Galatians 2

1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.	1 Quindi quattordici anni dopo, andai di nuovo a Gerusalemme con Barnaba, preso meco anche Tito.
2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.	2 E vi andai per rivelazione: e conferii con quegli il vangelo, che io predico tra le nazioni, e distintamente con quegli, che erano in grande autorità: affinchè io non corressi, od avessi corso senza frutto.
3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;	3 Ma nemmen Tito, che era meco, essendo gentile, fu astretto a circoncidersi;
4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-	4 Cioè a dire per riguardo di que' falsi fratelli, i quali si erano furtivamente intrusi ad esplorare la nostra libertà, che abbiamo di Cristo Gesù, per ridurci in servitù.
5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .	5 A' quali non cedemmo neppure per un momento con assoggettarci, affinchè rimanesse presso di voi la verità del vangelo:
6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.	6 Ma nissuna differenza vi è da me a quegli, che avevano grande autorità (checché siano eglino stati: Iddio non bada all'esteriore dell'uomo), imperocché nulla a me contribuiron del loro quegli, che avevano grande autorità.
7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised	7 Ma per lo contrario avendo veduto, come a me era stato affidato il vangelo per i non circoncisi, come a Pietro per li circoncisi;
8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),	8 (Imperocché chi diè potere a Pietro per l'apostolato de' circoncisi, lo ha dato anche a me trai gentili.)
9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.	9 E avendo riconosciuto la grazia conceduta a me, Giacomo, e Cefa, Giovanni, che erano riputati le colonne, porsero le destre di confederazione a me, a Barnaba: onde noi trai gentili, ed eglino trai circoncisi:
10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.	10 Solamente che ci ricordassimo de' poveri: la qual cosa eziandio fui sollecito ad eseguire.
11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.	11 Essendo poi venuto Pietro ad Antiochia, gli resistei in faccia, perché meritava riprensione.
12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.	12 Conciossiachè prima che arrivassero alcuni da Giacomo, egli mangiava, co' gentili: venuti poi quegli, si ritirava, e tenevasi a parte per timore di que' circoncisi.
13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.	13 E alla simulazione di lui si accordarono gli altri Giudei, di modo che anche Barnaba fu indotto da loro alla stessa simulazione.
14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'	14 Ma avendo io veduto, come noti andavano con retto piede secondo la, verità del vangelo, dissi a Cefa in presenza di tutti: se tu, che se' Giudeo, vivi da Gentile, e non da Giudeo, come costringi i Gentili a giudaizzare?
15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners	15 Noi per natura Giudei, e non Gentili peccatori,
16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.	16 Sapendo, come non è giustificato l'uomo per le opere della legge, ma per la fede di Gesù Cristo, crediamo anche noi in Gesù Cristo per essere giustificati per la fede di Cristo, e non per le opere della legge: dappoiché nissun uomo sarà, giustificato per lo opere della legge.
17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!	17 Che se cercando noi di esser giustificati in Cristo, siamo trovati anche noi peccatori, è egli forse Cristo ministro del peccato? Mai no.
18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.	18 Imperocché se quello, che distrussi, di bel nuovo l'edifico, mi costituisco prevaricatore.
19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist	19 Ma io per la legge sono morto alla legge per vivere a Dio: con Cristo sono sconfitto in croce.
20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 E vivo non già io, ma vive in me Cristo, e la vita, ond'io vivo adesso nella carne la vivo nella fede del figliuolo di Dio, il quale mi amò, e diede se stesso per me.
21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.	21 Non disprezzo la grazia di Dio. Imperocché se la giustizia è dalla legge, dunque invano Cristo morì.
