1 Joshua gathered al the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned al the elders ofIsrael, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence.	1 Josué rassembla donc à Sichem toutes les tribus d’Israël. Il convoqua les anciens d’Israël, les chefs, les juges et les scribes, et ils se présentèrent devant Dieu.
2 Joshua then said to al the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, yourancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods.	2 Josué dit alors à tout le peuple: “Voici ce que Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël vous fait dire: Vos pères habitaient au-delà du Fleuve, et ils servaient d’autres dieux: rappelez-vous Térah, père d’Abraham et père de Nahor.
3 I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length andbreadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac.	3 Mais j’ai pris votre père Abraham d’au-delà du Fleuve et je lui ai fait parcourir tout le pays de Canaan, j’ai multiplié sa race et je lui ai donné Isaac.
4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir.Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.	4 À Isaac, j’ai donné Jacob et Ésaü. J’ai donné le mont Séïr à Ésaü pour son domaine; mais Jacob et ses fils, eux, sont descendus en Égypte.
5 I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; final y I broughtyou out.	5 “Puis j’ai envoyé Moïse et Aaron, et ce furent les plaies d’Égypte, tout ce que j’ai fait au milieu d’elle; ensuite je vous ai fait sortir.
6 I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestorswith chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds.	6 Quand j’ai fait sortir vos pères d’Égypte, vous êtes arrivés à la mer et les Égyptiens ont poursuivi vos pères avec leurs chars et leurs cavaliers jusqu’à la Mer des Roseaux.
7 They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made thesea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while,you lived in the desert.	7 Alors ils ont crié vers Yahvé et Yahvé a placé un brouillard entre vous et les Égyptiens, il a ramené la mer sur eux et les a recouverts. Vos yeux ont donc vu ce que j’ai fait en Égypte, après quoi vous avez séjourné de longs jours dans le désert.
8 I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan;they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since Idestroyed them before you.	8 “Alors je vous ai fait entrer dans le pays des Amorites qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain. Ils ont combattu contre vous, et je les ai livrés entre vos mains. Vous avez conquis leur pays et je les ai exterminés devant vous.
9 Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beorto come and curse you.	9 C’est alors que Balak, fils de Sipor, roi de Moab, est parti en guerre contre Israël, et a envoyé chercher Balaam, fils de Béor, pour vous maudire.
10 But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.	10 Mais je n’ai pas voulu écouter Balaam et il a été obligé de vous bénir: ainsi je vous ai donc délivrés de sa main.
11 "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you:Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them al at your mercy.	11 Vous avez ensuite traversé le Jourdain et vous êtes arrivés à Jéricho. Les chefs de Jéricho, les Amorites, les Périsites, les Cananéens, les Hittites, les Guirgachites, les Hivvites et les Jébusites ont combattu contre vous, mais je les ai livrés entre vos mains.
12 I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the workof your sword or of your bow.	12 “J’ai chassé de devant vous les deux rois des Amorites, non par l’épée ou par l’arc, mais par les frelons que j’ai envoyés devant vous.
13 And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, althoughyou live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."	13 Je vous ai donné une terre où vous n’avez pas travaillé, des villes que vous n’avez pas construites mais que vous avez habitées, des vignes et des oliviers que vous n’avez pas plantés, mais dont vous avez mangé les fruits.
14 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestorsserved beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.	14 “Maintenant donc, craignez Yahvé! Servez-le avec sincérité et fidélité. Éliminez les dieux que vos pères ont servis au-delà du Fleuve et en Égypte et servez Yahvé!
15 But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you domean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites inwhose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shal serve Yahweh.'	15 Mais si vous ne voulez pas servir Yahvé, choisissez maintenant qui vous servirez: ou bien les dieux que vos pères ont servi au-delà du Fleuve, ou bien les dieux des Amorites dans le pays desquels vous habitez? Mais moi et ma maison, c’est Yahvé que nous servirons.”
16 The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods!	16 Le peuple répondit: “Loin de nous d’abandonner Yahvé pour servir d’autres dieux,
17 Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place ofslave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way wetravel ed and among all the peoples through whom we passed.	17 car c’est Yahvé notre Dieu qui nous a fait monter avec nos pères du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de l’esclavage. C’est lui qui a accompli sous nos yeux ces prodiges et qui nous a protégés tout au long de la route sur laquelle nous avons marché, chez tous les peuples au milieu desquels nous sommes passés.
18 And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in thecountry. We too shal serve Yahweh, for he is our God.'	18 C’est Yahvé qui a chassé devant nous tous les peuples, de même que les Amorites qui habitaient le pays. Nous voulons donc servir Yahvé, il est notre Dieu.”
19 Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is ajealous God who wil not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins.	19 Alors Josué dit au peuple: “Vous ne saurez pas servir Yahvé, car c’est un Dieu saint, un Dieu jaloux; il ne pardonnera pas vos infidélités et vos péchés.
20 If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spiteof having been good to you in the past, wil destroy you.'	20 Si vous abandonnez Yahvé pour servir des dieux étrangers, lui aussi changera: il vous fera du mal et vous exterminera après vous avoir fait du bien.”
21 The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.'	21 Le peuple dit à Josué: “Non! C’est Yahvé que nous servirons!”
22 Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, toserve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!'	22 Alors Josué dit au peuple: “Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes que c’est Yahvé que vous avez choisi de servir.” Ils lui répondirent: “Nous sommes témoins.”
23 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your al egiance to Yahweh, God ofIsrael!'	23 “Maintenant donc, dit Josué, enlevez les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous et tournez votre cœur vers Yahvé le Dieu d’Israël.”
24 The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shalobey!'	24 Le peuple dit à Josué: “Nous servirons Yahvé notre Dieu et nous écouterons sa voix.”
25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them atShechem.	25 Ce jour-là donc Josué conclut une alliance avec le peuple, il lui imposa un statut et une règle à Sichem.
26 Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it upthere, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary.	26 Il écrivit toutes ces paroles dans le livre de la Loi de Dieu. Il prit une grande pierre et la dressa sous le Chêne qui était dans le sanctuaire de Yahvé.
27 Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard al thewords that Yahweh has spoken to us: it wil be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.'	27 Josué dit alors à tout le peuple: “Cette pierre sera témoin contre nous, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que Yahvé a prononcées devant nous. Elle servira donc de témoin contre vous, pour vous empêcher de renier votre Dieu.”
28 Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage.	28 Ensuite Josué renvoya le peuple, chacun dans son héritage.
29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.	29 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de Yahvé, mourut après cela, âgé de 110 ans.
30 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies inthe highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.	30 On l’ensevelit dans le territoire qu’il avait reçu en partage, à Timnat-Séra, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.
31 Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.	31 Israël servit Yahvé durant toute la vie de Josué et durant toute la vie des anciens qui succédèrent à Josué: ils avaient en effet connu tout ce que Yahvé avait accompli en faveur d’Israël.
32 As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried atShechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamorfather of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph.	32 On ensevelit à Sichem les ossements de Joseph que les Israélites avaient rapportés d’Égypte. On les mit dans la parcelle de champ que Jacob avait achetée aux fils de Hamor, père de Sichem, pour 100 pièces d’argent: elle était devenue l’héritage des fils de Joseph.
33 Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which hadbeen given to him in the highlands of Ephraim.	33 Éléazar, fils d’Aaron mourut à son tour et on l’enterra dans la montagne d’Éphraïm à Guibéa, ville qui avait été donnée à son fils Pinhas.
