Joshua 24

1 Joshua gathered al the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned al the elders ofIsrael, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence.	1 Poi Giosuè adunò tutte le tribù d'Israele in Sichern, e convocati i seniori, i principi, i giudici e i magistrati davanti al Signore,
2 Joshua then said to al the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, yourancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods.	2 parlò così al popolo: « Queste cose dire ii Signore Dio d'Israele: Da principio i vostri padri, Tare padre di Abramo e di Nacor, abitarono di là dal fiume e servirono agli dèi strameri.
3 I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length andbreadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac.	3 Ma io, tratto il vostro padre Abramo dalla Mesopotamia, lo condussi nella terra di Canaan, ove moltiplicai la sua stirpe,
4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir.Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.	4 gli diedi Isacco, al quale diedi poi Giacobbe ed Esaù. Diedi inpossesso ad Esaù il monte Seir; Giacobbe e i suoi figli scesero nell'Egitto.
5 I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; final y I broughtyou out.	5 Poi mandai Mosè ed Aronne, e percossi l'Egitto con molti segni e prodigi
6 I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestorswith chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds.	6 e trassi voi e i vostri padri dall'Egittoe arrivaste al mare. Gli Egiziani inseguirono i vostri padri con carri e cavalleria fino al Mar Rosso;
7 They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made thesea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while,you lived in the desert.	7 ma avendo i figli d'Israele gridato al Signore, Egli pose tra voi e gli Egiziani le tenebre e fe' piombare sopra di loro il mare, e li ricoperse. I vostri occhi videro quanto feci in Egitto. Poi restaste molto tempo nel deserto.
8 I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan;they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since Idestroyed them before you.	8 Io v'introdussi nella terra dell'Amorreo che abitava di là dal Giordano. Essi vi attaccarono, ma io lidiedi nelle vostre mani, e voi dopo esservi impadroniti del loro paese, li distruggeste.
9 Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beorto come and curse you.	9 Balac, figlio di Sefor, re di Moab, silevò a combattere contro Israele, e mandò a chiamare Balaam figlio di Beor,perchè vi maledicesse;
10 But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.	10 ma io invece di ascoltarlo, vi benedissi per mezzo di lui e vi liberai dalla sua mano.
11 "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you:Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them al at your mercy.	11 Poi, passato il Giordano, arrivaste a Gerico. Gli abitanti di questa città: l'Amorreo, il Ferezeo, il Cananeo, l'Eteo, il Gergeseo,l'Eveo, il Gebuseo, combatteron contro di voi; ma io li diedi nelle vostre mani;
12 I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the workof your sword or of your bow.	12 cacciai dai loro luoghi i due re Amorrei, mandando avanti a voi dei calabroni, e non per mezzo della tua spada e del tuo arco.
13 And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, althoughyou live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."	13 Io vi ho dato una terra che voi non avete lavorata, delle città da abitare che voi non avete edificate, delle vigne e degli uliveti che non avete piantati.
14 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestorsserved beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.	14 Or dunque temete il Signore, servitelo con cuore perfetto, con tutta sincerità, e tolti gli dèi ai quali servirono i vostri, padri in Mesopotamia e in Egitto, servite al Signore.
15 But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you domean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites inwhose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shal serve Yahweh.'	15 Se poi non vi sembra di servire al Signore, a voi la scelta: eleggete oggi quel che vi piace, a chi dobbiate servare: se agli dèi ai quali servirono i vostri padri in Mesopotamia, oppure agli dèi dei di Amorrei, nella terra dei quali abitate; io e la mia casa serviremo al Signore ».
16 The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods!	16 Il popolo rispose e disse: « Non sia mai che abbandoneremo il Signore per servire a dèi stranieri!
17 Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place ofslave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way wetravel ed and among all the peoples through whom we passed.	17 Perché è stato il Signore nostro Dio Colui che trasse noi e i padri nostri dalla terra d'Egitto, dalla casa di servitù, e fece fotte i nostri occhi dei grandi prodigi, e ci custodì per tutto il viaggio che facemmo, in mezzo a quanti popoli passammo.
18 And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in thecountry. We too shal serve Yahweh, for he is our God.'	18 Egli scacciò tutte le nazioni, l'Amorreo abitatore della terra in cui siamo entrati. Noi dunque serviremo al Signore, per chè Egli è il nostro Dio ».
19 Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is ajealous God who wil not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins.	19 Ma Giosuè disse al popolo: « Voi non potrete servire al Signore, perchè Egli è un Dio santo e altamente geloso, e non perdonerà le vostre iniquità e i vostri peccati.
20 If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spiteof having been good to you in the past, wil destroy you.'	20 Se abbandonerete il Signore per servire dèi stranieri, Egli si rivolgerà, vi affliggerà, vi disperderà dopo avervi fatto del bene ».
21 The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.'	21 E il popolo disse a Giosuè: « Sarà il contrario, per chè noi serviremo al Signore ».
22 Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, toserve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!'	22 Allora Giosuè disse al popolo: « Ne siete testimoni: voi avete scelto il Signore per servirlo ». Ed essi risposero: « Ne siam testimoni ».
23 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your al egiance to Yahweh, God ofIsrael!'	23 Or dunque, diss'egli, togliete di mezzo a voi gli dèi stranieri e umiliate i vostri cuori al Signore Dio d'Israele ».
24 The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shalobey!'	24 E il popolo disse a Giosuè: « Serviremo al Signore Dio nostro, e saremo obbedienti ai suoi comandamenti ».
25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them atShechem.	25 Così Giosuè fece in quel giorno l'alleanza, e propose al popolo precetti e leggi in Sichem.
26 Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it upthere, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary.	26 Scrisse pure tutte queste parole nel libro della legge del Signore, e, presa una gran pietra, e postala sotto la quercia che era nel santuario del Signore,
27 Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard al thewords that Yahweh has spoken to us: it wil be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.'	27 disse a tutto il popolo: « Ecco, questa pietra che ha udite tutte le parole dette a voi dal Signore, sarà per testimonianza, affinchè non possiate negare e mentire al Signore Dio vostro ».
28 Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage.	28 E rimandò il popolo, ciascuno nei suoi possessi
29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.	29 Dopo questo il servo del Signore, Giosuè, figlio di Nun, morì a cento dieci anni.
30 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies inthe highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.	30 Lo seppellirono nei suoi possessi in Tamnatsare, che è sul monte Efraim, dalla parte settentrionale del monte Gaas.
31 Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.	31 Israele servì al Signore tutto il tempo di Giosuè e degli anziani vissuti lungamente dopo Giosuè, i quali avevan conosciute tutte le opere del Signore, da lui fatte in Israele.
32 As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried atShechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamorfather of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph.	32 Le ossa di Giuseppe, che i figli d'Israele avevano portate dall'Egitto, furon sepolte in Sichem, nel pezzo di terra che Giacobbe aveva comprato dai figli di Emor, padre di Sichem, per cento agnelli, o che fu poi proprietà dei fìgli di Giuseppe.
33 Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which hadbeen given to him in the highlands of Ephraim.	33 Mori poi anche Eleazaro figlio di Aronne e lo seppellirono in Gabaat di Finees, suo figlio, città che gli era stata data sul monte Efraim.
