Galatians 2

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.	1 Catorze anos mais tarde, subi outra vez a Jerusalém com Barnabé, levando também Tito comigo.
2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.	2 E subi em conseqüência de uma revelação. Expus-lhes o Evangelho que prego entre os pagãos, e isso particularmente aos que eram de maior consideração, a fim de não correr ou de não ter corrido em vão.
3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;	3 Entretanto, nem sequer meu companheiro Tito, embora gentio, foi obrigado a circuncidar-se.
4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-	4 Mas, por causa dos falsos irmãos, intrusos - que furtivamente se introduziram entre nós para espionar a liberdade de que gozávamos em Cristo Jesus, a fim de nos escravizar -,
5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .	5 fomos, por esta vez, condescendentes, para que o Evangelho permanecesse em sua integridade.
6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.	6 Quanto aos que eram de autoridade - o que antes tenham sido não me importa, pois Deus não se deixa levar por consideração de pessoas -, estas autoridades, digo, nada me impuseram.
7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised	7 Ao contrário, viram que a evangelização dos incircuncisos me era confiada, como a dos circuncisos a Pedro
8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),	8 {porque aquele cuja ação fez de Pedro o apóstolo dos circuncisos, fez também de mim o dos pagãos}.
9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.	9 Tiago, Cefas e João, que são considerados as colunas, reconhecendo a graça que me foi dada, deram as mãos a mim e a Barnabé em sinal de pleno acordo:
10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.	10 iríamos aos pagãos, e eles aos circuncidados. Recomendaram-nos apenas que nos lembrássemos dos pobres, o que era precisamente a minha intenção.
11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.	11 Quando, porém, Cefas veio a Antioquia, resisti-lhe francamente, porque era censurável.
12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.	12 Pois, antes de chegarem alguns homens da parte de Tiago, ele comia com os pagãos convertidos. Mas, quando aqueles vieram, retraiu-se e separou-se destes, temendo os circuncidados.
13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.	13 Os demais judeus convertidos seguiram-lhe a atitude equívoca, de maneira que mesmo Barnabé foi levado por eles a essa dissimulação.
14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'	14 Quando vi que o seu procedimento não era segundo a verdade do Evangelho, disse a Cefas, em presença de todos: Se tu, que és judeu, vives como os gentios, e não como os judeus, com que direito obrigas os pagãos convertidos a viver como os judeus?
15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners	15 Nós, judeus de nascença, e não pecadores dentre os pagãos,
16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.	16 sabemos, contudo, que ninguém se justifica pela prática da lei, mas somente pela fé em Jesus Cristo. Também nós cremos em Jesus Cristo, e tiramos assim a nossa justificação da fé em Cristo, e não pela prática da lei. Pois, pela prática da lei, nenhum homem será justificado.
17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!	17 Pois, se nós, que aspiramos à justificação em Cristo, retornamos, todavia, ao pecado, seria porventura Cristo ministro do pecado? Por certo que não!
18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.	18 Se torno a edificar o que destruí, confesso-me transgressor.
19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist	19 Na realidade, pela fé eu morri para a lei, a fim de viver para Deus. Estou pregado à cruz de Cristo.
20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 Eu vivo, mas já não sou eu; é Cristo que vive em mim. A minha vida presente, na carne, eu a vivo na fé no Filho de Deus, que me amou e se entregou por mim.
21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.	21 Não menosprezo a graça de Deus; mas, em verdade, se a justiça se obtém pela lei, Cristo morreu em vão.
