Galatians 2

1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.	1 In seguito, quattordici anni dopo, tornai a Gerusalemme con Barnaba, preso meco anche Tito.
2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.	2 Vi andai mosso da una rivelazione ed esposi loro il Vangelo che io predico tra i Gentili, specialmente a quelli di grande autorità, per non correre o non aver corso invano.
3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;	3 E allora nemmeno Tito, che era con me, ed era Gentile, fu costretto a circoncidersi.
4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-	4 E sebbene dei falsi fratelli intrusi furtivamente si fossero introdotti fra noi per insidiare la nostra libertà che abbiamo in Cristo Gesù, e per ridurci in servitù,
5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .	5 non cedemmo nemmeno per un momento alle esigenze di loro, affinchè la verità del Vangelo rimanesse in mezzo a voi.
6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.	6 Quanto poi a quelli di grande autorità (a quello che sono stati non guardo: Dio non ha riguardi personali), essi, quelli di grande autorità non mi aggiunsero altro,
7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised	7 anzi, avendo visto che a me era stato affidato il Vangelo per i non circoncisi, come a Pietro quello dei circoncisi,
8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),	8 (e colui che ha fatto di Pietro l'apostolo dei circoncisi ha fatto di me l'apostolo delle Genti)
9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.	9 riconosciuta la grazia a me conceduta, Giacomo, Cefa e Giovanni, che sono riputati le colonne, porsero a me e a Barnaba le destre in segno di associazione, perchè andassimo tra i Gentili, mentre essi restavano tra i circoncisi.
10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.	10 Soltanto ci raccomandarono di ricordarci dei poveri, e questo pure mi son dato premura di farlo.
11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.	11 Essendo poi venuto Cefa ad Antiochia, io gli resistei in faccia, perchè egli era degno di biasimo:
12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.	12 infatti, prima che arrivassero certuni provenienti da Giacomo, egli mangiava coi Gentili; ma venuti quelli, si ritirava e stava separato per timore dei circoncisi.
13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.	13 E con lui anche gli altri Giudei ricorsero alla simulazione in modo che ad essa fu indotto anche Barnaba.
14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'	14 Ma avendo io veduto che non procedevano rettamente riguardo alla verità del Vangelo, in presenza di tutti, dissi a Cefa: Se tu che sei Giudeo, vivi da Gentile e non da Giudeo, come mai costringi i Gentili a giudaizzare?
15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners	15 Noi, Giudei per nascita e non Gentili peccatori,
16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.	16 sapendo che l'uomo non è giustificato mediante le opere della legge, ma soltanto per la fede di Gesù Cristo, crediamo anche noi in Cristo Gesù, per esser giustificati dalla fede di Cristo e non dalle opere della legge, perchè nessuno può esser giustificato dalle opere della legge.
17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!	17 Or se cercando noi d'esser giustificati in Cristo, siam trovati anche noi peccatori, sarebbe forse Cristo ministro del peccato? Non può essere.
18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.	18 E se io riedifico ciò che ho distrutto, mi costituirei da me stesso prevaricatore.
19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist	19 Io invece è per la legge che son morto alla legge, per vivere a Dio: io sono stato confitto in croce con Cristo;
20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 non son più io che vivo, ma è Cristo che vive in me, e questa vita che vivo nella carne, la vivo nella fede del Figliolo di Dio, il quale mi ha amato e ha dato se stesso per me.
21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.	21 Non voglio disprezzare la grazia di Dio; ma se la giustizia si ottiene per mezzo della legge, Cristo è dunque morto invano.
