NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.	1 Al tempo in cui non c'era re in Israele, la tribù di Dan cercava un territorio da abitare, non avendo fino a quel giorno ricevuta la sua parte fra le tribù.
2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.	2 I figli di Dan mandarono adunque cinque uomini della loro stirpe e della loro famiglia, tra i più valorosi di Saraa e di Estaol, ad esplorare il paese e ad esaminarlo diligentemente. Avuto l'ordine: « Andate ad esplorare il paese » e messisi in cammino, essi arrivarono al monte d'Efraim, ove, entrati in casa di Mica, vi si riposarono.
3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'	3 Trovatisi nella stessa casa col giovane levita di cui riconobbero la voce, gli dissero: « Chi ti ha condotto qua? Che fai qui? Perchè ci sei voluto venire? »
4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'	4 Egli rispose loro: « Mica ha fatto per me questo e questo, e mi ha dato uno stipendio, perchè gli serva da sacerdote ».
5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'	5 Essi allora lo pregarono di consultare il Signore, per poter sapere se farebbero un felice viaggio e se andrebbe a finir bene la loro impresa.
6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'	6 Ed egli rispose loro: « Andate pure in pace: il Signore riguarda la vostra via e il vostro cammino ».
7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.	7 Rimessisi in cammino, quei cinque uomini giunsero a Lais, e vedutala abitata da un popolo senza alcun timore, alla maniera dei Sidoni, sicuro e tranquillo, non avendo chi l'attacchi, e molto ricco, e lontano da Sidone, e separato da tutti gli uomini,
8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'	8 tornarono ai loro fratelli in Saraa e in Estaol, e risposero a quei che li interrogavano sulla loro missione:
9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.	9 « Su via, andiamo verso quel popolo, perchè abbiamo trovato un paese molto ricco e fertile. Non vi lasciate fuggir l'occasione! Senza por tempo in mezzo, andiamo ad occuparlo: non avremo a durar fatica.
10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'	10 Entreremo da gente senza sospetti, in un paese vastissimo, e il Signore ci darà un luogo dove nulla manca di ciò che produce la terra ».
11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.	11 Cosi dalla famiglia di Dan, da Saraa e da Estaol partirono seicento uomini in assetto di guerra,
12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.	12 salendo si fermarono a Cariatiarim di Giuda, e quel luogo, che è a occidente di Cariatiarim, da quel giorno fu chiamato Campo di Dan.
13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.	13 Di là passarono al monte d'Efraim. Giunti alla casa di Mica,
14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'	14 i cinque che erano stati mandati ad esplorare la terra di Lais dissero agli altri loro fratelli: « Vi facciamo sapere che in queste case vi è un efod, dei terafim, una scultura e una statua di getto: pensate al da farsi ».
15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.	15 E, deviando un poco entrarono nella casa del giovane levita che abitava nella casa di Mica e lo salutarono con parole di pace.
16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,	16 Or mentre i seicento uomini, armati come erano, stavano davanti alla porta,
17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.	17 quelli che erano entrati in casa del giovane si sforzavano di portar via la scultura, l'efod, i terafim e la statua di getto. Il sacerdote stava alla porta, mentre i seicento uomini di sommo valore stavano aspettando a poca distanza.
18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'	18 Quelli che erano entrati dentro portarono via la scultura, l'efod, gli idoli e la statua di getto. E il sacerdote disse loro: « Che mi fate?»
19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'	19 Gli risposero: «Taci, mettiti un dito sulla bocca e vieni con noi ad essere nostro padre e sacerdote. Che è meglio per te, essere sacerdote nella casa di un uomo solo ovvero in una tribù e in una famiglia d'Israele? »
20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.	20 Il sacerdote, sentito ciò, si arrese alle loro parole, e, preso l'efod, gli idoli e la scultura, andò con loro.
21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.	21 Essi eran già partiti, e, fatti andare innanzi i bambini, i bestiami ed ogni cosa preziosa,
22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.	22 Eran già lontani dalla casa di Mica, quando gli uomini che abitavano nelle case di Mica, radunatisi, l'inseguirono.
23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'	23 Sentendoli gridare dietro, si voltarono e dissero a Mica: « Che vuoi? Perchè gridi? »
24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '	24 E Mica: « Avete portato via gli dèi da me fatti, e il sacerdote, e tutto quello che avevo, e poi mi dite: Che cosa hai? »
25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'	25 Ma i figli di Dan gli risposero: « Guardati dal farti sentire ancora da noi, se non vuoi che ti saltino addosso degli uomini irritati a farti perire con tutta la tua casa ».
26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.	26 E seguitarono il loro viaggio, mentre Mica, vedutili più forti, se ne tornava a casa.
27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.	27 Quei seicento uomini che avevan menato via il sacerdote e quanto abbiam detto sopra, giunti a Lais, ad un popolo tranquillo e sicuro, li passarono a fil di spada e diedero la città alle fiamme;
28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it	28 non aveva chi la soccorresse, perchè era lontana da Sidone e non aveva alleanze nè commercio con gli altri uomini. Questa città era situata nel paese di Rohob. Essi la riedificarono e l'abitarono, e,
29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.	29 dal nome del loro padre generato da Israele, chiamarono Dan la città che prima era detta Lais.
30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.	30 I figli di Dan si eressero la scultura, e Gionatan, figlio di Gersam, figlio di Mosè, e i suoi figli furon sacerdoti della tribù di Dan, sino al giorno della loro cattività.
31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.	31 L'idolo di Mica rimase presso di loro per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio restò in Silo. In quel tempo non vi era re in Israele.
