Joshua 24

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Joshua gathered al the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned al the elders ofIsrael, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence.	1 Josué réunit toutes les tribus d'Israël à Sichem; puis il convoqua tous les anciens d'Israël, ses chefs,ses juges, ses scribes qui se rangèrent en présence de Dieu.
2 Joshua then said to al the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, yourancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods.	2 Josué dit alors à tout le peuple: "Ainsi parle Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël: Au-delà du Fleuve habitaientjadis vos pères, Térah, père d'Abraham et de Nahor, et ils servaient d'autres dieux.
3 I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length andbreadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac.	3 Alors je pris votre père Abraham d'au-delà du Fleuve et je lui fis parcourir toute la terre de Canaan,je multipliai sa descendance et je lui donnai Isaac.
4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir.Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.	4 A Isaac, je donnai Jacob et Esaü. A Esaü, je donnai en possession la montagne de Séïr. Jacob et sesfils descendirent en Egypte.
5 I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; final y I broughtyou out.	5 J'envoyai ensuite Moïse et Aaron et frappai l'Egypte par les prodiges que j'opérai au milieu d'elle;ensuite je vous en fis sortir.
6 I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestorswith chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds.	6 Je fis donc sortir vos pères de l'Egypte et vous arrivâtes à la mer; les Egyptiens poursuivirent vospères avec des chars et des cavaliers, à la mer des Roseaux.
7 They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made thesea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while,you lived in the desert.	7 Ils crièrent alors vers Yahvé qui étendit un brouillard épais entre vous et les Egyptiens, et fit revenirsur eux la mer qui les recouvrit. Vous avez vu de vos propres yeux ce que j'ai fait en Egypte, puis vous avezséjourné de longs jours dans le désert.
8 I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan;they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since Idestroyed them before you.	8 Je vous fis entrer ensuite dans le pays des Amorites qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain. Ils vous firentla guerre et je les livrai entre vos mains, aussi avez-vous pris possession de leur pays, car je les anéantis devantvous.
9 Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beorto come and curse you.	9 Puis se leva Balaq, fils de Cippor, roi de Moab, pour faire la guerre à Israël, et il envoya chercherBalaam, fils de Béor, pour vous maudire.
10 But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.	10 Mais je ne voulus pas écouter Balaam: il dut même vous bénir et je vous ai sauvé de sa main.
11 "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you:Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them al at your mercy.	11 Vous avez ensuite passé le Jourdain pour atteindre Jéricho, mais les habitants de Jéricho vous firentla guerre, les Amorites, les Perizzites, les Cananéens, les Hittites, les Girgashites, les Hivvites et les Jébuséens,et je les livrai entre vos mains.
12 I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the workof your sword or of your bow.	12 J'envoyai devant vous les frelons qui chassèrent devant vous les deux rois amorites, ce que tu nedois ni à ton épée ni à ton arc.
13 And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, althoughyou live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."	13 Je vous ai donné une terre qui ne vous a demandé aucune fatigue, des villes que vous n'avez pasbâties et dans lesquelles vous vous êtes installés, des vignes et des olivettes que vous n'avez pas plantées et quisont votre nourriture.
14 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestorsserved beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.	14 "Et maintenant, craignez Yahvé et servez-le dans la perfection en toute sincérité; éloignez les dieuxque servirent vos pères au-delà du Fleuve et en Egypte, et servez Yahvé.
15 But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you domean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites inwhose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shal serve Yahweh.'	15 S'il ne vous paraît pas bon de servir Yahvé, choisissez aujourd'hui qui vous voulez servir, soit lesdieux que servaient vos pères au-delà du Fleuve, soit les dieux des Amorites dont vous habitez maintenant lepays. Quant à moi et ma famille, nous servirons Yahvé."
16 The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods!	16 Le peuple répondit: "Loin de nous d'abandonner Yahvé pour servir d'autres dieux!
17 Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place ofslave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way wetravel ed and among all the peoples through whom we passed.	17 Yahvé notre Dieu est celui qui nous a fait monter, nous et nos pères, du pays d'Egypte, de la maisonde servitude, qui devant nos yeux a opéré ces grands signes et nous a gardés tout le long du chemin que nousavons parcouru et parmi toutes les populations à travers lesquelles nous avons passé.
18 And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in thecountry. We too shal serve Yahweh, for he is our God.'	18 Et Yahvé a chassé devant nous toutes les populations ainsi que les Amorites qui habitaient le pays.Nous aussi, nous servirons Yahvé, car c'est lui notre Dieu."
19 Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is ajealous God who wil not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins.	19 Alors Josué dit au peuple: "Vous ne pouvez pas servir Yahvé car il est un Dieu saint, il est un Dieujaloux, qui ne tolérera pas vos transgressions ni vos péchés.
20 If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spiteof having been good to you in the past, wil destroy you.'	20 Si vous abandonnez Yahvé pour servir les dieux de l'étranger, il vous maltraitera à nouveau et vousanéantira après vous avoir fait du bien."
21 The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.'	21 Le peuple répondit à Josué: "Non! C'est Yahvé que nous servirons."
22 Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, toserve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!'	22 Alors Josué dit au peuple: "Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes que vous avez fait choix deYahvé pour le servir." Ils répondirent: "Nous sommes témoins" --
23 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your al egiance to Yahweh, God ofIsrael!'	23 "Alors, écartez les dieux de l'étranger qui sont au milieu de vous et inclinez votre coeur vers Yahvé,Dieu d'Israël."
24 The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shalobey!'	24 Le peuple dit à Josué: "C'est Yahvé notre Dieu que nous servirons, c'est à sa voix que nousobéirons."
25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them atShechem.	25 Ce jour-là, Josué conclut une alliance pour le peuple; il lui fixa un statut et un droit à Sichem.
26 Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it upthere, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary.	26 Josué écrivit ces paroles dans le livre de la Loi de Dieu. Il prit ensuite une grosse pierre et la dressalà, sous le chêne qui est dans le sanctuaire de Yahvé.
27 Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard al thewords that Yahweh has spoken to us: it wil be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.'	27 Josué dit alors à tout le peuple: "Voici, cette pierre sera un témoin contre nous parce qu'elle aentendu toutes les paroles que Yahvé nous a adressées; elle sera un témoin contre vous pour vous empêcher derenier votre Dieu."
28 Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage.	28 Puis Josué renvoya le peuple, chacun dans son héritage.
29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.	29 Après ces événements, Josué, fils de Nûn, serviteur de Yahvé, mourut, âgé de 110 ans.
30 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies inthe highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.	30 On l'ensevelit dans le domaine qu'il avait reçu en héritage, à Timnat-Sérah, qui est situé dans lamontagne d'Ephraïm au nord du mont Gaash.
31 Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.	31 Israël servit Yahvé pendant toute la vie de Josué et toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josuéet qui avaient connu toute l'oeuvre que Yahvé avait accomplie en faveur d'Israël.
32 As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried atShechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamorfather of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph.	32 Quant aux ossements de Joseph que les Israélites avaient apportés d'Egypte, on les ensevelit àSichem, dans la parcelle de champ que Jacob avait achetée aux fils de Hamor, père de Sichem, pour cent piècesd'argent, et qui était devenue héritage des fils de Joseph.
33 Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which hadbeen given to him in the highlands of Ephraim.	33 Puis Eléazar, le fils d'Aaron, mourut et on l'ensevelit à Gibéa, ville de son fils Pinhas, qui lui avaitété donnée dans la montagne d'Ephraïm.
