Galatians 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.	1 Ensuite, au bout de quatorze ans, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabé et Tite que je prisavec moi.
2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.	2 J'y montai à la suite d'une révélation; et je leur exposai l'Evangile que je prêche parmi les païens -mais séparément aux notables, de peur de courir ou d'avoir couru pour rien.
3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;	3 Eh bien! de Tite lui-même, mon compagnon qui était grec, on n'exigea pas qu'il se fît circoncire.
4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-	4 Mais à cause des intrus, ces faux frères qui se sont glissés pour espionner la liberté que nous avonsdans le Christ Jésus, afin de nous réduire en servitude,
5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .	5 gens auxquels nous refusâmes de céder, fût-ce un moment, par déférence, afin de sauvegarder pourvous la vérité de l'Evangile...
6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.	6 Et de la part de ceux qu'on tenait pour des notables - peu m'importe ce qu'alors ils pouvaient être;Dieu ne fait point acception des personnes --, à mon Evangile, en tout cas, les notables n'ont rien ajouté.
7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised	7 Au contraire, voyant que l'évangélisation des incirconcis m'était confiée comme à Pierre celle descirconcis --
8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),	8 car Celui qui avait agi en Pierre pour faire de lui un apôtre des circoncis, avait pareillement agi enmoi en faveur des païens --
9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.	9 et reconnaissant la grâce qui m'avait été départie, Jacques, Céphas et Jean, ces notables, cescolonnes, nous tendirent la main, à moi et à Barnabé, en signe de communion: nous irions, nous aux païens, euxà la Circoncision;
10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.	10 nous devions seulement songer aux pauvres, ce que précisément j'ai eu à coeur de faire.
11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.	11 Mais quand Céphas vint à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu'il s'était donné tort.
12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.	12 En effet, avant l'arrivée de certaines gens de l'entourage de Jacques, il prenait ses repas avec lespaïens; mais quand ces gens arrivèrent, on le vit se dérober et se tenir à l'écart, par peur des circoncis.
13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.	13 Et les autres Juifs l'imitèrent dans sa dissimulation, au point d'entraîner Barnabé lui-même àdissimuler avec eux.
14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'	14 Mais quand je vis qu'ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l'Evangile, je dis à Céphasdevant tout le monde: "Si toi qui es Juif, tu vis comme les païens, et non à la juive, comment peux-tu contraindreles païens à judaïser?
15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners	15 "Nous sommes, nous, des Juifs de naissance et non de ces pécheurs de païens;
16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.	16 et cependant, sachant que l'homme n'est pas justifié par la pratique de la loi, mais seulement par lafoi en Jésus Christ, nous avons cru, nous aussi, au Christ Jésus, afin d'obtenir la justification par la foi au Christet non par la pratique de la loi, puisque par la pratique de la loi personne ne sera justifié.
17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!	17 Or si, recherchant notre justification dans le Christ, il s'est trouvé que nous sommes des pécheurscomme les autres, serait-ce que le Christ est au service du péché? Certes non!
18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.	18 Car en relevant ce que j'ai abattu, je me convaincs moi-même de transgression.
19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist	19 En effet, par la Loi je suis mort à la Loi afin de vivre à Dieu: je suis crucifié avec le Christ;
20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 et ce n'est plus moi qui vis, mais le Christ qui vit en moi. Ma vie présente dans la chair, je la visdans la foi au Fils de Dieu qui m'a aimé et s'est livré pour moi.
21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.	21 Je n'annule pas le don de Dieu: car si la justice vient de la loi, c'est donc que le Christ est mort pourrien."
