1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.	1 In quel tempo non era re in Israele, e la tribù di Dan cercava luogo da stabilirvisi: perocché fino a quel giorno ella non aveva occupata la sua porzione tra le altre tribù.
2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.	2 Mandarono adunque i figliuoli di Dan cinque uomini di Saraa, e di Esthaol, i più valorosi della loro stirpe, e famiglia, a visitare diligentemente il paese, e disser loro: Andate, ed esaminate la terra. I quali, partiti che furono arrivarono al monte Ephraim, ed entrarono in casa di Micha, e vi si riposarono:
3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'	3 E avendo riconosciuto il giovane Levita alla favella, e albergando con lui gli dissero: Chi ti ha condotto in questo luogo? che fai tu qui? e a qual fine ci se’ venuto?
4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'	4 Rispose loro: Micha ha fatto per me questo, e questo, e mi dà stipendio, perch’io sia suo sacerdote.
5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'	5 E lo pregarono che consultasse il Signore, affinchè potesser sapere, se il loro viaggio sarebbe felice, e se il loro affare riuscirebbe.
6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'	6 Ed egli rispose loro: Andate in pace; il Signore seconda il vostro disegno, e il viaggio da voi intrapreso.
7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.	7 E partitisi que' cinque uomini giunsero a Lais, e videro come il popolo che l'abitava, vivea senza timori, tranquillo, e in pace, secondo il fare de' Sidoni, non avendo chi lo disturbasse, ed essendo grandemente ricco, e in lontananza da Sidone, e separato da tutti gli uomini.
8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'	8 E se ne tornarono a' loro fratelli in Saraa, e in Esthaol; e interrogati da loro di quel che avessero fatto, risposero:
9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.	9 Su via, andiamo verso quel popolo: imperocché la terra che abbiam veduta, è molto ricca e fertile: non siate negligenti, non mettete tempo in mezzo: andiamo ad occuparla, non avremo da durar fatica.
10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'	10 Entreremo in casa di gente senza sospetti, in paese vastissimo, e il Signore ci farà padroni di un luogo, dove non si scarseggia di veruna di quelle cose che son prodotte dalla terra.
11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.	11 Partirono adunque da Saraa, ed Esthaol secento uomini della stirpe di Dan armati come per fare battaglia,
12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.	12 E giunti presso a Cariathiarim di Giuda, ivi si fermarono: quel luogo da quel tempo fu nomato il campo di Dan, ed è dietro a Chariathiarim.
13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.	13 Di dove passarono al monte di Ephraim. E giunti che furono presso alla casa di Micha,
14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'	14 Dissero i cinque uomini mandati già a visitare la terra di Lais, agli altri loro fratelli: Voi sapete che in questa casa ci è un Ephod, de' Theraphim, e un simulacro scolpito, e un di getto: pensate quel che vi paja di fare.
15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.	15 E usciti un po’ fuori di strada entrarono nell’abitazione del giovane Levita, il quale stava con Micha: e lo salutarono con dolci parole.
16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,	16 E i secento uomini armati com'erano, stavano davanti alla porta.
17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.	17 E quelli che erano entrati nell'abitazione del giovane, si affaccendavano per pigliare la statua, e l'Ephod: e i Teraphim, e il simulacro di getto; e il sacerdote stava alla porta, mentre i secento uomini di sommo valore stavano in poca distanza apettando.
18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'	18 Quegli adunque che erano entrati dentro, preser la statua, e l'Ephod, e gl’idoli, e il simulacro di getto. E il sacerdote disse loro: Che fate voi?
19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'	19 Gli risposero: Taci, e mettiti un dito sulla bocca: e vieni con noi che ti terremo in luogo di padre, e di sacerdote. Che è meglio per te, di essere sacerdote nella casa di un uomo solo, ovvero in una tribù, e in una famiglia d'Israele?
20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.	20 Egli, udito questo, si arrendette alle loro parole, e prese l'Ephod, e gl'idoli, e la statua, e andossene con loro.
21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.	21 E quelli partitisi, e avendo fatto andare innanzi i bambini, e i bestiami, e tutto quel che aveano di più caro,
22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.	22 Ed essendo già lontani dalla casa di Micha, la gente che abitava nella casa di Micha, gl’inseguì con alte grida,
23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'	23 E principiarono a fare schiamazzo dietro a loro. Ed eglino rivoltatisi indietro dissero a Micha: Che vuoi? perchè gridi tu?
24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '	24 Ed egli rispose: Mi avete portato via gli dei che io mi era fatti, e il sacerdote, e tutto quel che io avea, e dite: Che hai?
25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'	25 Ma i figliuoli di Dan gli dissero: Guardati dal farne più parola con noi, affinchè non si muovan contro di te degli uomini di mal talento, e tu abbi a perire con la tua casa.
26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.	26 E così eglino seguitarono il viaggio incominciato. E Micha veggendo ch'essi ne potevano più di lui, se ne tornò a casa sua.
27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.	27 E i secento uomini menaron via il sacerdote, e quel che si è già detto: e arrivarono a Lais a quel popolo tranquillo, e senza sospetto, e ne fecer macello, e incendiarono la città.
28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it	28 Non essendovi stato nissuno che la soccorresse; perchè era lungi da Sidone, e non avea società, nè commercio con altri uomini. E questa città era situata nel paese di Rohob: ed essi la riedificarono, e l'abitarono,
29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.	29 Chiamando città di Dan dal nome del padre loro figliuolo d'Israele quella che prima dicevasi Lais.
30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.	30 Ed eressero la loro statua, e Gionatham figliuolo di Gersam figliuolo di Mosè, e i suoi figliuoli furon sacerdoti nella tribù di Dan fino al giorno della sua schiavitù.
31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.	31 E l'idolo di Micha rimase presso di loro per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio stette in Silo: in quel tempo non v'era re in Israele.
