accanto.
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Ma Ioas rispose così alla folla che gli si accalcava d'intorno: "Volete per caso essere voi a difendere Baal? Voi a portare aiuto a lui? (Chiunque cercherà di difenderlo morrà prima di domani mattina!). Se è davvero un dio, penserà lui a vendicarsi, perché è stato abbattuto il suo altare".
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Quel giorno Gedeone ricevette l'appellativo di Ierub-Baal, perché si diceva: "Si vendichi di lui Baal, ché ha distrutto il suo altare".
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Tutti i Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e i popoli dell'Oriente si radunarono e, passato il Giordano, posero il campo nella valle di Izreel.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 Allora lo spirito del Signore investì Gedeone: questi suonò il corno e la gente di Abiezer si riunì intorno a lui, pronta alla lotta.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 Egli mandò messaggeri per tutto il territorio di Manasse e così anche gli uomini di Manasse si riunirono agli ordini di Gedeone. Poi mandò messaggeri in Aser, in Zabulon e in Neftali e anche gli uomini di queste tribù si mossero per congiungersi agli altri.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 Gedeone si rivolse a Dio: "Se hai intenzione di salvare Israele per mezzo mio, come hai promesso,
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 ecco che io stendo un vello nell'aia: se la rugiada cadrà soltanto sul vello e tutto il terreno all'intorno resterà asciutto, io saprò che tu hai intenzione, come hai detto, di salvare per mano mia Israele".
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 E così fu: quando il mattino dopo Gedeone si alzò, andò a strizzare il vello: ne venne fuori tanta rugiada da farne piena una coppa.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 Ma Gedeone si rivolse ancora a Dio: "Non divampi la tua ira contro di me, se voglio dirti ancora una cosa. Voglio ripetere ancora una volta la prova del vello: che questa volta resti asciutto solo il vello e tutto il terreno all'intorno si copra di rugiada".
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 La notte seguente Dio fece così e solo il vello restò asciutto mentre tutto il suolo intorno era coperto di rugiada.
