1 What I am saying is this: an heir, during the time while he is stil under age, is no different from a slave,even though he is the owner of al the property;	1 Maintenant je dis: tant que le fils du propriétaire est un enfant, on ne le distingue pas des esclaves, bien qu’il soit leur maître à tous.
2 he is under the control of guardians and administrators until the time fixed by his father.	2 Il dépend de tuteurs et d’économes jusqu’à l’âge fixé par son père.
3 So too with us, as long as we were stil under age, we were enslaved to the elemental principles of thisworld;	3 C’était pareil pour nous, car nous étions des mineurs et nous étions soumis aux obligations morales de ce monde.
4 but when the completion of the time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of theLaw,	4 Mais lorsque fut arrivée la plénitude des temps, Dieu envoya son Fils, né d’une femme, né sous la Loi
5 to redeem the subjects of the Law, so that we could receive adoption as sons.	5 afin de racheter ceux qui étaient sous la Loi, pour que nous recevions notre titre d’enfants.
6 As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, 'Abba, Father';	6 Et parce que vous êtes fils, Dieu a fait venir à vos cœurs l’Esprit de son Fils, celui qui peut crier: Abba, Père!
7 and so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir, by God's own act.	7 Donc tu n’es plus esclave, tu es fils, et comme à un fils, Dieu te donne l’héritage.
8 But formerly when you did not know God, you were kept in slavery to things which are not really gods atal ,	8 Autrefois vous ne connaissiez pas Dieu, et vous serviez des dieux qui ne le sont pas.
9 whereas now that you have come to recognise God -- or rather, be recognised by God -- how can younow turn back again to those powerless and bankrupt elements whose slaves you now want to be al overagain?	9 Et puis vous avez connu Dieu, ou plus exactement: Dieu vous a reconnus. Mais alors, pourquoi revenez-vous à des obligations, à des choses pauvres et sans vie? Vous allez donc de nouveau en être esclaves?
10 You are keeping special days, and months, and seasons and years-	10 Et vous allez observer tel et tel jour, et la nouvelle lune et cette période-ci et cette année-là…
11 I am beginning to be afraid that I may, after al , have wasted my efforts on you.	11 Vraiment, je crains d’avoir perdu ma peine avec vous.
12 I urge you, brothers,-be like me, as I have become like you. You have never been unfair to me;	12 Je me suis bien fait l’un de vous, frères; vous aussi, je vous en prie, soyez comme je suis. Vous m’avez toujours bien traité.
13 indeed you remember that it was an il ness that first gave me the opportunity to preach the gospel toyou,	13 Vous savez comment j’étais malade tout au début, quand je vous ai évangélisés.
14 but though my il ness was a trial to you, you did not show any distaste or revulsion; instead, youwelcomed me as a messenger of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself.	14 Mon état de santé était pour vous une épreuve, mais vous ne m’avez pas pour autant méprisé ou montré du dégoût; au contraire vous m’avez reçu comme un ange de Dieu, comme le Christ Jésus.
15 What has happened to the utter contentment you had then? For I can testify to you that you wouldhave plucked your eyes out, were that possible, and given them to me.	15 Mais qu’est devenu ce bonheur parfait? Car, je ne mens pas, vous vous seriez arraché les yeux pour me les donner.
16 Then have I turned into your enemy simply by being truthful with you?	16 Alors suis-je maintenant votre ennemi parce que je vous dis la vérité?
17 Their devotion to you has no praiseworthy motive; they simply want to cut you off from me, so that youmay centre your devotion on them.	17 Là-bas on est plein de zèle pour vous, mais pas dans le bon sens. Ces gens-là veulent vous prendre à part pour que vous soyez pleins de zèle pour eux.
18 Devotion to a praiseworthy cause is praiseworthy at any time, not only when I am there with you.	18 Comme ce serait bon d’être toujours plein de zèle, et dans le bon sens, et pas seulement quand je suis près de vous!
19 My children, I am going through the pain of giving birth to you al over again, until Christ is formed inyou;	19 Oui, mes petits enfants, je souffre pour vous les douleurs d’une mère jusqu’à ce que le Christ ait pris forme en vous.
20 and how I wish I could be there with you at this moment and find the right way of talking to you: I amquite at a loss with you.	20 Combien je voudrais être auprès de vous en ce moment et vous parler de vive voix, car je ne sais comment faire avec vous.
21 Tell me then, you are so eager to be subject to the Law, have you listened to what the Law says?	21 Dites-moi, vous qui voulez vous soumettre à la Loi, l’avez-vous entendue?
22 Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave girl and one by the freewoman.	22 Il est écrit qu’Abraham eut deux fils, l’un né de son esclave, l’autre de celle qui était libre.
23 The son of the slave girl came to be born in the way of human nature; but the son of the freewomancame to be born through a promise.	23 Le premier fils, celui de l’esclave, lui était né par le jeu de la chair; mais celui de la femme libre, il le devait à une promesse de Dieu.
24 There is an al egory here: these women stand for the two covenants. The one given on Mount Sinai --that is Hagar, whose children are born into slavery;	24 Il y a là un symbole: on y reconnaît deux alliances. La première, celle du Mont Sinaï, c’est Agar: elle donne le jour à des esclaves.
25 now Sinai is a mountain in Arabia and represents Jerusalem in its present state, for she is in slaverytogether with her children.	25 Agar était d’Arabie, où est le Sinaï, et représente bien la Jérusalem actuelle qui est esclave avec ses enfants.
26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and that is the one that is our mother;	26 Mais la Jérusalem céleste est libre, et c’est elle notre mère.
27 as scripture says: Shout for joy, you barren woman who has borne no children! Break into shouts ofjoy, you who were never in labour. For the sons of the forsaken one are more in number than the sons of thewedded wife.	27 Il est écrit: Réjouis-toi, femme stérile qui n’as pas eu d’enfants, saute et crie de joie, toi qui n’as pas connu les douleurs de l’enfantement. Car la femme laissée pour compte aura plus d’enfants que celle qui avait un mari.
28 Now you, brothers, are like Isaac, children of the promise;	28 Frères, vous êtes enfants de la promesse, tout comme Isaac.
29 just as at that time, the child born in the way of human nature persecuted the child born through theSpirit, so now.	29 Mais déjà dans ce temps l’enfant de la chair persécutait l’enfant de l’esprit, et c’est pareil aujourd’hui.
30 But what is it that scripture says? Drive away that slave girl and her son; the slave girl's son is not toshare the inheritance with the son of the freewoman.	30 Mais que dit l’Écriture? Renvoie l’esclave et son fils, car le fils de l’esclave ne recevra rien de ce que doit hériter le fils de la femme libre.
31 So, brothers, we are the children not of the slave girl but of the freewoman.	31 Nous sommes nés de femme libre et non pas fils d’esclaves.
