NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.	1 En ces jours-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël. C’était le moment où la tribu de Dan cherchait un territoire où s’installer, car jusqu’à ce jour ils n’avaient pas reçu d’héritage au milieu des tribus d’Israël.
2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.	2 Les gens de Dan envoyèrent donc de chez eux cinq hommes de leur clan, des hommes solides de Soréa et d’Echtaol, pour faire une reconnaissance dans le pays et l’explorer. Ils leur dirent: “Allez inspecter le pays.” Ceux-ci arrivèrent donc dans les monts d’Éphraïm, près de la maison de Mika, et là ils passèrent la nuit.
3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'	3 Comme ils étaient tout près de la maison de Mika, ils entendirent la voix du jeune Lévite et ils firent un détour. Ils le questionnèrent: “Qui t’a amené ici? Que fais-tu en ce lieu? Qu’as-tu ici?”
4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'	4 Il leur répondit: “Mika a fait pour moi ceci et cela, il me paie et je lui sers de prêtre.”
5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'	5 Ils lui dirent: “Consulte donc Dieu pour que nous sachions si ce voyage que nous sommes en train de faire, réussira.”
6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'	6 Le prêtre leur dit: “Allez en paix! Votre voyage est sous le regard de Dieu.”
7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.	7 Les cinq hommes s’en allèrent donc et ils arrivèrent à Laïch. Ils virent que les habitants vivaient sans crainte, selon l’habitude des Sidoniens, que la ville était paisible et confiante, sans roi pour la gouverner, qu’ils étaient loin des Sidoniens et n’avaient de liens avec personne.
8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'	8 Quand ils retournèrent vers leurs frères à Soréa et Echtaol, ceux-ci leur demandèrent: “Alors! Quelles nouvelles?”
9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.	9 Ils répondirent: “Debout! Allons! Nous avons vu une terre magnifique! Mais quoi, vous restez là! Allez, en route, il faut nous emparer de cette région!
10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'	10 Vous trouverez là un peuple sans méfiance. Leur territoire est vaste et large, Dieu l’a livré entre vos mains. Rien ne manque là-bas de tout ce qu’on peut trouver sur la terre.”
11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.	11 Les Danites partirent donc de Soréa et Echtaol au nombre de 600 hommes équipés pour la guerre.
12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.	12 Ils montèrent à Kiryat-Yéarim en Juda, où ils campèrent. C’est pour cela qu’on a appelé ce lieu Camp-de-Dan jusqu’à ce jour: il se trouve à l’ouest de Kiryat-Yéarim.
13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.	13 De là ils partirent pour la montagne d’Éphraïm et arrivèrent près de la maison de Mika.
14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'	14 Alors, les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays jusqu’à Laïch, prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: “Savez-vous qu’il y a dans l’une de ces maisons un éphod et des téraphim, une idole et une statuette de bronze? Pensez un peu à ce que vous devez faire.”
15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.	15 Ils firent un détour et entrèrent dans la maison de Mika. Le jeune Lévite était là et ils le saluèrent
16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,	16 tandis que les 600 hommes, les Danites en armes, se tenaient devant l’entrée de la porte.
17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.	17 Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays, montèrent, entrèrent dans la maison, prirent l’idole, l’éphod, les téraphim et la statuette de bronze. Le prêtre était là à l’entrée de la porte avec les 600 hommes en armes.
18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'	18 Voyant les cinq hommes qui entraient dans la maison de Mika, prenaient l’idole, l’éphod, les téraphim et la statuette de bronze, le prêtre leur dit: “Qu’est-ce que vous faites là?”
19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'	19 Ils répondirent: “Tais-toi! Mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous: tu seras pour nous un père et un prêtre. Que vaut-il mieux pour toi: être le prêtre d’un seul homme dans sa maison, ou être le prêtre de toute une tribu, de tout un clan en Israël?”
20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.	20 Le prêtre en eut la joie au cœur. Il prit l’éphod, les téraphim, l’idole, la statuette de bronze et se mit en route avec tous ces hommes.
21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.	21 Au moment de reprendre leur marche ils avaient placé devant eux les petits enfants, le bétail et les bagages.
22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.	22 Comme ils étaient déjà loin de la maison, les proches voisins de Mika s’attroupèrent et se lancèrent à la poursuite des Danites;
23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'	23 et ils criaient derrière eux. Les Danites se retournèrent et dirent à Mika: “Pourquoi cet attroupement?”
24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '	24 Il leur répondit: “Vous avez pris les dieux que je m’étais fabriqués, vous me prenez mon prêtre et vous partez! Que me reste-t-il? Et vous me demandez ce qu’il y a?”
25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'	25 Les Danites lui dirent: “Arrête de crier sur nous, car des hommes agacés pourraient bien se jeter sur vous; toi et ta famille vous pourriez bien y laisser votre peau!”
26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.	26 Les Danites reprirent leur route et, voyant qu’ils étaient les plus forts, Mika fit demi-tour et revint à sa maison.
27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.	27 Les Danites emmenèrent donc tout ce qu’avait fait Mika, ainsi que le prêtre qui était chez lui, et ils tombèrent à Laïch sur une population paisible et sans méfiance. Ils passèrent tout le monde au fil de l’épée et brûlèrent la ville.
28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it	28 Il n’y eut personne pour la sauver, car Sidon était éloignée et eux n’avaient de lien avec personne. La ville en effet se trouve dans la plaine en direction de Beth-Réhob. Ils la reconstruisirent et s’y installèrent.
29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.	29 Ils donnèrent à la ville le nom de Dan, en souvenir de leur père Dan, fils d’Israël; mais auparavant la ville s’appelait Laïch.
30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.	30 Les Danites installèrent l’idole pour leur compte, et Yonathan, fils de Guerchom, fils de Moïse, et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu de Dan jusqu’au jour de la déportation.
31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.	31 Ils installèrent au milieu d’eux l’idole que Mika avait faite et cela dura aussi longtemps que la maison de Dieu à Silo.
