NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and for seven years Yahweh handed them over toMidian;	1 Los israelitas hicieron lo que desagradaba a Yahveh y Yahveh los entregó durante siete años en manos de Madián,
2 and Midian bore down heavily on Israel. To escape from the Midianites the Israelites used the mountainclefts and the caves and shelters.	2 y la mano de Madián pesó sobre Israel. Para escapar de Madián, los israelitas se valieron de las hendiduras de las montañas, de las cuevas y las cumbres escarpadas.
3 Whenever Israel sowed seed the Midianites would march up with Amalek and the sons of the East.They would march on Israel.	3 Cuando sembraba Israel, venía Madián, con Amalec y los hijos de Oriente: subían contra Israel,
4 They would pitch camp on their territory and destroy the produce of the country as far as Gaza. Theyleft Israel nothing to live on, not a sheep or an ox or a donkey,	4 acampaban en sus tierras y devastaban los productos de la tierra hasta la entrada de Gaza. No dejaban víveres en Israel: ni ovejas, ni bueyes, ni asnos,
5 for they came up as thick as locusts with their cattle and their tents; they and their camels wereinnumerable, they invaded the country to pil age it.	5 porque subían numerosos como langostas, con sus ganados y sus tiendas. Ellos y sus camellos eran innumerables e invadían el país para saquearlo.
6 Thus, Midian brought Israel to great distress, and the Israelites cried to Yahweh.	6 Así Madián redujo a Israel a una gran miseria y los israelitas clamaron a Yahveh.
7 When the Israelites cried to Yahweh because of Midian,	7 Cuando los israelitas clamaron a Yahveh por causa de Madián,
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said to them, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says, "Itwas I who brought you out of Egypt, and led you out of the place of slave-labour.	8 Yahveh envió a los israelitas un profeta que les dijo: «Así habla Yahveh, Dios de Israel: Yo os hice subir de Egipto, y os saqué de la casa de servidumbre.
9 I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of al who oppressed you. I drovethem out before you and gave their country to you.	9 Os libré de la mano de los egipcios y de todos los que os oprimían. Los arrojé de delante de vosotros, os di su tierra,
10 And I said to you: I am Yahweh your God. You are not to fear the gods of the Amorites in whosecountry you are now living. But you have not listened to my voice." '	10 y os dije: “Yo soy Yahveh, vuestro Dios. No veneréis a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra habitáis.” Pero no habéis escuchado mi voz».
11 The Angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash ofAbiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the wine-press, to keep it hidden from Midian,	11 Vino el Angel de Yahveh y se sentó bajo el terebinto de Ofrá, que pertenecía a Joás de Abiézer. Su hijo Gedeón majaba trigo en el lagar para ocultárselo a Madián,
12 and the Angel of Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'Yahweh is with you, valiant warrior!'	12 cuando el Angel de Yahveh se le apareció y le dijo: «Yahveh contigo, valiente guerrero».
13 Gideon replied, 'Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, why is al this happening to us? Andwhere are al his miracles which our ancestors used to tel us about when they said, "Did not Yahweh bring usout of Egypt?" But now Yahweh has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.'	13 Contestó Gedeón: «Perdón, señor mío. Si Yahveh está con nosotros ¿por qué nos ocurre todo esto? ¿Dónde están todos esos prodigios que nos cuentan nuestros padres cuando dicen: “¿No nos hizo subir Yahveh de Egipto?” Pero ahora Yahveh nos ha abandonado, nos ha entregado en manos de Madián..».
14 At this, Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go in this strength of yours, and you wil rescue Israel fromthe power of Midian. Am I not sending you myself?'	14 Entonces Yahveh se volvió hacia él y dijo: «Vete con esa fuerza que tienes y salvarás a Israel de la mano de Madián. ¿No soy yo el que te envía?»
15 Gideon replied, 'Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassehand I am the least important of my father's family.'	15 Le respondió Gedeón: «Perdón, señor mío, ¿cómo voy a salvar yo a Israel? Mi clan es el más pobre de Manasés y yo el último en la casa de mi padre».
16 Yahweh replied, 'I shal be with you and you wil crush Midian as though it were one man.'	16 Yahveh le respondió: «Yo estaré contigo y derrotarás a Madián como si fuera un hombre solo».
17 Gideon said, 'If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that you are speaking to me.	17 Gedeón le dijo: «Si he hallado gracia a tus ojos dame una señal de que eres tú el que me hablas.
18 Please do not go away from here until I come back to you, bringing you my offering and laying it beforeyou.' And he replied, 'I shal stay until you come back.'	18 No te marches de aquí, por favor, hasta que vuelva donde ti. Te traeré mi ofrenda y la pondré delante de ti». El respondió: «Me quedaré hasta que vuelvas».
19 Gideon went away, he prepared a young goat and from an ephah of flour he made unleavened cakes.He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As heapproached,	19 Gedeón se fue, preparó un cabrito y con una medida de harina hizo unas tortas ázimas; puso la carne en un canastillo y el caldo en una olla, y lo llevó bajo el terebinto. Cuando se acercaba,
20 the Angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock andpour the broth over them.' Gideon did so.	20 le dijo el Angel de Yahveh: «Toma la carne y las tortas ázimas, ponlas sobre esa roca y vierte el caldo». Gedeón lo hizo así.
21 The Angel of Yahweh then stretched out the tip of the staff which he was carrying, and touched themeat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and theAngel of Yahweh vanished before his eyes.	21 Entonces el Angel de Yahveh extendió la punta del bastón que tenía en la mano y tocó la carne y las tortas ázimas. Salió fuego de la roca, consumió la carne y las tortas ázimas, y el Angel de Yahveh desapareció de su vista.
22 Gideon then knew that this was the Angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my Lord Yahweh! Now I haveseen the Angel of Yahweh face to face!'	22 Entonces Gedeón se dio cuenta de que era el Angel de Yahveh y dijo: «¡Ay, mi señor Yahveh! ¡Pues he visto al Angel de Yahveh cara a cara!»
23 Yahweh answered, 'Peace be with you; have no fear; you wil not die.'	23 Yahveh le respondió: «La paz sea contigo. No temas, no morirás».
24 Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh-Peace. This altar stands in our own day atOphrah of Abiezer.	24 Gedeón levantó en aquel lugar un altar a Yahveh y lo llamó Yahveh-Paz. Todavía hoy está en Ofrá de Abiezer.
25 Now that night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bul , the seven-year-old bul , and pull downthe altar to Baal belonging to your father and cut down the sacred pole beside it.	25 Sucedió que aquella misma noche Yahveh dijo a Gedeón: «Toma el toro de tu padre, el toro de siete años; vas a derribar el altar de Baal propiedad de tu padre y cortar el cipo que está junto a él.
26 Then, on top of this strong-point, build a proper altar to Yahweh your God. Then take the bul and burnit as a burnt offering on the wood of the sacred pole which you have cut down.'	26 Luego construirás a Yahveh tu Dios, en la cima de esa altura escarpada, un altar bien preparado. Tomarás el toro y lo quemarás en holocausto, con la leña del cipo que habrás cortado».
27 Gideon then took ten of his servants and did as Yahweh had ordered him. But, being too frightened ofhis family and of the townspeople to do it in daylight, he did it at night.	27 Gedeón tomó entonces diez hombres de entre sus criados e hizo como Yahveh le había ordenado. Pero, como temía a su familia y a la gente de la ciudad, en lugar de hacerlo de día, lo hizo de noche.
28 Next morning, when the townspeople got up, they found that the altar to Baal had been destroyed, thesacred pole standing beside it had been cut down and the bull had been sacrificed as a burnt offering on thenewly built altar.	28 A la mañana siguiente se levantó la gente de la ciudad; el altar de Baal estaba derruido, el cipo que se alzaba junto a él, cortado; y el toro había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar recién construido.
29 'Who has done this?' they asked one another. They searched, made enquiries and declared, 'Gideonson of Joash has done it.'	29 Entonces se dijeron unos a otros: «¿Quién habrá hecho esto?» Tras indagar y buscar dijeron: «Es Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el que lo ha hecho».
30 The townspeople then said to Joash, 'Bring out your son; he must die for having destroyed Baal's altarand cut down the sacred pole which stood beside it.'	30 La gente de la ciudad dijo entonces a Joás: «Haz salir a tu hijo, y que muera, pues ha derruido el altar de Baal y cortado el cipo que se alzaba a su lado».
31 To the people al crowding round him, Joash replied, 'Is it your job to plead for Baal? Is it your job tochampion his cause? (Anyone who pleads for Baal must be put to death before dawn.) If he is a god, let himplead for himself, now that Gideon has destroyed his altar.'	31 Joás repondió a todos los que tenía delante: «¿Es que vosotros vais a salir en defensa de Baal? ¿Vosotros le vais a salvar? (El que defiende a Baal, tiene que morir antes del amanecer.) Si es dios, que pleitee con él, ya que le destruyó su altar».
32 That day, Gideon was given the name Jerubbaal, because, they said, 'Baal must plead against him,because he has destroyed his altar!'	32 Aquel día se llamó a Gedeón Yerubbaal, porque decían: «¡Que Baal pleitee con él, pues le destruyó su altar!».
33 Al Midian and Amalek and the sons of the East joined forces and, having crossed the Jordan, pitchedcamp in the plain of Jezreel.	33 Todo Madián, Amalec y los hijos de Oriente se juntaron, pasaron el Jordán, y acamparon en la llanura de Yizreel.
34 And the spirit of Yahweh clothed Gideon around; he sounded the horn and Abiezer ral ied behind him.	34 El espíritu de Yahveh revistió a Gedeón; él tocó el cuerno y Abiezer se reunió a él.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and Manasseh too rallied behind him; he sentmessengers to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, and they marched out to meet him.	35 Envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, que se reunió también con él; y envió mensajeros por Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, que le salieron al encuentro.
36 Gideon said to God, 'If it is real y you delivering Israel by means of me, as you have said,	36 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «Si verdaderamente vas a salvar por mi mano a Israel, como has dicho,
37 look, I am going to put a wool en fleece on the threshing-floor; if there is dew only on the fleece and althe ground stays dry, then I shall know that you wil deliver Israel by means of me, as you have said.'	37 yo voy a tender un vellón sobre la era; si hay rocío solamente sobre el vellón y todo el suelo queda seco, sabré que tú salvarás a Israel por mi mano, como has prometido».
38 And so it happened. Early next morning, Gideon got up, squeezed the fleece and wrung enough dewout of the fleece to fill a cup.	38 Así sucedió. Gedeón se levantó de madrugada, estrujó el vellón y exprimió su rocío, una copa llena de agua.
39 Gideon then said to God, 'Do not be angry with me if I speak just once more. Al ow me to make thefleece-test just once more: let the fleece alone be dry and there be dew al over the ground!'	39 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «No te irrites contra mí si me atrevo a hablar de nuevo. Por favor, quisiera hacer por última vez la prueba con el vellón: que quede seco sólo el vellón y que haya rocío por todo el suelo».
40 And God did so that night. The fleece alone stayed dry, and there was dew al over the ground.	40 Y Dios lo hizo así aquella noche. Quedó seco solamente el vellón y por todo el suelo había rocío.
