Joshua 24

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Joshua gathered al the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned al the elders ofIsrael, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence.	1 Josué reunió en Siquem a todas las tribus de Israel, y convocó a los ancianos de Israel, a sus jefes, a sus jueces y a sus escribas, y ellos se presentaron delante del Señor.
2 Joshua then said to al the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, yourancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods.	2 Entonces Josué dijo a todo el pueblo: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Sus antepasados, Téraj, el padre de Abraham y Najor, vivían desde tiempos antiguos al otro lado del Río, y servían a otros dioses.
3 I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length andbreadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac.	3 Pero yo tomé a Abraham, el padre de ustedes, del otro lado del Río, y le hice recorrer todo el país de Canaán. Multipliqué su descendencia, y le di como hijo a Isaac.
4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir.Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.	4 A Isaac lo hice padre de Jacob y de Esaú. A Esaú le di en posesión la montaña de Seir, mientras que Jacob y sus hijos bajaron a Egipto
5 I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; final y I broughtyou out.	5 Luego envié a Moisés y a Aarón, y castigué a Egipto con los prodigios que realicé en medio de ellos. Después los hice salir de Egipto, a ustedes
6 I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestorswith chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds.	6 y a sus padres, y ustedes llegaron al mar. Los egipcios persiguieron a sus padres, con carros y guerreros, hasta el Mar Rojo.
7 They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made thesea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while,you lived in the desert.	7 Pero ellos pidieron auxilio al Señor: él interpuso una densa oscuridad entre ustedes y los egipcios, y envió contra ellos el mar, que los cubrió. Ustedes vieron con sus propios ojos lo que hice en Egipto. Luego permanecieron en el desierto durante largo tiempo,
8 I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan;they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since Idestroyed them before you.	8 y después los introduje en el país de los amorreos, que habitaban al otro lado del Jordán. Cuando ellos les hicieron la guerra, yo los entregué en sus manos, y así pudieron tomar posesión de su país, porque los exterminé delante de ustedes.
9 Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beorto come and curse you.	9 Entonces Balac –hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab– se levantó para combatir contra Israel, y mandó llamar a Balaam, hijo de Beor, para que los maldijera.
10 But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.	10 Pero yo no quise escuchar a Balaam, y él tuvo que bendecirlos. Así los libré de su mano.
11 "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you:Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them al at your mercy.	11 Después ustedes cruzaron el Jordán y llegaron a Jericó. La gente de Jericó les hizo la guerra, y lo mismo hicieron los amorreos, los perizitas, los cananeos, los hititas, los guirgasitas, los jivitas y los jebuseos; pero yo los entregué en sus manos.
12 I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the workof your sword or of your bow.	12 Hice cundir delante de ustedes el pánico, que puso en fuga a toda esa gente y a los dos reyes amorreos. Esto no se o debes ni a tu espada ni a tu arco.
13 And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, althoughyou live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."	13 Así les di una tierra que no cultivaron, y ciudades que no edificaron, donde ahora habitan; y ustedes comen los frutos de viñas y olivares que no plantaron.
14 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestorsserved beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.	14 Por lo tanto, teman al Señor y sírvanlo con integridad y lealtad; dejen de lado a los dioses que sirvieron sus antepasados al otro lado del Río y en Egipto, y sirvan al Señor.
15 But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you domean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites inwhose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shal serve Yahweh.'	15 Y si no están dispuestos a servir al Señor, elijan hoy a quién quieren servir: si a los dioses a quienes sirvieron sus antepasados al otro lado del Río, o a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuyo país ustedes ahora habitan. Yo y mi familia serviremos al Señor».
16 The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods!	16 El pueblo respondió: «Lejos de nosotros abandonar al Señor para servir a otros dioses.
17 Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place ofslave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way wetravel ed and among all the peoples through whom we passed.	17 Porque el Señor, nuestro Dios, es el que nos hizo salir de Egipto, de ese lugar de esclavitud, a nosotros y a nuestros padres, y el que realizó ante nuestros ojos aquellos grandes prodigios. El nos protegió en todo el camino que recorrimos y en todos los pueblos por donde pasamos.
18 And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in thecountry. We too shal serve Yahweh, for he is our God.'	18 Además, el Señor expulsó delante de nosotros a todos esos pueblos y a los amorreos que habitaban en el país. Por eso, también nosotros serviremos al Señor, ya que él es nuestro Dios».
19 Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is ajealous God who wil not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins.	19 Entonces Josué dijo al pueblo: «Ustedes no podrán servir al Señor, porque él es un Dios santo, un Dios celoso, que no soportará ni las rebeldías ni los pecados de ustedes.
20 If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spiteof having been good to you in the past, wil destroy you.'	20 Si abandonan al Señor para servir a dioses extraños, él, a su vez, los maltratará y los aniquilará, después de haberles hecho tanto bien».
21 The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.'	21 Pero el pueblo respondió a Josué: «No; nosotros serviremos al Señor».
22 Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, toserve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!'	22 Josué dijo al pueblo: «Son testigos contra ustedes mismos, de que han elegido al Señor para servirlo». «Somos testigos», respondieron ellos.
23 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your al egiance to Yahweh, God ofIsrael!'	23 «Entonces dejen de lado los dioses extraños que hay en medio de ustedes, e inclinen sus corazones al Señor, el Dios de Israel».
24 The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shalobey!'	24 El pueblo respondió a Josué: «Nosotros serviremos al Señor, nuestro Dios y escucharemos su voz».
25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them atShechem.	25 Aquel día Josué estableció una alianza para el pueblo, y les impuso una legislación y un derecho, en Siquem.
26 Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it upthere, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary.	26 Después puso por escrito estas palabras en el libro de la Ley de Dios. Además tomó una gran piedra y la erigió allí, al pie de la encina que está en el Santuario del Señor.
27 Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard al thewords that Yahweh has spoken to us: it wil be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.'	27 Josué dijo a todo el pueblo: «Miren esta piedra: ella será un testigo contra nosotros, porque ha escuchado todas las palabras que nos ha dirigido el Señor; y será un testigo contra ustedes, para que no renieguen de su Dios».
28 Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage.	28 Finalmente, Josué despidió a todo el pueblo, y cada uno volvió a su herencia.
29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.	29 Después de un tiempo, Josué, hijo de Nun, el servidor del Señor, murió a la edad de ciento diez años.
30 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies inthe highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.	30 Lo enterraron en el territorio que había recibido en herencia, en Timnat Séraj, en la montaña de Efraím, al norte del monte Gaás.
31 Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.	31 Israel sirvió al Señor mientras vivió Josué, y durante toda la vida de los ancianos que le sobrevivieron y que habían experimentado las obras del señor en favor de Israel.
32 As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried atShechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamorfather of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph.	32 Los huesos de José, que los israelitas trasladaron desde Egipto, fueron enterrados en Siquem, en la parcela de campo que Jacob había comprado a los hijos de Jamor, padre de Siquem, por cien monedas de plata, y que había pasado a ser propiedad de los hijos de José.
33 Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which hadbeen given to him in the highlands of Ephraim.	33 También murió Eleazar, hijo de Aarón y lo enterraron en Guibeá, ciudad situada en la montaña de Efraím, que había sido entregada a su hijo Pinjás.
