1 From Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus through the wil of God in accordance with his promise of life in ChristJesus,	1 Paolo, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per volontà di Dio, secondo la promessa della vita che è in Cristo Gesù,
2 to Timothy, dear son of mine. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus ourLord.	2 al carissimo figliolo Timoteo grazia e misericordia e pace da Dio Padre, e da Cristo Gesù Signore nostro.
3 Night and day I thank God whom I serve with a pure conscience as my ancestors did. I remember you inmy prayers constantly night and day;	3 Rendo grazie a Dio, al quale coi miei antenati servo con pura coscienza, perchè notte e giorno, continuamente, fo menzione di te nelle mie preghiere,
4 I remember your tears and long to see you again to complete my joy.	4 e, ricordando le tue lacrime, mi struggo di vederti, per esser ricolmato di gioia,
5 I also remember your sincere faith, a faith which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois, and your motherEunice, and I am sure dwel s also in you.	5 memore di quella tua fede sincera che animò la tua nonna Loide e la tua madre Eunice e, ne son certo, anima anche te.
6 That is why I am reminding you now to fan into a flame the gift of God that you possess through thelaying on of my hands.	6 Per questa ragione ti raccomando di ravvivare la grazia di Dio che è in te per l'imposizione delle mie mani;
7 God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power and love and self-control.	7 perchè Dio non ci ha dato uno spirito di timidità, ma di fortezza, d'amore, di saggezza.
8 So you are never to be ashamed of witnessing to our Lord, or ashamed of me for being his prisoner; butshare in my hardships for the sake of the gospel, relying on the power of God	8 Non ti vergognare adunque di rendere testimonianza a nostro Signore, nè di me prigioniero per lui, ma soffri anche tu pel Vangelo, sorretto dalla virtù di Dio,
9 who has saved us and called us to be holy -- not because of anything we ourselves had done but for hisown purpose and by his own grace. This grace had already been granted to us, in Christ Jesus, before thebeginning of time,	9 che ci ha liberati e ci ha chiamati colla sua santa vocazione, non già per le opere nostre, ma secondo il suo disegno e per la grazia a noi concessa in Cristo Gesù, prima che cominciassero i secoli;
10 but it has been revealed only by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus. He has abolished death,and he has brought to light immortality and life through the gospel,	10 ma che si è manifestata ora per l'apparizione del Salvatore nostro Gesù Cristo, il quale, distrutta la morte, ha rivelata la vita e l'immortalità mediante il Vangelo,
11 in whose service I have been made herald, apostle and teacher.	11 del quale io sono stato costituito predicatore e Apostolo e dottore delle Genti.
12 That is why I am experiencing my present sufferings; but I am not ashamed, because I know in whom Ihave put my trust, and I have no doubt at all that he is able to safeguard until that Day what I have entrusted tohim.	12 Ecco la causa per cui soffro queste pene; ma non ne arrossisco, perchè so bene in chi ho posto la mia fiducia e son certo che Egli è sì potente da conservare il mio deposito fino a quel giorno.
13 Keep as your pattern the sound teaching you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are inChrist Jesus.	13 La norma delle sane istruzioni che da me hai ricevute, conservala nella fede e nella carità che è in Cristo Gesù.
14 With the help of the Holy Spirit who dwel s in us, look after that precious thing given in trust.	14 Il buon deposito custodiscilo per mezzo dello Spirito Santo, che abita in noi.
15 As you know, Phygelus and Hermogenes and al the others in Asia have deserted me.	15 Tu sai come si sono da me alienati tutti quelli dell'Asia, tra i quali Figello ed Ermogene.
16 I hope the Lord wil be kind to al the family of Onesiphorus, because he has often been a comfort tome and has never been ashamed of my chains.	16 Usi il Signore misericordia alla famiglia di Onesiforo, il quale mi ha spesso consolato, e non s'è vergognato della mia catena,
17 On the contrary, as soon as he reached Rome, he searched hard for me and found me.	17 anzi, appena arrivato a Roma, s'è messo con gran premura a cercarmi, e mi ha trovato.
18 May the Lord grant him to find the Lord's mercy on that Day. You know better than anyone else howmuch he helped me at Ephesus.	18 Gli conceda il Signore di trovar misericordia davanti al Signore in quel giorno. Quanti servigi mi abbia resi ad Efeso lo sai meglio di me.
