1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele fecero il male nel cospetto del Signore, il quale li diede in potere de' Madianiti per sette anni,
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 E furono grandemente vessati da loro. E si fecero caverne, e spelonche ne' monti e luoghi assai forti per resistere;
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 E quando Israele avea seminato, veniva il Madianita, e l'Amalecita, e tutte le altre nazioni dell'oriente;
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 E piantate vicino ad essi le tende guastavano il tutto in erba fino all'ingresso di Gaza: e non lasciavan cosa veruna ad Israele da sostentare la vita, non pecore, non bovi, non asini.
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 Imperocché venivano con tutti i loro greggi, e colle loro tende, e a guisa di locuste inondavano la terra colla immensa moltitudine di uomini, e di cammelli, e dovunque stendeansi le loro mani, portavan desolazione.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 E Israele fu ridotto in gran miseria dalla presenza de' Madianiti.
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 E alzò le grida al Signore, domandando soccorso contro de' Madianiti.
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 E il Signore mandò ad essi un uomo profeta, il quale così parlò: Queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Io vi feci uscir dall'Egitto, e vi trassi dalla casa di servitù,
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 E vi liberai dalle mani degli Egiziani, e di tutti i nemici vostri che vi straziavano: e li discacciai alla vostra venuta, e diedi a voi le loro terre.
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 E dissi: Io il Signore Dio vostro: Non temete gli dei degli Amorrhei, nella terra de' quali abitate: e non avete voluto ascoltar la mia voce.
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 Indi venne l’Angelo del Signore, e si assise sotto una quercia che era in Ephra, e apparteneva a Gioas capo della famiglia di Ezri: e mentre Gedeone suo figliuolo batteva, e nettava il grano in una cantina per fuggire, e nascondersi da' Madianiti,
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 Apparve a lui l'Angelo del Signore, e disse: II Signore è con te, o il più forte di tutti gli uomini.
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 E Gedeone gli disse: Di grazia, signor mio, se è con noi il Signore, donde avvien egli che siamo stretti da tutti questi mali? Dove sono i miracoli di lui raccontatici da' padri nostri, i quali dicevano: Dall'Egitto ci trasse il Signore? Ma adesso il Signore ci ha abbandonati, e ci ha dati in potere de' Madianiti.
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 Allora il Signore lo mirò, e disse: Va con questa tua fortezza, e libererai Israele dal potere di Madian: sappi, che son io che ti mando.
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Ma quegli rispose, e disse: Signor mio, dimmi, ti prego, in qual modo libererò io Israele? tu vedi come la mia famiglia è la infima di Manasse, e io sono il minimo della casa del padre mio.
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 E il Signore gli disse: Io sarò con te, e abbatterai i Madianiti, quasi fossero un solo uomo.
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Ed egli: Se ho trovato grazia dinanzi a te, dammi, disse, un segno che se' tu quegli che meco parli.
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 E non andartene di qua fino a tanto che io torni a te, e porti un sacrifizio, e te l'offerisca. E quegli rispose: Io aspetto il tuo ritorno.
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Gedeone adunque andò a sua casa, e cosse un capretto, e pane azzimo per una misura di farina: e mise le carni in un canestro, e il brodo delle carni in una pentola, e portò ogni cosa sotto la quercia e a lui l'offerse.
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 Disse a lui l’Angelo del Signore: Prendi le carni, e i pani azzimi, e mettili sopra quella pietra, e versa sopra di essa il brodo. E fatto ch'egli ebbe così,
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 Stese l'Angelo del Signore la punta del bastone che aveva in mano, e toccò le carni, e i pani azzimi, e uscì dalla pietra una fiamma, la quale divorò le carni, e i pani azzimi; e l'Angelo del Signore sparì da' suoi occhi.
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 E Gedeone veggendo che quegli era un Angelo del Signore, disse: Ahi, mio Signore Dio, io ho veduto un Angelo del Signore faccia a faccia.
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 E il Signore gli disse: Pace con te: non temere, tu non morrai.
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeone adunque edificò in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e chiamoIlo la pace del Signore, come si chiama fin al dì d'oggi. Ed essendo egli tuttora in Ephra, la quale appartiene alla famiglia di Ezri,
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 In quella notte dissegli il Signore: Prendi il toro del padre tuo, e l'altro toro di sette anni, e va a distruggere l’altare di Baal che è del padre tuo, e taglia il boschetto che è intorno all'altare:
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 Ed edificherai un altare al Signore Dio tuo sulla cima della pietra, sopra la qual ponesti già il sacrifizio: e prenderai l'altro toro, e l'offerirai in olocausto sopra una massa di legna del boschetto tagliato.
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Prese adunque Gedeone dieci de’ suoi servi, e fece quanto aveagli ordinato il Signore. Ma avendo paura della famiglia del padre suo, e degli uomini di quella città, non volle ciò fare di giorno, ma eseguì ogni cosa la notte.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 E gli uomini della città levatisi la mattina, vider distrutto l'altare di Baal, e il boschetto atterrato, e l'altro toro posto sopra l’altare che era stato eretto di nuovo.
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 E dissero tra di loro: Chi ha fatta tal cosa? E fatta diligente ricerca dell'autore di tal fatto, fu detto loro: Gedeone figliuolo di Gioas ha fatte tutte queste cose.
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 E dissero a Gioas: Conduci qua fuori il tuo figliuolo, affinchè sia messo a morte; perchè ha distrutto l’altare di Baal, e ha tagliato il boschetto.
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Ma quegli rispose loro: Vi assumete voi forse di far le vendette di Baal, e di combatter per lui? Chiunque è nemico di lui, muoia prima che venga il dì di domane: se egli è Dio, si vendichi di colui che ha distrutto il suo altare.
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Da quel dì in poi Gedeone fu chiamato Jerobaal per aver detto Gioas: Si vendichi Baal di colui che ha distrutto il suo altare.
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Si raunarono adunque tutti i Madianiti, e gli Amaleciti, e i popoli d'oriente; e passato il Giordano posero il campo nella valle di Jezrael.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 Ma lo spirito di Dio investì Gedeone, il quale sonando la tromba convocò la famiglia di Abiezer, perchè andasse con lui.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 E spedì avvisi a tutto Manasse, il quale anch'esso lo seguitò; e altri nunzii ad Aser, e a Zabulon, e a Nephthali, i quali andarono incontro a lui.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 E Gedeone disse a Dio: Se tu sei per salvare Israele per mezzo mio, come hai detto,
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 Io metterò questo vello di lana nell'aia: se sul vello sarà la rugiada, e tutto il terreno asciutto, io intenderò, che per mezzo di me libererai Israele, conforme hai detto.
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 E così avvenne. Ed essendosi egli alzato che era ancor notte, spremuto il vello, empì un catino di rugiada.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 E dinuovo diss'egli a Dio: Non si accenda il tuo furore contro di me, se io cerco ancor una prova chiedendo un segno nel vello. Io prego che il solo vello sia asciutto, e tutta la terra molle di rugiada.
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 E il Signore fece quella notte come egli avea domandato: e il solo vello fu asciutto, e la rugiada per tutto il terreno.
