Galatians 4

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 What I am saying is this: an heir, during the time while he is stil under age, is no different from a slave,even though he is the owner of al the property;	1 Or je dis: aussi longtemps qu'il est un enfant, l'héritier, quoique propriétaire de tous les biens, nediffère en rien d'un esclave.
2 he is under the control of guardians and administrators until the time fixed by his father.	2 Il est sous le régime des tuteurs et des intendants jusqu'à la date fixée par son père.
3 So too with us, as long as we were stil under age, we were enslaved to the elemental principles of thisworld;	3 Nous aussi, durant notre enfance, nous étions asservis aux éléments du monde.
4 but when the completion of the time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of theLaw,	4 Mais quand vint la plénitude du temps, Dieu envoya son Fils, né d'une femme, né sujet de la loi,
5 to redeem the subjects of the Law, so that we could receive adoption as sons.	5 afin de racheter les sujets de la Loi, afin de nous conférer l'adoption filiale.
6 As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, 'Abba, Father';	6 Et la preuve que vous êtes des fils, c'est que Dieu a envoyé dans nos coeurs l'Esprit de son Fils quicrie: Abba, Père!
7 and so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir, by God's own act.	7 Aussi n'es-tu plus esclave mais fils; fils, et donc héritier de par Dieu.
8 But formerly when you did not know God, you were kept in slavery to things which are not really gods atal ,	8 Jadis, dans votre ignorance de Dieu, vous fûtes asservis à des dieux qui au vrai n'en sont pas;
9 whereas now that you have come to recognise God -- or rather, be recognised by God -- how can younow turn back again to those powerless and bankrupt elements whose slaves you now want to be al overagain?	9 mais maintenant que vous avez connu Dieu ou plutôt qu'il vous a connus, comment retourner encoreà ces éléments sans force ni valeur, auxquels à nouveau, comme jadis, vous voulez vous asservir?
10 You are keeping special days, and months, and seasons and years-	10 Observer des jours, des mois, des saisons, des années!
11 I am beginning to be afraid that I may, after al , have wasted my efforts on you.	11 Vous me faites craindre de m'être inutilement fatigué pour vous.
12 I urge you, brothers,-be like me, as I have become like you. You have never been unfair to me;	12 Devenez semblables à moi, puisque je me suis fait semblable à vous, frères, je vous en supplie.Vous ne m'avez nullement offensé.
13 indeed you remember that it was an il ness that first gave me the opportunity to preach the gospel toyou,	13 Mais vous le savez, ce fut une maladie qui me donna l'occasion de vous évangéliser la premièrefois,
14 but though my il ness was a trial to you, you did not show any distaste or revulsion; instead, youwelcomed me as a messenger of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself.	14 et, malgré l'épreuve que vous était ce corps infirme, vous n'avez marqué ni mépris ni dégoût; maisvous m'avez accueilli comme un ange de Dieu, comme le Christ Jésus.
15 What has happened to the utter contentment you had then? For I can testify to you that you wouldhave plucked your eyes out, were that possible, and given them to me.	15 Que sont donc devenues les félicitations que vous vous adressiez? Car je vous rends cetémoignage: s'il avait été possible, vous vous seriez arraché les yeux pour me les donner.
16 Then have I turned into your enemy simply by being truthful with you?	16 Alors, suis-je devenu votre ennemi en vous disant la vérité?
17 Their devotion to you has no praiseworthy motive; they simply want to cut you off from me, so that youmay centre your devotion on them.	17 Leur attachement pour vous n'est pas bon; ils veulent vous séparer de moi, pour vous attacher àeux.
18 Devotion to a praiseworthy cause is praiseworthy at any time, not only when I am there with you.	18 Il est bien de s'attacher les autres pour le bien, pour toujours, et non pas seulement quand je suisprès de vous,
19 My children, I am going through the pain of giving birth to you al over again, until Christ is formed inyou;	19 mes petits enfants, vous que j'enfante à nouveau dans la douleur jusqu'à ce que le Christ soit forméen vous.
20 and how I wish I could be there with you at this moment and find the right way of talking to you: I amquite at a loss with you.	20 Que ne suis-je près de vous en cet instant pour adapter mon langage, car je ne sais comment m'yprendre avec vous.
21 Tell me then, you are so eager to be subject to the Law, have you listened to what the Law says?	21 Dites-moi, vous qui voulez vous soumettre à la Loi, n'entendez-vous pas la Loi?
22 Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave girl and one by the freewoman.	22 Il est écrit en effet qu'Abraham eut deux fils, l'un de la servante, l'autre de la femme libre;
23 The son of the slave girl came to be born in the way of human nature; but the son of the freewomancame to be born through a promise.	23 mais celui de la servante est né selon la chair, celui de la femme libre en vertu de la promesse.
24 There is an al egory here: these women stand for the two covenants. The one given on Mount Sinai --that is Hagar, whose children are born into slavery;	24 Il y a là une allégorie: ces femmes représentent deux alliances; la première se rattache au Sinaï etenfante pour la servitude: c'est Agar
25 now Sinai is a mountain in Arabia and represents Jerusalem in its present state, for she is in slaverytogether with her children.	25 (car le Sinaï est en Arabie) et elle correspond à la Jérusalem actuelle, qui de fait est esclave avecses enfants.
26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and that is the one that is our mother;	26 Mais la Jérusalem d'en haut est libre, et elle est notre mère;
27 as scripture says: Shout for joy, you barren woman who has borne no children! Break into shouts ofjoy, you who were never in labour. For the sons of the forsaken one are more in number than the sons of thewedded wife.	27 car il est écrit: Réjouis-toi, stérile qui n'enfantais pas, éclate en cris de joie, toi qui n'as pas connules douleurs; car nombreux sont les enfants de l'abandonnée, plus que les fils de l'épouse.
28 Now you, brothers, are like Isaac, children of the promise;	28 Or vous, mes frères, à la manière d'Isaac, vous êtes enfants de la promesse.
29 just as at that time, the child born in the way of human nature persecuted the child born through theSpirit, so now.	29 Mais, comme alors l'enfant de la chair persécutait l'enfant de l'esprit, il en est encore ainsimaintenant.
30 But what is it that scripture says? Drive away that slave girl and her son; the slave girl's son is not toshare the inheritance with the son of the freewoman.	30 Eh bien, que dit l'Ecriture: Chasse la servante et son fils, car il ne faut pas que le fils de la servantehérite avec le fils de la femme libre.
31 So, brothers, we are the children not of the slave girl but of the freewoman.	31 Aussi, mes frères, ne sommes-nous pas enfants d'une servante mais de la femme libre.
